Board games that are also computer games. Computer games that are also board games. Which board/card games would make good computer games?

If you want to play games via the web, then here's a few sites that I reckon are good

Thoth Engine http://digilander.libero.it/zak965/thoth/
and of course there's BSW http://www.brettspielwelt.de
CCGworkshop http://www.ccgworkshop.com/

(please send me a message if you have a favourite site that you want me to add)

I know players like that... You get close to winning, and suddenly they have an asthsma attack, or geta call that their grandmother has contracted leprosy, or their Siamese cat caught fire. Breaks my heart. This happens to me a lot when I am playing Advanced Candyland.

Actually, there are a number of direct implementations of Monopoly as computer games - including one that I used to have on my old 386 which could be fooled by changing the clock speed. I'd turn off the old turbo feature on the computer, start the game, restart turbo and the game would play at 2.5 times normal speed. It meant I didn't have to waste time waiting for the game to roll the dice or move the little tokens around space by space.

The latest electronic incarnation for the consoles (Monopoly Party) is actually the best way to play Monopoly by far (if you must). They correctly implemented the auction rules and modified the main game rules to allow simultaneous turns without actually changing the game. A solid 4 player game can be played in less than 35 minutes this way because all downtime is eliminated.

Fie on thee, Aleister, for reminding me of this monumentally bad game! The Sim City Card Game, or as I like to call it "Satan in a Box", was not the worst collectable card game, but was certainly the worst from a major game publisher. This made Solitaire Twister look good. This is not quite as fun as massaging porcupines. If the cards were made of solid gold and cured cancer and warts, it would still not be close to redeeming itself as a game.

Too bad this is a case of a licensing mismatch. On its own the AoM PC game is great. The boardgame found in the AoM box is fine as well. However, it was a horrible use of the AoM license. Many who liked the PC game bought the boardgame expecting a light wargame and were disappointed in not getting it. Many who would like the resource management strategy game found in the boardgame box will never try it because the license tie in and artwork makes it look like a wargame. shake I applaud Eagle for wanting to move toward the Euro market, but think that doing so with a game based on the AoM license was a huge blunder.

Combat Mission is far more than Squad Leader (no offence meant to the board game). CM is THE computer game on WWII. The idea of no time limit for (simultaneous) planning followed by real time action is just great. Could something similar work for a boardgame?

Nate: You have obviously never played Squad Leader. Not only are there not 80 billion tables, but you don't see where any "bullets" hit. It's this simple, look at the firepower value of the firing stack, roll two six sided dice (low is good), modify dice roll for terrain, look at a single chart to see what effect your fire had.

Although I agree that both close combat and combat mission are great games, that do recreate that squad leader feel one often overlooked PC game is Talonsoft's Eastern Front2, much more playable than the battlefield titles, the scale is slightly larger than just squads but it looks and feels very squad leader like. As I just bought a house, I found my copy while packing and got it to work on XP with very little tweaking. You can play single battles or whole campaigns (and your leader appears in the battle, von gibson and gibiski ;-) ), available on e-bay for less than a squad leader moduale, beware the first eastern front does not work on modern machines, I have not played western front.

Actually, no. There was a Great Battles of Hannibal (part of a series that included Great Battles of Alexander and Great Battles of Julius Caesar). The publisher was Interactive Magic. Game play was extremely evocative of the boardgames themselves (namely, GMT's SPQR, GBoA, and Caesar). What works in a boardgame context did not exactly go swimmingly on the PC. The PC game was slow, confusing and often tedious. Cute graphics, though.

Here's a review: http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/reviews/pc/dec97/g...

I had the old Microporse version referred to by Scott. There was a final battle where you went up against some demon with 200 life points and a broken deck, so you used the final duel merely to see how long you banished him. The more life points he loses before you die converts to a length of dparture for Big Mean and Ugly. Somehow, I came up with a deck that managed beat this suppsedly unstoppable force. I won the game and banished him for the maximum length of time, effectively beating the game completely. I think I had some sort of cycling deck with lots of life restoring. At any rate, the details are lost in memory but it was a cool victory. Every strategy guide I ever saw said basically the big guy could NOT be beat.

yeah I saw that too, again it didn't stop me with my rather evil crusade deck (again plenty of life restores)

I have played several times and I have found several decks that work, and that kill the end bad guy.

of the games I have The original "Magic the Gathering" (shandalar)

I have the MTG Encyclopedia. (you could play against other people on the internet with this but you didn't have to "own" the cards (all kind of on the honor system here)
this then sort of changed later on into the Magic Online
which although you can use this to catalogue your collection, in order to use cards online you must own an online copy (I guess they were not making enough money)

there is an open market place for users to use and strangely they use event tickets as currency as they can be easily transfered (known as tix) so you only have to use your credit card or pay pal to get you started

you can also buy tix in bulk from the market at knock down prices ( as some ppl tend to aquire large quantities of them when they trade) you would use pay pal for this)

I have also heard (an seen available for download via kazaa ahem, nasty cough I have there)

about MTG "Battlegrounds" made by atari (who inherited the MTG computer games mantle from microprose)

i know very little about battlegrounds apart from it's existance

ASH

"Battlegrounds" is a real time combat game only loosely based on Magic. You actually control a wizard on screen and cast magic spells similar to those in the card game to defeat your opponent.

