• Kanji Battle Released - July 19
Kanji Battle is an iOS implementation of the board game of the same name published by Edge Entertainment. In this educational game, you take the role of a Japanese mage, battle others that long for the power the Kirin confer to their lords, and use spells binding the power the kanji (Japanese characters) give to the cards. You combine Kanji to make "spectacular attacks" and obtain Kirin cards to give you the victory. It's a game for learning Japanese. This release is only in the Spanish App Store. It is priced at 1,59 € and appears to be Universal.

• Ascension Lite Explanation - July 22
George at Incinerator Studios got in touch with iOS Board Games to let us know that Ascension Lite was indeed intentionally pulled from the App Store. The reason was because some "issues" with it were discovered. Incinerator is concentrating on the next steps for Ascension and will return to Ascension Lite in the future.

• RoboArena Development Update - July 23
I gotta hand it to Stephen and the guys of Bravado Waffle. They really know how to draw out a lead up to a release. Stephen posted a new development update about their upcoming release of RoboArena. They are hard at work developing the game and are close to having a beta version ready for their private testers. Developing and training of the intelligent AI is also happening. They report that the UI has been updated significantly, including something called a "prediction cam" that lets you see briefly into the future. It appears to be fairly innovative kind of mechanic for a strategy game. A September/October public release is planned.

You can catch all of the latest for RoboArena at Bravado Waffle's blog.

• Puerto Rico Submitted - July 23
Everybody probably knows by now that Codito Tweeted their submission of Puerto Rico for the iPad to the App Store over the past weekend. We have since learned from some of Ravensburger's helpers that a release date of August 4th is expected if Apple can get them through in a timely manner. Details on price have not yet been released, but confidence about the app abounds by all who seem to be involved with it. We've also heard tell a rumor that Puerto Rico designer Andreas Seyfarth himself will be involved in some of the promotion-related activities for the app.

You can expect to be hearing more about this app and its release here just prior to the projected August 4th release.

• Hunters: Episode One Update - July 25
People have asked why we mention Hunters: Episode One by Rodeo Games. We thought it was obvious that the top-down, turn-based, action-point-driven tactical game play shares a basic genre similarity to games like Space Hulk and X-Com. So we let you know about it. Here's more:
Rodeo Games wrote:
What's new

Fixes the Field Medic talent.
Fixes broken Game Center Leaderboards.
Fixes AI walking in odd diagonal patterns.
Fixes a crash when Hunters with the Martyrdom talent are killed.

• Cabals: The Card Game Announced - July 25
Small, indepedent Finnish game studio, Kyy Games, announced on TouchArcade.com that their upcoming game, Cabals: The Card Game will be released in late Summer 2011, which to me translates to "no later than September 22nd", but we'll see.

Cabals: The Card Game is an upcoming online trading card game (TCG) that will opt for a freemium business model and so will be free to download and play. It will be available for iOS, Android devices and browsers. Here's more from the developer:

Kyy Games wrote:
In Cabals: The Card Game the goal is to win either by storming the opponent's Stronghold or by dominating the game board.
Each player is armed with a unique deck of cards which they have constructed, filled with units and actions and represented by a hero.

Cabals: The Card Game re-invents the genre with a gameboard that brings a whole new tactical dimension into the game. Optional ways to win, four Cabals with their own distinct playing styles, and different board layouts make sure that no two matches play alike.

Kyy is expecting the app to be in Beta next week and hopes to "release sooner rather than later." Sooner? As in the early part of Summer rather than later? Hmm. There's only a week until the dead middle of Summer. Just sayin.

You can find out a whole bunch more about this upcoming app at http://www.cabalsgame.com

• Tikal Update Submitted to App Store - July 25
Codito posted early in the week about a long overdue update of its Tikal app to version 1.1 that was just submitted to the App Store. There's quite a bit that's new:

Codito wrote:
Fixes:
- Eliminated memory leaks that were causing crashes
- Online moves are sent individually rather than batched for online games (to avoid network issues causing games to hang or get out of synch)
- Eliminated unintentional touch after pinch zooming

