iOS News: Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer Updated, Adds Return of the Fallen Expansion

• Playdek Updates Ascension, Adds Return of the Fallen Expansion - December 8
In less than 24 hours Playdek took their servers down, brought them back up and updated their flagship app, Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer, to a mere incremental version 1.1. In most people's mind's this qualifies as a major update, one that's been highly anticipated and one that's probably not going to disappoint. Here's the good stuff:

Quote:
What's New in Version 1.1

New Online Game Features:
• Player Profiles
• Player Clocks
• Rematch Invitations

Ascension: Return of the Fallen

Ascension: Return of the Fallen is the first in-app expansion for the popular deck building iOS game Ascension: Chronicle of the Godlsayer and introduces new game mechanics.

Ascension: Return of the Fallen can be played as either a stand-alone game (2 player) or played as an expansion for Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer.
Ascension: Return of the Fallen is quick to learn and easy to play.

Game play revolves around a Center Deck containing Heroes, Constructs and Monsters; and players take turns recruiting Heroes or Constructs for their decks or defeating Monsters to earn honor and ultimate victory. New cards are revealed every turn, forcing players to react and ensuring that each game is dynamic and unique.

Samael the Fallen God has returned in his true form, and is intent on obliterating your world. Will you be able to overcome monstrous obstacles and assemble a mighty army to end Samael’s reign once and for all?

Highlights of Return of the Fallen
• Available for In-App Purchase
• New Fate Mechanic
• New Faction cards

Upon updating, a user unfamiliar with the Ascension: Return of the Fallen expansion, can preview its cards in the Card Gallery feature of the app before buying it. For $2.99, you can add the 35 different card types to your base Ascension app's 53 different card types.

The version 1.1 update also includes a game clock which works like a chess clock, giving the user a bank of time from 10 minutes to 7 days in which to complete an online game. This bank of time only runs during a player's turn and not while its his opponent's turn.

A new profile feature now shows your overall record including in progress games, completed games, win-loss records for 2P, 3P, and 4P, and forfeits. You get a forfeit when your game clock expires. It does not appear that you can view other player's profiles. Feel free to share your own here!

There is also now a Rematch feature which allows a player to easily invite his last opponent to a rematch with all of the same settings.

I leave you now with some action screenshots from the glorious addition of the new expansion.

What a great update. Everything about the game looks sharper and brighter, too.

Being able to see your opponents rating would be great. Best at Game Center.
Also I do not like that there is no indefinite clock setting. I play with people who do not mind if games go on for weeks.

I really don't get the multiplayer implementation. Why isn't there awesome Game Center functionality with leader boards, etc.?
Would make it so much better.

I wonder if they eliminated that feature for a database reason? I'm a programmer, myself, and think that the main reason they did this is because when you halt a game or pause it or play asynchronously then you have to have a database store that information about what was played, what was not played, and the player data on top of that.

So, that being said. It can tie up server bandwidth for all that information, and they wanted a way to free up some of that bandwidth.

Anyway...it's still one of the best apps out there and continues to impress myself and the masses.

Going to grab the new update and the expansion app sometime on Friday for my iPAD 2 and iPHONE 4S.

I do not think it should be that much of an effort. The game already has GameCenter inclusion (albeit not for leaderboards or achievements) so the basic integration is already available, so is the data needed for a leaderboard.

I just updated to RotF on my iPod and I'm encountering a few glitches.

Some text is appearing to stream down the screen, like paint oozing down a wall. The touch screen seems to be reduced to just three or four areas.

I can touch any card in my hand, the very middle of the center row, and each corner. Nothing else will respond to a touch. Makes it very cumbersome to purchase a card or fight the cultist. Impossible to drag cards from anywhere except my hand to the in play zone.

Hopefully there will be a quick update to fix it.

I play ascension on iPad and also on iPhone. Can I purchase ROTF once and use on both devices (same apple ID) or do I have to purchase twice - once for each device?

Once per Apple ID used. Go through the motions on the second device, but you will not be charged.

Will a maximum 7 day timer to complete an online game be sufficient for those that compete internationally, and across wide time zones?

It'll be fun to try the fate cards out with 4 players in a game!

