As game geeks it is second nature or perhaps even an evolutionary survival mechanism to avoid any game that is based upon the idea of rolling some dice, moving a pawn and then end your turn. I received “That’s Life” for Christmas and I was very surprised how much I enjoyed the game. So I decided to look at the top ten rated “Roll and Move” games.

Qualifications: a rating above 6, no expansions count, and at least 100 reviews.

Please feel free to add your favorite R&M games and any comments.

Formula De

My first thought was, “this is a racing game.” Yet, it is by mechanic a roll and move wonder. This is a great game that seems to have an addicting draw to people I have introduced it to. None of whom who are racing fans (well except my buddy Rob who worships at the church of Saint Mark Martin every Sunday morning).

The game has an incredible scale-ability both in the number of players and in the weight variance of the game. It can be easily enjoyed (and explained) by playing one simple lap with the basic game rules by a bunch of non-gamers, all the way up to a grueling multi-lap racing scenario with teams of cars per owner, weather conditions, tire quality. In addition I have witnessed local game stores put on very well attended Formula De tournaments.

Glad to see this on the top of the list

Single lap races a pretty mindless but fun if you're in the right mood especially with a limited number of cars on the track. If you're playing 2 player with two cars each then you might as well play Battleball. With more players you get a bit more to think about. With two lap races the game just takes too long but there is a bit more to think about. Overall, not a game that I'd recommend frequently.

If you could hold off on disparaging Battleball, that would be great. I have cornered the market on $5.00 copies and plan to wait until it is completely out of print, then start planting the seeds of false nostalgia so I can dump them all on Ebay. Battleball is the next Die Macher.

My group loves this game, though I suppose we would hate it if it wern't for these house rules:
1. You have about 5 sec to declare your changes (ie: gear)
2. No using finger to count spaces (can count in head)
3. Cannot go back spaces unless your move is illegal.

We think that these make the game much more realistic, and making even 1 lap races interesting.

Star Wars: Epic Duels

Some people argue about the balance of the games, one side being more powerful then another. I say relax and enjoy this basic game when you need the Star Wars fix or when you are in some late night “What If” debate with your geek friends. The kind of debate about what would happen if Chewbaca got fed up of being bossed around by Solo and tired of Luke’s whiney voice so Chewy joined a band of Storm Troopers and fought Luke and Solo. Admit it, you had some pointless debate about Star Wars like this (Yoda vs. Jawas, Queen’s Guards vs. Hoth Rebel fighters).

Don’t take this game any further then that and everything will be just fine.

This is one of two games on the list that I have not played but seen played. Of these games, this is one that I most want to play. I have heard so many good things and I like what I have seen. There is another sports based roll and move game on this list but this is the game I could see owning out of those two.

Ed,

First, I never feel sorry for anyone who has just purchased games .

Second, (and I am very ashamed to say this). For the last year or so I have lived about four hours from Montreal and have not visited. I know there is this wonderful and legendary game store there (maybe Levalet is the one). I need to get up there. It is hard to travel with a toddler and we don't live close to grand-parents so we can just drop her off for the weekend. I do want to visit, any hints at places other then game stores that we should check out?

I'd like to try this again but the one time I played I got hit by the "you got unlucky four times in a row and therefore you will lose" curse. It does seem like some bad luck at the beginning can put you way behind the other players. Obviously though, this is meant to be a social beer & pretzels game.

Just play with the literal interpretation of the Heal spell (at least in 2nd ed) that resets your life to 4 - whether you had 1 or 7 before.

Sure to set someone back if they start to get too high on "life".

I agree with Roy on this one (except for the Timescape - I hate the Timescape!); the second edition is far superior to the third. I have both, and the third edition, while being better produced, seems to have had all of the fun removed during the streamlining of the rules; it feels like a pale shadow of the second editions glorious gameplay..

