We have changed the release schedule to be every Thursday instead of every Friday.

This week (from today until next Thursday, that is) we focus on testing Frontpage, account, geekmod, image upload, editor. Remember that what you do on the beta site is done also to the live site, so upload images, change your account etc. like you would on the normal site. If you want to test anything without using your own account, use the test account (information was in your invitation email).

An issue that was noted as known in the previous updates but many have reported on is that hotness images are not correctly scaled. Rescaling for the new image formats is not activated yet.

We have a new post editor! It is a popup window that can be minimized and then brought up again, you can scroll the page, quote multiple posts etc. Please test! Is the way it works intuitive? Is it easy to understand what forces it to disappear? Are the confirmation messages appearing for the right reasons?

The parts we focus on for the week are working, there are no major changes planned to them, and we ask for your help in checking that they work as they should. If you find errors or improvements that could be made, please report them so we can make the site better. Major reworking and new features must however wait until after the new UI is released. Reports on other things than the focus area are great too, but there might be work done on them already that is not in the release of the beta that you are testing.

Thanks for your help!

Some of the issues that were fixed during the last week. Please check, especially if you reported it

Changing Domains
If you want to change domains you click on the images on the footer of the page, the URL won’t change but until you do something to change again you should still be on the new domain.

New Global Forums
Although there are three “domains” to the geek, in the end it is only one big site, instead of a simple network of sites. In face of that there has been a change to the organization of the forums. The old GeekDo News got some new friends, and they are now visible on the Forum list under “Global Forums”. The new forums are:
- How to Geek;
- Geek Bugs;
- Geek Suggestions;
- Complaints Department;
- RSP;
- Spam;
- Testing;

When we launch (but not before as this change would affect the live site as well) threads that are now on the equivalent domain forums (for Geek Bugs it would BGG Bugs, RPGG Bugs, etc) will be moved to the Global Forum. Also, a new forum, again only on launch, will be added to each domain called “Domain Discussion”. This forum will be a catch-all type to encompass domain specific bugs, suggestions and how-tos. These will become rarer as time pass, so it should be easy to manage only one. The Off-Topic forums (Arcade, Chit Chat and Tavern) will be kept separated and will be moved from the Everything Else header to the DOMAIN Related header. We have not decided on the Creative Fodder yet.

Empty pages
Some pages, especially things that are sorted by Hot might appear empty the first time you check. If you recheck it after about 5 mins it should show correctly. This is because you might hit a cache that is not created yet. And after the first hit it is created.

Other know issues
Geeklists are getting reworked. The functionality is there, it works, but it will be changed in layout.

The customization has changed completely. You can click on customization on the bottom of the navigation panel and change what block of information to show, and edit the details of each one.

Checking your geekmail or a subscription might not correctly mark it as read, so there might be a difference between the beta and the live site.

Image caches have not been regenerated. This means that for example the hotness images look very odd.

The laurel image on the ranks is a placeholder.

If you change the page or filter on the hotness and hit the back button it opens the hotness on the center bucket.

The “Next Unread Item” might hit an error page. That is because some of the subscription types have not been converted yet, so if you hit one of those it won’t work.

The social web bucket is not there.

The recent activity is not styled yet.

Most of your old quickbar links should be converted, although there is a bug where the pages are shifted 1 to the right (so your first page is now page 2).

The site loads slow from time to time.

Pseudo-unrelated: Is there any chance the two side-by-side column layout is going to make it through into the revised layout? So far everything looks really nice, but I'm on a super-widescreen [it seems most people are on widescreens these days, too] and the site seems unnecessarily "long" with everything having to be in a single column. There's an awful lot of wasted space in the side margins.

I'm sure it's fine on the iPad, but yeah, on a widescreen I am looking for the way to turn it off.

Yes, and for other skins.

The single column layout is the one we will have.

In which case, focusing on space-efficient display options for the custom view items is really, really important. Right now they are less efficient than the old design, which is multiplied by the single-column layout.

That is going to really annoy a whole lot of people. I would strongly urge you guys to rethink this...