Hi Simon,

Are you running on an iPod Touch 2G? We're getting a number of reports of issues running on the older devices.

If you're experiencing problems running on a 2G device, send an email to 'contact@playdekgames.com' describing the issues. It's our top priority to figure out what's going wrong and to get an update out as quickly as possible.

We've made some progress on the hard AI, but it wasn't ready in time for this release. We decided to focus on the new online features for RotF. The next major update should at least have an improved medium AI, and possibly some additional offline improvements.

This update made the processing speed of the medium AI about 10 times faster. This reduces the stuttering you'll see at the start of an AI turn on occassion. It doesn't necessarily make the AI make a decision faster in some cases, but it will consider many more options and possibly make a "smarter" decision when it hits those situations.

We had about 20,000 abandoned games lingering in our database. The timer is a means to address this. Every game now has a maximum lifespan to help us combat this issue. We'll be adding a '14 day' timer with the next update. Hopefully a month is enough time for everyone to finish a 2 player game.

We chose to use a chess clock system over a timer per turn solution because we have plans to eventually include some form of organized play (tournaments or leagues). So we want to be able to have a fixed length for each round of play, and allow the game timer to enforce this requirement.

Also, it's probably worth pointing out that created games are on a 7 day timer. You'll need to get player slots filled and press "Start" within 7 days or the game will be deleted.

That all makes perfect sense. Thank you for setting this out. The 14 day timer I think really addresses my question about vastly different time zones while enabling you to clear out abandoned games .

I'm grateful for this expansion because it made me an honest man.

I have played a zillion games against the computer on my iPhone, but with the Lite/free version, which made for a bit of nagging guilt. Now I have an expansion to a great game and the developers get a bit of concrete support.

May your good work continue, Playdek.

Great update, guys. Thanks for everything.

Honestly, especially with this new update, Ascension is one of my top picks for GotY in video games... and that includes the ton of Xbox games I have played. Ascension on iOS and Dark Souls are my main two picks.

Fantastic job.

My stats:
In progress: 5
Completed: 298
2P: 131-124
3P: 12-23
4P: 2-6

We had about 20,000 abandoned games lingering in our database. The timer is a means to address this. Every game now has a maximum lifespan to help us combat this issue. We'll be adding a '14 day' timer with the next update. Hopefully a month is enough time for everyone to finish a 2 player game.

We chose to use a chess clock system over a timer per turn solution because we have plans to eventually include some form of organized play (tournaments or leagues). So we want to be able to have a fixed length for each round of play, and allow the game timer to enforce this requirement.

my one gripe:

Can created games start off at the 7 day setting by default?..or even 3?

Unless both players are online and active, 30 minutes is near unachievable with you counting the downtime from when your opponent took their turn. I did not understand this and had to immediately forfeit my game with someone, citing I could not complete the game.

Correct me if I am wrong but I have to suspect that most folks would be playing games that are more like a 1 day - 1 week async. Making the default 30min causes a lot of clicking during game creation.

I should note to others that have not updated that they should finish their games first: my open games were wiped during the update..and I was in the midst of 4. : (

All that said....INCREDIBLY EXCITED. Ascension is one of best looking games on the app store, new enhancements look cool, and I love the way it was designed for the ios! many thanks for the hard work that went into this app.

We're going to add a memory of the last options selected for timer and card sets. There are a lot of people who just want 10 minutes games, so this will everyone default to their preference. One of the advantages of the timer is that hopefully it will address the "real time" player vs "asynchronous" player issue.

lengthtoavoid wrote:

Waiting to install it won't help. All games in progress were deleted from the server during the update. We put a good amount of effort in to making sure that older games would carry over, but by the time we realized what had happened, it was too late to fix it. We decided that the amount of time required for a full database restore wasn't justified. Sorry for the inconvenience, and we'll do our best to avoid this on future updates.

Thanks to all of you for your support. We're looking to address a couple of critical issues (iPod Touch 2G in particular), so we should have a small patch coming very soon. And stay tuned for more good stuff to come (I'm honestly surprised there's no one complaining that Storm of Souls isn't available yet... ;-) )

It'd be nice if the cards in RotF that let you affect the Void would let you do it at any time in your turn rather than immediately forcing you to do it right then and there. In the future I will just make sure I know I'm ready to buy a construct or kill a monster, but the first time I used the card (the new 7 pt Void Hero, for instance) I didn't realize that unless I played my heavy militia and other cards first I'd have a lot less power to put to the task. It also means that 'play all' players need to remember not to play all when those cards are in their hand.