This is a great game with little fury woodland creatures racing in an abstract plain of existence. What gets better then that? Well, OK lots of things but don’t let that take away from the fact that this is a wonderful filler that has 40 variants. Count them, 40 Variants! Can’t go wrong with that. A great game to carry with you in your travels from Con to Con and fill your desire to see little fury mammels race.

Probably my least favorite on this list. It is fun but to fiddy to be a light game and to toy factor and light to be a game I take seriously. Don’t get me wrong, this game will probably show up in plenty of yard sales and thrift stores when unsuspecting teens leave at home to go to college, military or where ever. So you can probably get it for cheap. It has that “toy” look that moms see and toss out because they can’t imagine their son or daughter wanting to play with it anymore. Kind of like that 1970s electric vibrating football game.

I dig it as much as Formula De. As far as it being found cheaply, I got two copies from TRU/Amazon in a two-for-one 60% off and free shipping deal. That was $3.74. I traded the other on off for somthing else that I wanted.

Backgammon

A classic. Reminds me of my travels in Greece. How I love the community and culture that surrounds games like backgammon and dominoes in places like Greece, Italy and the Caribbean. In these cultures it is OK to go to a tavern or restaurant, order some bread and drinks and play games with your friends all day long. I dislike the American culture where economics push the rules of “table fellowship.” This idea that restaurant try to turn over tables in 45 to 50 minutes. Sit us down, take drink orders, then food orders, get us out, bus the table and next customer.

How cool would it be to walk into a suburban restaurant chain like Applebees, sit down order a few drinks, some bread sticks and just play games with your friends for three or four hours.

Well, enough pontification and reflection. On to the next game.

Wolgang Krammer lands two games on this list, not bad odds when you consider the entire number of roll and move games that exist. This may find its place in Halloween party games that are easy to explain in a party/social situation.

Is it possible to put together a list that does not include a Knizia game? I thought that this Roll and Move Mechanic would, by the nature of the design, keep the K-man out of this list. No, his omni-presence continues. Not sure how the advance game plays. Otherwise it is a kids game.

Followed by Formula De this is my favorite of the games I have experienced on this list. Another Kramer game and it is the one game on this list that really is a traditional roll and move game.

I would dare to say that this is not a regular Euro game design. It is a traditional game that amazingly is designed very well. This game could can be EASILY explained to anyone who has a grasp on human communication because it is the roll and move kind of game play people grew up with.

Indeed this is a clever little gem that has a decent amount of player interaction, screwage factor and not knowing who has won till the end of the game if you hide the tiles.

I would not hesitate to play it.

This is my favorite game with a roll and move mechanic. There can be some interesting decisions to be made when trying to go through those navigation circles. A random setup on the map makes for a different game each time you play. Forget about the combat rules and play to $2,000 and it ends leaving you wanting to play just a little more, because you could've won in just one more turn.

My vote goes here as well. I agree with deleting the combat rules. They are unecessary. But heck, play to $3000!

The roll and move mechanic is central to this game. Each space provides a different benefit, so the number rolled is important. As such, many of the spells and abilities are designed to affect movement and dice rolls.

It is still roll and move, but it is handled creatively.

I agree with Dan. The roll and move aspect, while central to the game, is the weakest part of the game.

This has got to be the best example of a game that depicts its theme in the worst possible way! This game came out in the early '90s! Even this game:

from 15 years earlier did a better job of depicting a fantasy theme. Although it is without a doubt not a better game from what I can tell.

I'm glad to see someone has added this -- or it would have been a case of me adding CoM to yet another GeekList... something many of you have seen before!

Yes, it's roll and move. Yes, it's luck-heavy... But wow, the information revelation, interplay of secrets and frantic ending make up for it. There are a few very simple ways to quicken the "discovery" stage of the first half of the game, where luck is most lopsided, to get to the "manipulation" and "confrontation" stages.

Still a favorite, despite the pedestrian components. It delivers a gameplay experience unlike anything I've seen in the 700+ different games I've played.