Updates:
- Added confirmation messages for moving explorers
- Restore each player's last zoom level
- Selected leader or worker "pulses" for easier identification
- Added support for "table games" for iPad (select which side human players are sitting on; UI rotates to face players)
- Adjusted iPhone player display when fully zoomed out so entire board can be viewed
- Allowed extra scrolling space on iPad so tiles can be placed more easily
- Created default game setup for fresh installations
- Allowed game music to be restored after selecting iPod music from Options
- Added GameCenter direct launch buttons for leaderboards and achievements
- Added "Undo" and "Restart" for online games (these have also been clarified in the menu to "Undo Action" and "Undo Turn")
- Added "Next Game" button for online games

• Ghost Stories The Boardgame Released - July 26
After months of speculation, chance sightings and general mysteriousness, Repos Production finally released their iPad version of Antoine Bauza's cooperative game, Ghost Stories. The app is available now and priced at $5.99. It plays 1-2 players (though its expected to eventually support 4) and like the print version, is proving really challenging to beat!

http://itunes.apple.com/app/ghost-stories-the-boardgame/id45...

• Reiner Knizia's Battleline Updated - July 27
Rational Brothers LLC has updated Reiner Knizia's Battleline to version 2.0. It's a big update in a small announcement. The biggest improvement by far is that the app now has online multiplayer, both realtime and asynchronous. Here's what's new:

Quote:
What's new

Online multiplayer - both synchronous and a-synchronous.
19 Game Center achievements.
Pass and Play tabletop experience improved.
Flag claim on tied troop formations fixed.
Many other fixes, improvements, and refinements.

Any word on what the "issues" are with Ascension Lite? I have it, and the only issues I have found is that the ai gets a little slow at times. Maybe the "issue" is that people weren't buying the app, just using the free version.

Perhaps a reasonable suspicion in a vacuum, but if it were true, this presumably wouldn't be:

I´m quiet sure that´s the point.. I also have the light version installed and see no point in buying the full version just for the multiplayer option.

I've got two games that are showing as saved but I don't dare go near them cause the program gets stuck loading them.

Ghost Stories looks very nice, if somewhat initimidating.
Anyone know what the number in the bottom left corner represents? it seems to oscillate between 60 and 59 on my iPad. Is it a debug artefact left in?

Frame rate possibly. Should be removed before a commercial release imho. Other than that, the lack of a tutorial makes me (complete newbie) hesitant to buy that app. 2 player is pass-and-play? Solo mode is KI supported or what? I'm afraid the learning curve here is too steep, if you're not accustomed to the real thing. I, for my part, hate to watch instructional videos for a boardgame...

Stinks that Ghost Stories is only 2 players. What's up with the player limitation? Surely the ipad can handle all that additional thinking.

The learning curve is steep, but manageable. Play a few games through solo and lose horribly, and then you start to lose slightly less horribly!

Concerning the ghost stories App.

Playing solo is the easyest config to play GS and two, the hardest. The learning curve is no so hard to my mind... You just have to focus on the good choices of the tile you'll use. Always remember to get a lot of tao token at the beginning of the game and to get some buddha. Don't forget, if you play solo to use all the time the others boards powers... You can get it back very very quickly... Using a lot of tao token is the best way to win... I think that I never go to a fight if I need more than 1 good color on a dice. I hate to loose or win with a too big luck coeficiant.

I'm beta testing the app since 3 or 4 month and I have around 100 games on the count... I enjoy it as the best app I have on my Pad. It's fast, challenging and the replay value is very very good.

I hope you'll enjoy it

I get that problem too (in the non-lite version) it gets stuck at 100%. But if I just leave it alone for a while (maybe two minutes) it eventually finishes loading. It's certainly annoying.

It seems to be related to the slow advanced AI bug, as I only get those loading pauses on games already affected by the slow AI. I also have only gotten slow AI games when the AI is set at the 2nd level. No wonder the 3rd level AI isn't enabled. shake

The number on the bottom left is the frame rate generated by the graphics engine, cocos2d. I am 90% sure this was unintentionally left in, as it is turned on by default in cocos2d.

I had the same freezing issue with Ascension, but like Alex suggested, I let it sit for a couple minutes and it loaded.

I also suspect the Lite version was pulled because it was a little too good. They should've cut down the functionality, maybe limited the number of points, pulled some key cards, etc. so those of us who don't care much about multiplayer would have incentive to buy (beyond supporting the designers/developers of a great app, of course).

Yeah, I thought it was frame rates too. And the learning curve is like YOWZA.....hard. I am playing on the easiest difficulty and have played the board game many, many times but I have only beaten the app 1 time so far and that was by sheer luck of the draw and dice.
I see NO reason to up the difficulty off the lowest setting at this point and I think a tutorial would really, really benefit the game.