Gary wrote:

There's an issue? Ascension handles the shift between realtime and asynch so smoothly I don't think I've ever noticed any issue at all.

I think the key emphasis in Gary's statement is on the player and the possibly different expectations two players might bring, i.e. one seeking realtime and the other seeking async.

Forgive my ipad newbidity, but how are apps updated on ipad 2 iOS (this is the first Apple product I've ever owned). Do they update automatically or do you have to go into the store to manually update them 1 at a time? My android phone gives me a list of updates I can perform in push notifications.

My Ticket to Ride has had a little red number 1 hovering above it for a while now, which I'm assuming is an update, but I don't see how to update it, though I have not tried going to the Ticket to Ride page in the store yet. I'm assuming Ascension will have the same red number 1 above it when I get home tonight to my wi-fi network.

No, that TtR badge is just a news item, telling you that the new Asia maps are soon to be on sale.

Easy way to check for iOS updates:

The red number (called a "badge") will appear over the AppStore app. It will show how many apps you have to update. Launch it, and select the "Updates" tab at the bottom, and you should see Ascension in the update list. You'll need to be on a WiFi connection to download it.

Exactly. We've had a lot of reports from people who want realtime getting paired with people who want an async game, and it usually results in a forfeit and a negative experience for everyone. The timers will help players to find the game speed that is appropriate for them.

107 currently.

I'd guess it used to be that 48 people showed up in the "create game" menu. It's six spaces per screen, right? And I think it went to eight screens. So I think I had somewhere between 43 and 48 GC friends who also owned Ascension.

Thanks for looking into it.

Edit: my GC is ItsTheDukester. Not sure if that will help. Also, I'd be happy to email my device ID if that would help

It is 8 per invite page. That didn't change with the update. So somewhere between 57 and 64.

I know your GC ID. I was masquerading as you when you went on hiatus to try to get a look at the stuck games issue. ;-)

One thing I would like to see implemented is instant-resume for the app. You know how, since iOS 4.0, you can exit an app and then can launch it later and instantly be back right where you left off? That is something the Ascension app should have so that if you have exited your game because no one is playing in anything approaching real-time only to be notified 20 seconds late that it is now your turn, you won't have to wait through the app load-up time again and again. Don't know if you have to reconnect to GameCenter each time even on instant-resume, but just not having to wait for app load each time would be appreciated.

Is there any chance that the promo cards might come to the app? I only ask because some of them look really interesting. It's not a need, but a want.

I am really liking the game with the expansion. I still suck though, so I don't play multiplayer. I need to work on actual strategy with the game. blush

Anyone know if I have to pay the $2.99 twice to install the expansion on 2 different Ipads, even if I'm using the same itunes account? Usually that's not that case with apps but it doesn't seem like the second ipad knows I've already paid for the game on ipad #1.

It should install for free once you select the purchase option again. Something about already owning, etc. etc.

It should install for free once you select the purchase option again. Something about already owning, etc. etc.

Well, the install is not the issue. The game installs for free as usual. It's only once in-game when I go to upgrade it to RotF does it ask me to pay $2.99 again.

As long as you are using the same Apple ID, you can download it on the second Ipad for free. I did the same thing last night and was only charged once.

I think I found a bug with the Sordid Asp card. I had 4 VP, my opponent had 5, and I defeated the Asp. Afterward I ended up with 7 VP rather than 5.

Rocket Courier X-99 seems to have stopped working. Mechana constructs always went straight to my discard pile, instead of going into play.

The timer is an improvement, I must say, having been on the end of a number of abandoned games. But it seems that 10 minutes isn't enough for some people.

You have the choice of where to drag it now. It's a change, but the right one. (No, app, actually I DON'T want that watchmaker's alter in play the turn I played my second burrower . . . )

Great update for the app!! Now I will not be doing much else at work for a week . . .

So when is Storm of Souls going to be out?