One of the best games, if not THE best game, on this list. I sometimes fear to take this game out of the box because the tension created by the uncertain endgame and the requirement of getting all three rings is so great. My wife's favorite game along with Princes of Florence.

Of the games that I've played on this list I'd say this one is my favorite. Really not a bad game but many just outright dismissed it when it came out because it was 'just a roll and move game'. This is essentially a race game combined with a pick up/deliver mechanic (although you're not actually delivering anything) and the choices you are presented with mostly revolve around making your movements as efficient as possible. Given what you are allowed to do on your turn, maximizing each and every turn can get challenging. Really fun game at the lighter end of the spectrum.

Probably my favorite of the roll and moves. Like someone noted below...a cross between Monopoly and Acquire. A staple and one that can be pulled out with everyone knowing how to play. Heck, my son will play it (and he's a RPGer and LARPer).

Also, as far as I'm concerned, an EXCELLENT gateway game.

This is, indeed, a superb roll-and-move game. Even though people say "it's like Monopoly" (and it is), I like it a lot. Good as Outpost is, this is probably the best TimJim/Prism game because it plays much, much faster than the rest.

Yeah I'd say this one is as good as Outpost but then again I find outpost to be tedious. Outpost has a real nice theme but the game play stinks when you realize that between equal players the player(s) that gets the higher initial totals for their factories' products will quickly gain an advantage over their rivals that is insurmountable due to the fact that they can more quickly buy the higher priced money producers. Those better factories will in turn give them even a bigger leader over the less fortunate players. Fast Food Franchise also punishes those who are unlucky enough too fall behind early. Not only does the person who is unlucky enough to land on an opponents space have to pay them but they also immediately let them expand their lead by buying another store for their chain.

Jon,

Never played but I did some looking and the geek does not list what Mechanic this game is based on. I did read up pn this game and I sent a note that is should be listed as a roll and move.

Next time it should show up when someone does research on R&M games.

I would agree that this game brought much fun to our group even though it took a while. Actually we played this before 2 hour games were considered long. Heck now if a game last an hour and a half it gets beaten up for being too long. Thats a sad commentary on the NEW gaming geek.

In the kids' category, my pick would be Geistertreppe with the Flaschengeist expansion (and the variant where you can swap disks or ghosts).

Mago Magino is good too, but less fun for any adults involved.

Geistertreppe is very nice. It's a bit too simple for adults but the kids love it. Certainly better with more players since the ghost swapping gets more interesting. What does the expansion add to the game?

And Mago Magino too! I picked this up for my kids at Christmas and my older daughter just loves it. I've played the game at least 20 times since Christmas. Great components, interesting choices for kids, what's not to like! It does play better with more players though. My wife isn't a game player but my daughter talked her into it once. I was in the next room and listened with pride as my 5 year old proceeded to explain the game very clearly and didn't leave out a single thing! Just like Dad taught her!!

Expansion adds 5th/6th players if desired and the ability to freeze a ghost (yours or someone else's) for a turn (i.e. the next ghost roll).

Re Mago Magino. The thing I like best is how the witch keeps everyone involved regardless of whose turn it is. That's an admirable (maybe even crucial) attribute in a game for little kids. What's not to like? Very little challenge for an adult (remembering which frog you are). I tend to prefer dexterity, memory, speed, or bluffing games when I play with kids because they keep me involved. Mago Magino can send me into autopilot.

IIRC, you could theoretically play an entire game of Circus Maximus without rolling any dice beyond the initial driver/chariot assignments. It would be the most boring game of Circus Maximus EVAR, but it could be done.

Nice idea for a list...but I think most entries don't qualify as "Roll and Move" games : they are just games using dice.

To include Titan, Street Soccer or Heimlich and Co in this list stretches the concept too far, IMHO.

It is easy to list good games with dice. It is more difficult to find good R&M games, for sure. I think half the games on this list should be scraped, not because they are bad but because they just don't smell like R&M, not in the way Merchant of Venus, Rail Baron or Broadway do.

As it is, I find the name of this list to be misleading