If indeed the space is for advertising, what about for people who *pay* to not have advertising *waves* Hi. There is a ton of wasted space, and it is scroll city. I hate it. You should at least have options for people to adjust, particularly if they are paying to not have advertising.

This has been my big gripe too. With almost every monitor being widescreen now moving to a narrow, scroll fest layout seems very counter intuitive. Having two-thirds of my screen being eaten by advertising seems excessive.

To be fair, I like almost everything else so far. I think it looks very clean, I just hate the single column scrolling on the front page. So good job on a bulk of the ui, but I really think the single column deal needs some serious reconsideration. If that is the look you are going for, fine, but allow people to customize it.

A similar example that immediately sprang to mind upon seeing the new ui is the "My Yahoo" ui.

Edit: I also miss Ernie on the front page soblue

This may be echoing what others are saying, but when customizing the frontpage, is there a way to make the modules to be smaller like in the default mode? I like the size that the Announcements, BGG News, etc. is, but I'd love to change what modules went where (I have no interest in having so many images right at the top of the page...).

I'm glad to see I am not the only one scratching his head on the single column. I like that my announcements and my news are the top 2 modules on my current page.

I have yet to REALLY spend a lot of time on the new site - but so far I dislike it a bit and can see how it will become a scroll fest very quickly. Don't get me wrong - overall it is really a clean looking site and we will all certainly get used to it - but not the single WIDE column on the main page... that is what will get so many complaints.

Otherwise I look forward to playing with the site more!

Right now on Beta I need to PageDown 8 times to see 10 posts in each of 11 different buckets. That's 110.

Right now on BGG I need to PageDown 4 times to see 10 + 10 + 40 + 40 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 20 + 5 + 3 posts of 17 different buckets. That's twice as much on half the page.

That's quite a difference. There is no way I can acces BGG easy with just one column and a whole lot of white on the side.

My first opinion after seeing the beta for the first time today was "way too much white space". Seeing the comments here, I'd have to agree with comments here...single column = I don't want the new setup (at least on first impression).

I'm going to play around with it some, but its hard to accept having 1/2 my widescreen monitor be "white space" on both sides of the text...this isn't 1999 where sites have to code for 1024x768 monitors.

I'm also not pleased with the font display in Chrome at my default zoom level...the font is fuzzy. After zooming it, the font cleans up quite a bit (and of course, alot of the white space goes away...). I'll report it it a bit.

Another vote for doing away with the single column. This is horrible.

And seconding the request to allow modules to be 1/3 width like they are in the default layout instead of full width. There is no point in allowing people to customize the layout if full width is the only option.

Finally the text on the front page is noticeably smaller and perhaps a less vibrant shade of blue. The combination makes it incredibly hard for me to read. Please either increase the text size slightly (to match the old size) or else allow the text to be changed on an individual basis.

...when you list something as "working" above, does that mean you believe all functionality of that feature is as it is intended to be for a roll-out?

(I seriously hope not).

I'm seeing significant feature loss on my profile page...not way to see list of games in the want to play/want in trade/want to buy/etc buckets that are (at least IMHO) required features.

edit - I figured this out, but my first question remains

Is there a better place to discuss such items?

edit - found your answer to this in a prior comments section...so I'm prepping my initial impression post as a reply to this thread as you requested earlier.

Ditto. I have 2500 px of screen estate (in width). But this may be not really common (yet). But Steam says 1920 x 1080 is most common.

A Steam survey will be skewed, since the audience is gamers who are more likely to have high-spec monitors.

The prevalence of netbooks, iPads etc means that lower resolutions will still be fairly common and also need to be catered for. I definitely agree that the current single-column layout is extremely inefficient though, so customisation should cater for widescreen.

It's not hard to see exactly where the problem lies in the current "compact" view - every item takes up 2 lines of space, but the second line adds very little value. Having said that, the default front-page two-column "buckets" are less than ideal as well, as I find there is too much relevant information dropped (e.g. the forum/geeklist/blog/etc title) in order to squeeze it into the narrower view.

1 - I like the header.
2 - I like the 2nd collection picture option (the one with the very small tiles). This is a great option for people like me with many hundreds of games.