Having not had the opportunity to try out the expansion in its original format, I must say that RotF really enhances the Ascension base set. I had begun to be a little bored due to the relatively small card set but the additional cards and the new fate mechanic bring a whole new dimension to the experience. Had my first online game and was completely trounced but I was incredibly impressed to see the 10-11 card hands that my opponent was mustering due to intelligent deck management.

Notwithstanding RotF itself, its implementation to iOS, especially the new multiplayer features, is first class. Another success for Playdek. Can't wait to see what they do with their other upcoming properties, Summoner Wars and Nightfall. Either way, they will be first day purchases for me.

I assume that she has created a Game Center account, and your accounts are friends. After that, she needs to log in to the Ascension server before you will see her in your invite list.

Yup! Has to go online in game at least once to show up in your game.

@incinerator, if you don't mind me asking.....
On the splash screen, Gary Games and Playdek logos appear, but NOT Incenerator Studio. Was there any reason for the omission?

.

BTW, +1 request here for the promos, although if Storm Of Souls needs to take precedence, then to that I'll also say, keep up the good work!

.

@anyone....

Anyone find it odd that cards like Arbiter Of Fate says "all other players may draw a card", but instead of being prompted to draw a card, you're automatically given a card anyways? I'm guessing this is just to speed the game along? I could imagine a case where someone would rather not do so to still have a discard pile to banish cards from for example.

I have played a zillion games against the computer on my iPhone, but with the Lite/free version, which made for a bit of nagging guilt. Now I have an expansion to a great game and the developers get a bit of concrete support.

May your good work continue, Playdek.

Yeah, I gotta be frank and say the entire Ascension iOS team did the right thing by pulling the lite version from the AppStore. Dunno if some of those folks would've bought the full version just to get to the exp (which is to say they wouldn't have bothered with either)

To be fair, I had never heard of Ascension when it was released, and was pretty skeptical. I downloaded the Lite version, my husband and I went through the tutorial and played a few games, and probably 5 minutes laters we were buying the full game. Granted, there are a lot of freeloaders out there, but trial versions can also be a really good way to sell your product, especially if itʻs priced higher (and in the app store economy, $5 is "higher" priced).

Yeah, that's kinda like the rocket courier before, I think. Great Omen Raven, too. Extreme corner case . . . but still!

Incinerator and Playdek are essentially the same company. Incinerator started in 2005 as an internal studio for THQ making console games (Wii, PS3, 360). THQ allowed us to become an independent studio in 2009 as a cost cutting maneuver. We still have some console development going on now. Playdek was created to separate mobile products from our console work. We hadn't announced Playdek at the time of the initial Ascension launch, but we wanted to include the logo so that the association would be there once we were ready to launch Playdek. And as much as we like the Incinerator logo, it just isn't necessary for it to be there anymore.

ackmondual wrote:

Working on both, along with quite a few other games. Next year's going to be a very busy year for us. (BTW, we're hiring programmers and artists!)

This was a judgement call on our part, similar to Rocket Courier in the original release. We'll likely change it to work "correctly" somewhere along the way. And we'll get the Raven to show everyone which card you picked and which card you drew. Some of our other titles have forced us to implement more advanced UI features, and we'll start see some of those improvements folded back into Ascension going forward.

We haven't decided if the Lite version is coming back or not. It has recently been brought to my attention that the Lite version ran on the iPhone 3G (because it didn't require Game Center), so we may explore options for bringing it back in some form.

Is anyone having trouble with the "Project Alpha" Mechana Construct. It appears that it won't consider the runes (money) I have played out on display. Instead of giving me a discount.....it only allows me to buy with what it gave specifically......Am I using this card incorrectly? It in essence only allows me to buy cheap cards rather than also allowing discounts on more expensive ones and letting me kick in the difference with the rest of my runes.

"Once per turn, you may acquire a Hero or Construct with rune cost less than or equal to the number of Mechana Constructs you control."

So you're acquiring a Hero or Construct without paying any rune cost for it, as long as its printed cost meets the restriction.

Note that Project Alpha does not benefit from Battery Monk or Reactor Monk, since those reduce the number of runes paid to acquire the card. However, acquiring a card with Project Alpha (or with any other means of acquiring without paying the cost) will end the reduced cost effect.