Regarding the Microprose Shandalar game and those who own it, but can't get it to run on their current PCs, there is a downloadable version of it available at the-underdogs.org which has been unofficially patched and tweaked to run on current machines. It's up and running fine on my WinXP AMD 2800 machine. The fixes are already integrated into the download and it will not run the original music or intro/end movies off your original disk. However, both the single player game and network duel options work well.

and they were pretty much wrong. Unfortunately, most of these guides were written by videogame guys and not actual magic players. Pretty much any magic player will be able to assemble a deck to obliterate this end boss completely on all but the highest difficulty level. The higher difficultly level doesn't really make the end guy play much better, but the increased aggressiveness of all the enemies makes it a lot more difficult to assemble a decent deck before you've lost the game.

The rules I remember being difficult to understand and nobody ever wanted to play since there was Magic:TG.

An Interplay title, I believe, one of the first out of the resurrected company. Big mistake. The source game was a bore (although it has its steadfast adherents), so how to make a fun, non-repetitive game out of it? Interplay tried to make a silk purse out of this sow's ear, but could not make it a commercial success.

Ah, yes, Dragon Dice. Let us roll a few dozen dice with almost identical markings o them, try to sort out what means what, eliminate a few opponents' dice, rinse, repeat, ad inifinitum. It was just a dreadful game. The dice weren't even attractive, being in some of the butt-ugliest colors one oculd imagine.

I think it's about time for you guys to check it out again since it has improved a lot!
And the computer game doesn't represent the real life version at all anymore!
See my Dragon Dice PC game review!
And check out this fantastic improved new Dragon Dice game with its new reworked rules!
It's complicated, yes! It's complex, yes! But it's worth the effort to learn it!
But this is definitely no game to be judged by just playing three or four games, it's too complex and there are too many different strategies and tactics involved!
As far as uglyness is concerned: Well, that's a matter of taste! There are few ugly ones but most are beautyfully designed!

I playtested this one. Stanley and Associates, I believe, were the programmers. What a pity that company no longer does games-- they are still in business but not a game producer. They made a very faithful rendition of 1830, as well as the first Master of Orion (I think) and Master of Magic. They were working on a PC version of AH's BLACKBEARD when that company pulled the plug on the project. Too bad! I would have loved to see what they would have done with the material.

I really liked the computer version of 1830, and remember that Blackbeard was in the works.

SimTex (via MicroProse) were the developers of Master of Orion and Master of Magic .

This is as close as possible to a game, except that it doesnt enforce the rules, and you are meant to roll dice and move your characters for yourself:

I found this recently:
http://www.allegro.cc/go.php?_url=http%3A%2F%2Fgbhome.wolweb...&

Rather importantly, it seems to lack any way to cast spells, but it seems faithful (and very good) in other respects. Perhaps I should add the link to the heroquest main page.

Well, actually Amberstar, Ambermoon (both Thalion) and Albion (published by Blue Byte) were almost perfect RPGs for the computer. At least the first two ones were. As for Albion, I cannot guarantee that, because the heavy involvement of sf turned me off. Really, mixing science fiction and fantasy should be forbidden

never really got the hang of this one, the part I had most trouble with was stepping out of the APC and getting mugged by 4-5 aliens simultaneous, hang on...that was 80% of the game, the other 20% was having to run through a structure that was in the process of meltdown / critical failure, being chased by nasty monsters.....perhaps I exaggerate a little, but not by that much.

Oh yeah I forgot the bit where you have to walk down dangerous dark tunnels, with obvious alien activity and wait for them to jump out at you when you least expect

have I forgoton anything?

I'm not so good at playing these..but I kinda play as a spotter for a friend of mine.

ASH

Yes, really great computer games, especially the first: along with enemies placed in fixed positions, there were also other enemies appearing from random locations! These feature (missing in the sequel) added a lot of replayability. I remember playing the demo of the first AvP hundreds of times before the release of the finished game.

And yes, the first AvP was definitely hard to beat, considering that before the official patch release there was no in-game save feature!!! A true pain.

I hope that with the incoming (now: june 2004) AvP movie, someone will develop a new good board/wargame.

(It's been a long time since Leading Edge's Aliens...)

I'll provide this one: "After consuming multitudes of 'mutated' foods from the Agri-Corps.' distributors, the total effects from ALL of them have turned me into 'The Mutant-VEGAN!'-with a 'bloodlust' for those that consume Meat!"cool

That's REALLLLLLY stretching the point. I believe Gender Wars was the last gasp of Quantum Quality Productions, a great little PC game company that brought us THE PERFECT GENERAL and THE LAST ADMIRAL, as well as a couple dozen other great titles. IIRC, the Gender conflict theme was very tenuous at best.

There are official versions of both the boardgame and the cardgame of Settlers of Catan. The only reason I can think of why you would want to play the pc version is because you don't have any friends to play the real thing. But it's a pretty nice conversion though.

The AI in the Catan card game is supposedly pretty ropey! Has anyone played this?

My friend Adrian (Finbar Saunders) has broken his leg in a recent accident, and wasn't really up to coming to visit last weekend. Whatever, we played a couple of these games over the net. The interface for Carcassonne, for example, is much better than that on BSW.

Most of the people in my gaming group have PCs. I bet we're going to have excellent fun when Domaine is released as a computer game - we'll be able to squeeze in an extra gaming session each week.