I do like it though, just needs some tweaks.

I took a look at Cabal's website: is that art going to fly by Apple's draconian censors? The stuff's great artwork, but the nudity's definitely not for younger players (at least by ratings standards). I'm not mentioning this to spark a censorship debate, I'm just concerned Apple will block the game or force the company to water down the art, which would be a shame.

If you let them sit for a few minutes, they eventually load, at least my stuck ones did.

I agree with some of the supposed reasons for ascension being pulled. It is a fantastic app and my most played game. If i had an iPad, I would definitely buy it.

Yeah, my feeling of the Ghost Stories app (which I've just purchased) is that it is very much of a beta product quality, and needs more work to justify the $6.

Just off the top of my head, things like:

The frame rate counter being visible.
No background music ( background music goes a long way to making a product "feel" finished ).
The cheesy moaning/gurgling ghost sound effects.

I've had this same problem. Locked game files that won't clear - and jam up the program if you try to reopen the game file.

I believe the problem with Ascension Lite is that whenever you are not connected to the internet with it you don't see the ads pop up in between players. I have not seen a single ad when I have my wifi turned off.

I completely disagree. Ghost stories is a fantastic game and the implementation is really well done. The game plays extremely well solo as-is and currently, for me, represents the best value in terms of replay value in iOS games today. The items you mention are obviously things that need fixing, but they are very minor. Anybody who loves playing ghost stories solo should buy this app, period.

Please note that as much as I love boardgames, and boardgames on iOS, I find that most boardgames don't stand up well to repeated back to back plays. The experience of social interaction and human opposition naturally slows down the game and adds a layer that needs to be there for long term interest. Solo games have the advantage here... The iOS implementation has the potential to be the exact same game but without the hassle of setup, etc. Ghost stories is so challenging and varied that it excels in this format.

Easily worth 6$.

Hey, thanks for the RoboArena shout out! Sorry to be dragging out the lead, but are working as fast as possible I promise. It feels sometimes like we are in Game Dev Story: One moment it's: "You're on fire!" And the next it's: "Oh no! Flooding has made you loose a day of work!"

The prediction cam is amazing, and the single player Arena Mode should be working by this weekend I hope. I'll update the blog with videos and screen shots once it's done!

At the same time, we've been developing an actual print board game to go along with RoboArena. We've updated it with professional illustrations and a lot of new exciting features as well. If anybody is interested in beta testing it, drop me a PM and I'll send you the link for the PnP version!

edit: I just posted a new post detailing the evolution of our game so far. It was fun to look back over the past 10 months of development! Take a look: http://www.bravadowaffle.com/2011/07/evolution-of-roboarena-...

No background music ( background music goes a long way to making a product "feel" finished ).
The cheesy moaning/gurgling ghost sound effects

Eh, I feel that it's a solid implementation, with a few bugs.

As for background music/sound effects, I couldn't care less about them. I usually prefer to listen to my own soundtrack.

The framerate counter has absolutely no effect on gameplay (though it is an amateurish error to make), so it's not really a problem per se.

Yes it does--up to three other computer opponents. The AI is decent, but I find I win far more often than not.

Puerto Rico was submitted on July 22, so I don't understand why Aug. 4 would be a problem. It doesn't take 13 days for Apple to approve an app during non-peak times. I'd guess they've chosen Aug. 4 as their date.

Frankly, I'm finding Ravensburger (and, by extension, Codito) to be a bit cagey about this whole thing. For instance, here's a basic question: what will the price be on Puerto Rico? They've been asked this question directly over at TA, multiple times, with no response. It's not a difficult question; the lack of response is puzzling, to say the least.

I just re-read the app description over at TA, and the amazing thing is that it doesn't really say anything. There's a complete lack of details. The general tone seems to be, "Hey, we're excited, so you should be excited, too! And PR used to be the No. 1 game at BGG, so everyone knows it's awesome, right? Just buy it; you'll love it!"

Personally, I'm not sure that's enough to overcome my skepticism, especially if the price is as high as I suspect it's going to be. Ravensburger was involved with the PC version of PR, which was a miserable dog of a game, and Codito's standing has taken some hits with the troubled release of Tikal and the multiplayer disaster in Ra.

