If you post (in the comments) a funny or cute picture that contains a cat and a box (plus it is somehow game related), I will give you either a microbadge code or 8 to buy a Cat in a Box microbadge.

Here it is: mb

If you already have a Cat in a Box microbadge, you can buy some other microbadge.

Don't forget to add a funny caption or comment. It can be under the picture or in the picture (like on ICanHasCheezburger.com).

I will also select one of the contestants to get a super tiny surprise package (it will fit in a DVD bubble mailer envelope). It will have both cat and game stuff in it.

Are we there yet?

We have a BGG homage to this inspiring author:

THE BEAR WITH THE HAIR
Written by Eric Herman
As heard on The Dice Tower #245
Performed by Eric Summerer (narrator), Eric Herman (the Bear, Player 5), Geoff Englestein (the Fish)

The sun was not shining, the rain it was pouring
So we sat in the house and that time was so boring
I sat there with Sally, playing board games all day
And I said, "How I wish there were more here to play!

"I'm sick of Lost Cities, Schotten Totten and Hive
I'd rather play games that can hold up to five.
Two player games are a fine exhibition
But Sally's not really the best competition"

And then something went KNOCK. How that KNOCK was a shock!

He came through the door and it gave us a scare
We looked and we saw him, the Bear with the Hair
And he said to us, "You have no need to despair.

"I heard you were looking for more to join in
to your game playing sessions, so let us begin
I've brought along friends who will shortly arrive
They're two friends and I call them... Player 4 and Player 5."

And so they came in and we all played together
And I was no longer so sad for the weather
But halfway along in our game of 7 Wonders
The Bear began cursing for all of his blunders

"I shouldn't have traded that card," the Bear said.
"I should have done something quite different, instead.
"Let's not play this game," and more swear words were hurled
"This game is frakkin' broken! Hey, let's play Small World"

And so we complied, and set up the new game
but from Player 4 such an odor there came
And sadly the rules were not taught very well
because oh, what a smell, what a smell, what a smell

And as we retreated for air in the foyer
Player 5 started to be a rules lawyer
He angrily said, "We were playing all wrong!"
And his words were so sharp and so shrill and so strong

So we gave up on Small World and started another
But Player 4 called his significant other
And we waited an hour till he got off the phone
But by then our game of Bohnanza was blown

The Bear then suggested we play something long
Shadows Over Camelot, what could go wrong?
But he kept on insisting the traitor was me
and we lost by a score of nine black swords to three

And when in the end there was no traitor found
he flipped up the table and the pieces flew 'round
He said, "This is dreadful, I hate co-op games!
I throw them off roofs and I burn them in flames!"

And then with the zeal of a devilish Tasmanian
He forced us to play, "Trading in the Mediterranean"
But all through that game he was locked in paralysis
Unable to suitably solve his analysis

"What is my best move? It just isn't quite clear
What move would your mother make, if she were here?"
And while he was questioning what piece to move
Our fish said, "I must say, I do disapprove."

"These gamers should not be invited to stay
These gamers should not be invited to play
They murder your fun, and they make you all squirm
They're almost as bad as that guy, Ryan Sturm"

Now, I'm not accustomed to hearing my fish
so I felt it crucial to honor his wish
But how to encourage them all to depart?
I thought of a plan that was simple and smart

I suffered through one more annoying game session
Then I signaled to Sally with a knowing expression
While the Bear spilled his food on my games, very sloppily
Sally said we should play Justin Bieber Monopoly

And then, in what seemed like a lightning bolt flash
They ran out the door in a mad, scrambled dash
And before I could muster a moment to speak
The Bear came back in and said, "See you next week!"

My fish said, "Indeed, that was bad, but it's true
That for now you'll be happy to play just with two"
He had a good point, so to Sally I beckoned
We played Twilight Struggle and loved every second

Happy Birthday Dr Seuss! Seven Things You Didn’t Know About The Lorax Author

From radaronline.com

By Debbie Emery - Radar Reporter

Millions of kids and adults alike across America will be rushing out to see The Lorax this weekend, and many others will pick up their favorite old battered Dr. Seuss books in honor of the late author’s birthday.

While most people can endlessly quote quirky lines from The Cat In The Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, or How The Grinch Stole Christmas, they are clueless about the man behind the outlandish genius. RadarOnline.com presents seven things you didn’t know about the beloved scribe.

d10-7 Born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904, where the future bestseller’s German immigrant father worked in a brewery until it was closed during the Prohibition. As an adult, Dr. Seuss made his childhood neighborhood a household name in his first children's book, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street.

d10-6 The literary legend’s pen name was born from an illicit drinking session! Geisel studied at the prestigious Dartmouth College and first tried his hand at journalism in the humor magazine Dartmouth Jack-O Lantern, where he rose to the ranks of Editor-In-Chief, until he got busted for drinking gin with some classmates in his room and was banned from all extracurricular activities. Determined not to give up his creative comical outlet, Ted began writing under the pen name, Seuss, which was both his middle name and his mother’s maiden name.