Don't Like/Concerns:

1 - initial font from chrome (at least for me) is too small. this leads to #2
2 - too much white space on sides. This is amplified by #1, which makes it look *really* bad on initial impression (at least in my opinion)
3 - I'm going to echo a comment made on a prior update thread...the game collection pages are really dis-jointed. All the pretty blue "blocks" make scanning my collection far more difficult than it ought to be...its messing with my eyes.
4 - there is alot of missing info from the collections pages of old...and I can't sort by all the columns
5 - most of the collection data isn't in columns, so its difficult to see groupings/breakpoints easily. I highly suggest a hybrid option that's more tabular and the new one that's designed to be more "pretty"
6 - I'm not sold on the site's new graphic for "boardgamegeek.com". It might grow on me though...we'll see.
7 - the alignment to center is annoying to me compared to the old alignment. I'm used to the site starting 2 inches from the left side of my monitor...now its probably 3 or 3.5. This ties up to 1 & 2.
8 - I like the forums...except the white space additions. This is where I notice the space the most...the PBEM forums take a lot longer to deal with when I'm getting 1/2 as many posts/page as I do on the current system....much, much more scrolling.
9 - i prefer the tabbed in approach to responses to geeklist items...quite a bit more...but I like the rest of the geeklist changes.
10 - probably my biggest issue...I can't quick-edit my collection from the collection page. This is a non-starter for me...if this feature isn't implemented, I'll stay on the old site as long as its available to use. Its painful to update 10-12 games every convention I have in my "want to play" to "own" or "want to buy" while commenting and rating if I have to go to every game's page. This one is a big deal to me, and probably to alot of other people. The new beta collections page only allows a rating change...the loss of functionality here is too much.
11 - the graphic on the overall games ranking (the little green branch) looks bad to me. It doesn't line up with the rating properly, noticeably once you get to double digits. It only gets worse from there...100s look bad...don't even look at 1000+. This needs to be changed.
12 - There aren't enough page bubbles on multi-forum/thread/list/etc ...I'd like to be able to move forward more than one page at a time. This isn't an option on the current site either, but if I'm on page 3, its nice to see 4,5, and 6 there. Where is my ability to jump to a specific page of my choice? (its there in the main site)
13 - The browse games screen has some flaky behavior down at the end of each entry...i'd classify them as bugs and I'll try to enter them in once I get the bug system working.
14 - why is the browse games section only showing the top 10?!?! The current one shows the top 100. Now its going to take me 10 clicks to see all the top 100? That's 10x the number of clicks today.

At this point, I'm apprehensive of the new layout and hopeful for its future, as the old one needs an update, but not at the expense of losing a tremendous amount of functionality.

When a feature has passed a focused test week(like for example image upload is tested this week), been reported on, been bugfixed, and been checked again with no major complaints, then we consider it ready for roll-out.

Even at the new design's fixed width of 1000px (which, to be fair, is somewhat standardish) two columns shows so much more than 1 column.

This is especially an issue when scrolling. Because the new design uses the left nav for the subdomains, that space is lost as you page down. The current design uses about the same amount of space for subdomains, but because it's horizontal across the top it doesn't "waste" space as the page grows long.

With the current BGG design I can get a great snapshot of the site activity that I'm interested in with about 2.5 screens on my not-particularly-large 13" laptop. This includes BGG announcements, news, geeklists, blogs, Forums and Forums+.

Minimal scrolling, zero clicking.

The same amount of info with the new design that would be 8–10 screens worth.

Hey guys,

We have heard your concerns and are thinking about how to best deal with this situation. Very early on the design, which we have been showing on previews here, we decided on a fixed 1000px layout for the geek. Since that simplifies a lot of things for us and allow for a consistent experience. We did think that the current improved customization would be a plus, specially with the compact options for buckets, but looks like there is more to be done there. As I said, we are looking into it.

Yes, please upload images, check that it worked fine on both the beta and the current site.

I mean: images are working well for me. However, I do not see a link to upload files such as rulebooks, excel sheets, etc.

Also, I'm receiving a 404 error when attempting to attach additional screenshots:

Note: the spaces in the filenames is not the issue as I've tried others that were simply "screenshot.jpg" and they failed with same error.

