In the beginning there was text. Poker has been played online since late 1990:s. The real poker geeks like math wiz Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson started out on IRC poker. You played for rankings, not money and the client was entirely text based. The first online card room to offer real money poker card games was Planet Poker. The site was launched January 1 1998. It was a big hit, but the software had many problems often resulting in days of downtime. Soon others like Paradise Poker and Party Poker entered the scene and Planet Poker couldn’t keep up.
What really changed the whole online poker industry was Chris Moneymakers World Series of Poker victory 2003. He won a seat in the tournament online paying only $33. The Cinderella story of a guy coming from nowhere winning $2.5 million and the most prestigious poker tournament in the world made created a huge interest for online poker. People with no previous knowledge of the rules of poker started playing online as if there were no tomorrow, and the rest is as we say - history