Trying to fulfill his dad’s dream of him being a college professor, Ted traveled to England to study at Oxford University but quickly grew bored of the pomp and circumstance and opted instead to travel around Europe with pretty fellow student Helen Palmer, who went on to become his first wife. The couple was married in 1927 and Ted returned to the U.S., with a new bride but without a degree from Oxford.

d10-5 After publishing humorous articles for magazines such as Vanity Fair and Life, Geisel’s first career of creating advertising campaigns for Standard Oil, NBC and General Electric lasted 15 years until the onset of World War II shifted his focus to bigger issues and he began contributing weekly political cartoons to liberal publication PM magazine. He then poured all his energies into the war effort and joined the Army in 1943 as a Captain and Commander of the Cartoon Department of the First Motion Picture Unit, where he fell in love with the art of animation, developing a series of training films featuring a character called Private Snafu.

d10-4 A collection of children's sayings called Boners led to his big break in children’s literature with the eventual publication of And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, after it was rejected a whopping 27 times by Vanguard Press. Geisel and Helen moved to La Jolla, California, and he penned If I Ran the Zoo, Horton Hears a Who! and If I Ran the Circus.

Next came the title that would mould the dreams of generations of children to come, when Houghton Mifflin asked Seuss to write and illustrate a book with just 225 "new-reader" vocabulary words and challenged him to "bring back a book children can't put down,” and The Cat In The Hat was born in 1957 to phenomenal success and rave reviews. It was closely followed by How The Grinch Stole Christmas and Green Eggs and Ham, and his latest to make it to the big screen, The Lorax in 1971.

d10-3 Dr. Seuss’ signature style is based on anapestic tetrameter, a poetic meter used by many poets. It consists of four rhythmic units each composed of two weak beats followed by one strong beat, and often the first weak syllable is omitted, or an additional weak syllable is added at the end. A classic example is found in the story, Yertle The Turtle.

"And today the Great Yertle, that Marvelous he
“Is King of the Mud. That is all he can see.”

When it comes to his fabulous illustrations, Dr Seuss’ characters such as the Grinch and the Cat are known for their familiar round and droopy shapes, as are his buildings which melt and bend around free-standing staircases, ramps and platforms.

d10-2 Geisel’s life story wasn’t all about brightly drawn pictures and rhyming verses, it was also marred by tragedy and scandal. After fighting a long battle with cancer and the emotional trauma of her husband’s affair with Audrey Stone Dimond, his wife Helen committed suicide in October 1967, her ‘mourning husband’ married his former mistress six months later. Despite two marriages and a bibliography full of children’s classics, Dr. Seuss never had children of his own, instead living by the motto, "You have 'em; I'll entertain 'em."

After several years of bad health, Seuss died of throat cancer on September 24, 1991 at age 81. He was cremated in La Jolla and Dr. Seuss Enterprises was left in the careful hands of ‘Mrs. Seuss,’ Audrey, including the rights to 44 books that had been translated into 15 different languages and sold more than 200 million copies. During his career, he was honored with two Academy Awards, two Emmys, a Peabody and the Pulitzer Prize.

d10-1 Dr. Seuss’ legacy continues to live on in countless modern-day versions of his work, from eleven TV speicals, the Broadway musicals Seussical and The Grinch, to Hollywood blockbusters, The Cat in the Hat with Mike Myers, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey, and CGI animated works Horton Hears A Who, and opening Friday, The Lorax. Fans who want to jump into Dr. Seuss’ fantasy world feet-first can visit Seuss Landing at the Island Of Adventures theme park in Orlando, Florida.

Well, we finally got to meet Ole, the black and white kitty.

There were some questions about Sven and Ole (or Lena) jokes. Here is an example of one:

Sven and Ole are roofing a house. Ole picks a nail out of the pan, examines it, and with a "nope" tosses it over his shoulder, picks up another one does the same thing, picks up a third and after examining it uses it to nail in the shingle.

Sven (seeing all of this) exclaims, "Ole! what the hell are you doing, wasting nails like that?"

Ole replies, "Well you see, those nails they're pointing towards the house, I can use them. But these nails... they're pointing away from the house, they're useless."

"Ole you IDIOT!!" Sven replies, "those nails aren't something you just throw away willy nilly... those nails are for the other side of the house."

I have been talking to my boyfriend about making this cartoon for almost a year. Here it is:

I decided to name the cats after central characters in jokes from the Upper Midwest region of the U.S.

Lena is the tiger cat. Sven is a white cat. We have not met Ole yet, but I think I will make him a tuxedo cat. Of course, I will not know exactly when he looks like until he flows out of my pen.

I am hand-drawing these for now. I need to learn more about Photoshop.

Please let me know what you think of this cartoon. Please be gentle. Also, I would love to hear any future cartoon ideas you might have.

Thank you,

Cate