So, yeah, I'm skeptical. Maybe it's just me ... although I know it's not, given some other concerns I've seen here and at TA. Normally, this would be a no-brainer first-day download for me (like Ghost Stories was, to use just one example), but I'll be waiting at least a week and carefully reading the early reports.

This sums my thoughts exactly. PR is my favorite game, but I must admit that my eagerness is falling.

Whatever the criticism at the end of the day it's great to have Ghost Stories on the iPad! I personally am more than happy with my purchase (a steal at $6!) though I do agree that it could use a bit more polish here and there, especially in regard to the sound design and, to a lesser extent, some of the graphics.

OTOH I find the interface/interaction design very well done!

I hope GS sells well enough to legitimate adding the expansions as in-app purchases.

Or limited it to x # of plays before requiring purchase, or only had non-Retina graphics/non-full Ipad scren support.

I´m quiet sure that´s the point.. I also have the light version installed and see no point in buying the full version just for the multiplayer option.
I was initially upset that I bought the game first, THEN discovered the LITE version in all it's glory. However, overall, I do like the features I'm getting, even though the LITE version does seem to be too good...

--Up to 4p games
Zero sum games with just 2p can get stale, so it's nice to throw in random elements that you get from having a 3rd and 4th player.
--no ads
As I mention below, they were coming up sporadically, so they weren't really a bother. It's just one screen, tap away from, and that's it. It's not some ad banner like with many other freeware apps.
--Online multiplayer
Honestly, this was my least preferred feature. I play online sparingly, but I wouldn't quit it cold turkey, as playing vs. real people is the true test of how your skill is.
--Expansion potential
Return Of The Fallen ex, the Rat King promo, and whatever other promos they can implement (e.g. Vedah) will be available as IAP (in app purchases), but AFAIK, you won't be able to buy them through the LITE version. I want the expansions/promos, so if they do go through, this would make buying the full version of Ascension very much so worth it.

An Iphone user was saying he sees ads all the time. I forgot to ask him to be specific though. I get the same thing... whether on wifi or not, I see the ad to buy the full game after I forfeit or complete a game. NOT after each turn.

Ok everyone ... lets call a spade a spade here ... at last count, before the lite version was pulled, it had more then three times as many ratings as the full version, (and all positive) The lite version of Ascensions was pulled because too many people were getting it instead of buying the full version. This is something I just dont understand??
There has really been no negative remarks about Ascensions among the people that play it either on the iphone or the ipad, lite or full version: Why not support the people who made it and buy it!!
I hear people saying how they love the game but the lite version keeps locking up now or they have no use for online play ... OK ... but if you like the game bust out some cash and buy it!! If it costs too much then you cant afford a smart phone or an ipad anyway sell it and pick yourself up a PSP!!!
I for one love this game and think its a steal for what you pay for it!!
The fact that people expect designers to spend time working out bugs on a lite version of a game when the full version plays flawless doesnt make any sense to me ... the lite version served its purpose ... it showed everyone what a good game it was ... now its time to pony up some dough!! ... isnt the idea behind all that hard work game designers go through to make money? can you blame them for pulling the free version ?? It served its purpose ... If you had the lite version and you liked the game .. buy the full version .. I assure you that you will not be dissapointed!!

I want more board games on the ipad, so I for one will be supporting any and all games that come my way.
Lite versions are great to showcase the gameplay, and make sure its not buggy, there have been a few duds out there, but thats what reviews are for (and this forum) but once I decide if i like a game or not I never hesitate .... Ghost stories here i come.
just my two cents!!

I'd be just fine if Ascension Lite was pulled forever. People need to support this developer with actual money; if that happens, we all have a better chance of seeing the expansion and promo cards being released in the future.

I played both the full and LITE version of Ascension and never found any major bugs with either. Most that happens is the AI takes much longer to think out turns than usual.... on BOTH versions. Am I the only one getting this sort of behavior?

Don't get me wrong, I still believe you should strongly consider buying the game if the LITE version worked for you.

Yes, I have crazy problems too. It seems to have "merged" two games somehow. It only shows a certain opponent, no matter which game I open. We have workers on volcanoes and opponents taking treasure from temple hexes.

Zero problems whatsoever. Tikal functioning perfectly. Suggest you both uninstall, reinstall, shut down and restart device. Yes, the fix could be that simple.

Thanks for the suggestion. I always restart after installing/updating a big app, but it wouldn't hurt to try it again.