We currently have a bug with BugDigger and Jira, the automatic screenshots can be uploaded but not additional ones. Sorry for this, but there is no way to attach additional images right now.

I am sure there are plenty of other services but I use Jing: http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html?gclid=CIr5tfPAiq4CFbAEQAo...

for sending screen caps to a server and I can then send links - low overhead on receiving end (just a link instead of a full graphic) - I've used it for years and it is great. Highly recommended.

Good to hear. I hate giving negative feedback on something that obviously took time and care to create, but I just want the best BGG we can have.

I've messed with the new site for about 30 minutes, but I can't figure out how to customize the front page. I see people discussing it, so have I just missed how to do it?

I did just see that I could hide that huge, annoying footer. You may want to make the "Hide Footer" button a little more conspicuous, so first time users will immediately understand they can hide it. Perhaps a big X in the upper right, just like the Wikipedia-esque fundraising banners.

Yeah, the default font is way too tiny, smaller than it normally is on BGG now. The beta is the only web page I browse where I'm going to have to find some workaround to up the font size.

It would definitely be nice if it was restored to normal.

Customization options are found in the bottom of the left-side menu, "Customize". That can be done for many types of pages, independently of each other.

You guys are doing a really great job! Upon seeing the new design I also had a "Eek, change!" reaction, but now i use Beta for everything (except the things that don't work so well yet). Sure, there's many tweaks left to make (and you'll be hearing from me and everyone else about them), but I think overall the redesign looks good. Keep at it, guys!

Sorry to belabor this a bit but IMO the "Hotness" does not add a lot of value for the space it takes up. My preference for the front page is to be able to see topics in the buckets I like. I would much rather have that ability rather than a very prominent display of the hotness (which to some degree is redundant based on what is going on in the buckets). I would much rather be able to slide the hotness over to the left side similar to where it is now, and be able to have my buckets closer to how it looks now but with the cleaner look of the new ui.

I might just be a little blind but isn't there an option to go through the subscriptions with just one click from the front page like there is now with the "Next" icon? I think this is a useful tool that should not be retired.

Other than that, I have only very recently started using the beta and have quite a few problems adapting. My biggest issue at this point is that I use a 13 inch screen almost all of the time and it seems to me that the old design was more friendly to smaller screens. Enough complaints, time to work with and get used to the new design! Looking forward to the journey.

Thanks for the beta invite, and I really like the new layout overall. Looks clean and inviting, and less cluttered than the current layout.

Nevertheless, my first impressions mirror those of others - generally, the new front page and the new layout in general are much more wasteful with space. In particular, all the collection- or list-type screens have a lot of whitespace both above and below the items - and information is often crunched into multiple lines, thus making the lists less scannable.

Something else: In several lists on the frontpage (Forums, Reviews, eBay) lack context. Particularly the reviews, they would really benefit from having the game name displayed next to them. There's the hover context info thingy, but that's not always visible.

I think there's a fundamental problem at work here. You try to clean up the layout, while at the same time you have a huge wealth of information that people actually want to (and are used to) see at a glance. There are quite a few places where you can compress the information further without cluttering up the layout, particularly those lists (of forum items or GeekLists in particular), I guess looking into these for reducing scrolling requirements might make sense.

There are some lists (I mostly think about the collection and game browsing ones here) that have even more lines per item where previously there was a tabular layout. The new lists look good, the collection in particular, but they are much less useful than the old ones once a collection grows beyond a certain size. Maybe you could, in addition to the now existing "list", "small icons" and "large icons" views, add another one that looks "tabular" of sorts?

Something else again, about the layout in general. Maybe you can have the left and right borders of the one-column layout more flexible? JavaScript (which you more or less require anyway) could have a look at the window width and then adapt the width of the central column if advertisement estate is a concern - more possibilities than with CSS alone that way. The current redesigned layout really looks odd as soon as the window has more than 1200 pixels in width. You do have Google Analytics in your current-page source code - how many of your users use wider windows than that?

Enough wall of text from me, thanks again for all your awesome work on the new layout!