Since I first skimmed through Project Alpha's text, I initially thought it just gave you runes = to # of Mechana constructs. I never thought about any possible interaction between that and Battery Monk + other cards that reduce the cost of Constructs.

Really enjoying the expansion thus far. This is such a beautifully done app. I do think the medium AI is a bit worse with the new cards, but I still enjoy trouncing it repeatedly.

I have a question (and possibly a feature request if it can't be answered): is there any way to see what the turn order is in the round? If I watch one round and see when the round number changes, then I obviously know, but sometimes I forget to do that. I could count turns from the turn log, but I'm hoping there's a faster way to see (so I know whether it's time for Tablet of Time's Dawn).

The player who goes last in every round has a white halo around their avatar. From there, you can work backwards to the first player of every round.

My mother-in-law is giving me her old iPod Touch 2G for Christmas, since I'm always slow to adopt new technology. Ascension was going to be my first app purchase ever, but hearing it doesn't work yet for iPod Touch 2G is giving me pause. Since Gary said they were working on that, I think I'll just wait until they fix it and release a patch or something. Hope it works out!

Done.

The player who goes last in every round has a white halo around their avatar. From there, you can work backwards to the first player of every round.
That's more elegant than what I was doing....

when you tap on the "log" button for each player, you get to see what his last 3 turns were. The last 3 turns are numbered (e.g. round 15), as well as the current one. You can use all that info to figure it out as well (e.g. using the diagram below, if it's round 14, while p2 and p3 just took their round 14 turn, while the last turn p1 tooke was round 13, then he'll go last)

p1 p2 p3

you

Gary, quick rules question.

In a recent game I was able to use the Reclaimax, a Battery Monk, a well-culled hand and a Tablet of Morning's Dawn to take my last turn in the game and extend it out by literally two dozen turns.

My opponent had used the Tablet as his last turn bid for extra points. I then used the Reclaimax to pull it out of the Void, used it, cycled through my entire deck, played the Reclaimax, used it to pull the Tablet out of the Void, used it, cycled through my deck, played the Reclaimax, used it to pull the Tablet out of the void, etc etc etc.

I only ended up stopping when I did because I figured winning by 300 was quite enough. I could have easily gone on indefinitely.

Working as intended?

Edit: Nevermind. I see Justin said that it's an officially allowed move.

Lame.

Why do you think it's lame?

It's pretty hard to assemble.

I could see it being an issue if your opponent had to pay you a dollar for every point you beat them by, but there are plenty of fortunate circumstances that come up in ascension that can hand you the win at the last second, or even earlier!

I think it's fun to have things like that there, since it can give me something to work towards! I may have been overly excited to almost pull this off against my gf the other night . . .

I just updated today after updating Saturday. The update says I don't have the expansion, though I purchased it for $2.99. When I touch the screen to buy it (on faith it won't charge me again) it doesn't respond and doesn't allow me to reupgrade to the new cards? Anyone else having this trouble. I have it on an Iphone 4.

Unfortunately, this update breaks the in-app purchase for Return of the Fallen. If you already have RotF working, you can install the update over the previous version, and it will work just fine. If you delete the app and try to reinstall from this version, you won't be able to gain access to RotF. If you haven't yet purchased RotF, you won't be able to buy it from this version. We've already submitted an update to Apple, and we're at their mercy if they decide to turn this update around quickly.

The previous version is still fully compatible with our network servers, so if you don't have an iPod Touch 2G, and don't care about being able to create online games with a 14 day timer, it's probably best if you hold off on downloading this update until after the replacement is available.

v1.1.2 is now available through the AppStore. This update corrects the IAP issue with RotF. Thanks for your patience.

I understand the need for a time limit, but I find it strange the the time limit is for the entire game, rather than per move. With the 2 week setting I doubt it will matter, but time between moves seems more intuitive.

that may be more impractical.... if you do something less than 1 move per 24 hour period, some people may have "busy days" or something. Also, I'd imagine you'd want to still have the total time anyways, as if someone's utilizing the full 1 decision point per say... 2 days, then it can drag out longer than the max 14 day total time.
