This is a great game that's tough to categorize. Is it a simple RTS? Squad-based combat game? Whatever it is, it's engaging and fun. Single player gets stale quickly, but this really shines with 2 (or 4) players.
Very good platformer. Upsides are 2 player simultaneous co-op, level design that's challenging without feeling cheap, and an abundance of secrets for those who like to explore. The controls are a bit touchier than most games (which is just an adjustment, though can occasionally cause frustration when coupled with instant respawns), and there is a single unintuitive section (tip: the charge attack with the cowboy suit is very different from the regular one), but those are minor quibbles overall. It actually reminded me of a more linear Mega Man - perhaps unsurprising, coming from Capcom.
This is no Street Fighter (and, to be fair, I don't think it was trying to be), but it's also very slow compared to MK2 (the high point in the series, in my opinion). The fatality thing in retrospect is kind of like watching old episodes of South Park, when Cartman saying "screw you guys, I'm going home" was the punchline rather than just how he talks. The array of choices in later games, shark jumping or not, still are more entertaining. Plus, you can't play as Shang Tsung.
The best in the series, in my opinion. The balance just seemed best here; they improved on the original, but we didn't yet have the army of cyborgs or anything goofy like happened in the sequels. This is the closest the series came to matching some of the better Street Fighter releases, in my opinion.
This was hands-down my favorite game as a kid. This game actually got me interested in basketball, a hobby that lasted for 7 years (a long time for a kid, especially a kid like me). The only reason it gets an 8 now is that T.E. was so much better.
Improves on the original in every way. Subs/injuries are a good idea, power ups are fun, and the unlockables are worth trying for. While the original is one of the best sports games around, I'm going to say this is one of the best games ever made, unqualified.