Something I just noticed. In beta I have 79 subscriptions. In "normal" 99. Somehow 20 are missing? And when opening one of the subscriptions it opens the right page, but does not go to the newest new item, it stays on the top of the page.

The new design is pretty good but the tiny screen width really really really sucks. Really. A lot. Please make it widescreen like our computer monitors.

Also, when you add in the Play by Forum module it only adds in the PbF lobby forum, not the actual PbF games. It looks like there is no way to get the PbF Game module on your front page.

You can hide the hotness (same as on the old site) through your account settings. Please post suggestions like moving this through bugdigger.

The existence of the next link depends on what type of page you are on. File a report if this is problematic. If the new site causes problems for you due to how it behaves on your screen, please report on it. There is no guarantee we can make it better, but if we know about it the chance is higher we can fix it

Please report these things so we can handle them.

Thanks all for testing!

Will do I guess you keep the bug records and feature request lists to yourselves and mark duplicates yourselves as well? I'd hate to report things you've heard dozens of times and only cause undue work...

Things many might report on that are know we list in the known issues. Duplicates are not a problem, they are quick to sort and help both with measuring how big of a problem it is and to see several aspects of the problem. Our hope is that it should be as easy as possible to help with the beta testing

I didn't know Jira before, but it's a great system! Very userfriendly on the tester side of things! The fact that it's so easy is definitely motivating to report more bugs. If you're browsing around and haven't installed it yet - do so! It makes reporting bugs a 1-minute job!

Holy wah! This is an expensive place to put random crap! And further, please DO NOT FIX GeekQuestions tipping** OR thumb counts. Both are a critical part of its charm (such as it is). ** Except for Purplewurple who totally deserves it!

You can hide the hotness (same as on the old site) through your account settings. Please post suggestions like moving this through bugdigger.

I think I already did - is there a place we can go to review open tickets?

I am pretty sure I at least put in that unchecking the hotness in account settings does not work - maybe I didn't suggest moving it.

Thanks!!

No, you cannot see open tickets. I am working through the reports, but there are many and will take time for them to be implemented so please be patient. Yes, that option currently only affects the old site, not the new.

Is there a way to keep track of our reports because I am starting to forget and might start sending duplicates

(Besides the things that don't work yet or need tweaking etc my overall impression after three days is that it might look better but information is even harder to find than old RPGG)

No. I hope you remember what you reported for at least a week Please think of ways that we can improve how to find information! Preferably small changes, reported one at a time. There are many major new structures and reorganizations that we would like to do but that will have to wait until after release.

I started a list in a word document to keep track of what I've submitted.

Since I don't want to use Jira for non-bugs, I'll just mention here that the subscription view is a big improvement. I particularly like that users I've subscribed to appear in a contrasted color - I often miss those posts in the normal layout because I skim over them too quickly.

That's a good question. I have been using Jira for non-bugs (and for bugs too of course). Is that the appropriate way to express suggestions or criticisms or praise for beta things? Can we share them HERE, to allow for discussion?

Very early on the design, which we have been showing on previews here, we decided on a fixed 1000px layout for the geek. Since that simplifies a lot of things for us and allow for a consistent experience.

As others have said, this is really unpleasant. I may like or dislike many other aspects of the new look, but this one is the only thing I have seen so far that would make me want to use the site less.

I'm on a (high-end) netbook, and the content is about 6.5" wide, wasting 3". Wasting almost a third of my tiny screen is really annoying. I hope you come up with a solution.

Create reports for what needs to be changed or improved. We want to focus testing on one or a couple of things per week, so that parts that are ready to test are tested. This increases the helpfulness of the reports by a lot.

Anything that we should take action on should be in a report. For technical help it is best to ask me. General comments and discussions can go here, but this should not turn into super-long threads that all testers need to read before reporting things. Our aim is to make it easy to participate in the beta.

There is a plan for what shall be in the redesign before release. Big new pieces of functionality will most probably not be added. There is a big list of great ideas on The BGG Suggestions Index, for discussions on new things to add that might be a good place.

I created a report, but let me ask here too in case somebody can point out something obvious I'm missing.

How do I record a play in beta?
