Which games of 2006 will garner the most hype as they move towards release and beyond? Last year Caylus hype was deafening and furious! And, it would appear (based upon ratings on BGG) that it has lived up to its hype rather nicely.

Which game will be most sought after this year? We are 1 month done with 11 to go. Which publisher/designer will be the focus? A few games have already been published of course, Command and Colors: Ancients by GMT and Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation, Deluxe Edition by Fantasy Flight. They were highly anticipated in 2005.

I've added those games/expansions that the BGG community seem to want (in trade) as of this date. I've included the number of Users Wanting the game at this point for each entry. Games that had below 15 users as wanting did not make the list.

However, I'd love to learn of others. 2005 was a record year for me in terms of number of games played. There were a lot of great releases. In addition, I began to play games that had been on my list for a long time. I played such a wide variety of games in 2005 that I am looking forward to more in 2006. But, which new ones will dominate the scene?

And for the record, I do not think that these stats truly reflect the demand for a game. I just think that they are all I have (along with general discussion I am privy to) to go on right now.

Ahh Alea! Alea is synonomous with quality and fun, in my opinion. Each game I've played by them has brought joy- though Palazzo a lesser joy. 8-)

This game is from Karsten Hartwig of Chinatown and Lucky Loop fame. Chinatown is a great game. Lucky Loop is quite different but also fun- less of a gamer's game, to be sure.

Anyone know anything about this one?

Alea gets a pass on the less than 15 rule b/c it's my Geeklist. 8-)

My Warrior Knights games (GW) take 3-4 hours; not a marathon. The new 'faith' tokens to counter events are wussy - I mean, it is an event! Bad things happen! Battles with cards? 2-turn automatic seiges? Way too in line with modern Euros for me.

This is one game on my 'must get as soon as it comes out' list. I have played AGoT and from what I've read, the political elements in Warrior Knights have a greater impact on the game. Not to mention the combat systems are different as is many aspects of the game.

The only similarities in the game are fantsy setting, and war/strategy genre.

Warrior-Knights vs. Game of Thrones ... no contest. Great blend of Kingmaker (improved parliment) and Diplomacy (sorry I'm not attending council; I'm off to sack your stronghold!) Nice economic twists with the merc auctions and spice boats.

GoT just didn't seem to ignite the same level of player involvement, though it does have good theme and interesting mechanics.

BTW ... I'm not saying that GoT is a bad game, but W-K just seemed to offer more ways of breaking your opponent's eggs.

I have played Europe Engulfed once and it has really grabbed me. Once you start playing the game is pretty straightforward. It is large, indeed, but there are smaller scenarios available. Asia Engulfed looks interesting- the Pacific Theatre is quite interesting.

I doubt it. If your problem is that it isn't scary enough, I really doubt the expansion can fix the problem.

Of course, it is all part of the two pronged dilemma of the expansion.devil

Prong 1: This game is great! I'd better get the expansion cos that will be great too!
Prong 2: This game sucks! I'd better get the expansion cos that fixes it!

Really really wanted to like this game but my problem with it is that you spend more time reading cards, adjusting things and remembering special effects than actually doing anything interesting. A streamlined version would be great but i somehow doubt that this expansion is going to offer that.

the thing about Heroscape is that at some point, perhaps as it starts to wane, someone is going to plug in the perfect variant combat system and homebrew expansion and turn it into a budget warmachine. Then it will achieve greatness, as opposed to "very goodness."

Maybe because some of us have nostalgic feelings about our childhood and the Marvel comics we read back then.

And the fact that the game's being designed by the people that brought us War of the Ring.

I'd like to try a Marvel Superheroes game, so long as it doesn't involve random product. I have a Love/Hat relationship with War of the ring: it is a sound game, but my ADD can't take the length.

I was very young when we found the Marvel Comics Super Heroes Strategy Game at Thrift Town, and I enjoyed that. I also liked X-Men: Mansion Under Siege, during my teens. There's never been a solid Fantastic Four or Avengers game (to my knowledge).

Definitely feel some anticipation, but I'm going to wait on some reviews.

I've played Memoir '44 a few times and it's fun. But, there isn't enough tug or hook to it for me. I don't think this system works best in WWII. I'm pumped to play CaC: Ancients though as I think it's a better setting for this sort of game.

Look for more Ambush situations; units in jungle might be able to use Recon cards as Ambush cards, for example. I'm also picturing more types of Bunkers, Cave Complexes, and more Engineering rules (demo charges, flamethrowers, Armored Bulldozers, anyone?).

Prediction: Japanese tank will be Type 97 Medium.

Tanks and Inf are not even close to the same in this game.

Tanks move 3 , roll 3 dice for all ranged combat, can take ground and battle again and are harder to hit.

Inf move 1 and attack or can move 2 with not attacking option, roll 3-1 die depending on the range, can take ground but can not battle again, and are the easiest units to hit on the battlefield. But other than that they exactly the same as Armor.

Great game system and I can't wait to get my hands on this one.

The DoW M'44 site now has pics of the Japanese components up as well as the back of the box and a terrain sample or two (cave tile illustrated). Rules coming shortly. Japanese tank is a Type 95 Light, and it appears there are only twelve in the expansion, rather than 24. Makes sense considering that the Japanese were not big on large armored formations.

There will be counters for ships, at least aircraft carriers and destroyers. No miniatures for these.

However, substituting minis from A&A or some other source should do nicely if desired.

Eight scenarios are included. No mention of a board, although there is a list of new terrain types. Also mentioned is an upcoming set of terrain card info to cover all the new terrain types. This will reportedly be available for free at cons or for the cost of s/h from DoW.

I want to be one of the first so I can make sure another caylus doesn't happen (small print run, only a few get them). Anyone?

Another one that should do very well. Ticket to Ride is a great game, many think it sophomore slumped with TtR: Europe but in many ways I think people thought it would be the same game with a different map. TtR: Europe is a different game based upon the same system. I wonder how the Marklin edition will be hyped with the addition of the passenger/merchandise mechanic?

Did they really? I am not so sure. If that had been the case, then DoW would simply have made new maps available (as has been the case for Power Grid, for example). TtT:E was always going to be a slighly different game - IMO, a better one, too, improving the original in terms of routes, and offering more choices and game play options (tunnels, stations), without making the basic game more complex. I also think more people in the rest of the world (ie us "non Americans") relate better to the home of railways, and the evocation of European history. Or, maybe not. goo

Either way, there was no slump about TtR: Europe!

I am really looking forward to playing it. I think I'm basing the slump everyone that I know that has both games and only enjoys the first. Also, DoW's website at any given point- games of the US version being played far far outweigh the European one. And, it seems like Europeans far outweigh Americans for people playing at any given time based upon the lack of English in the forums.

That along with raw sales data. My bother spoke with the CEO of Days of Wonder about his business a few months ago. TtR is what made the firm. Tt:E doesn't even come close to it in sales. That is a slump when it is a part of the same game system and line. As the CEO, you want Tt:E to be as good, if not better. It wasn't. Doesn't make it a bad game at all, though.

Why would it matter if it did? Nobody is forcing you to use it. Why do people claim that expansions ruin games? If there ever was a bad expansion for a good game, I wouldn't whine about how it "ruined the game", I'd simply continue to play without it.

Wow, funny.

Why? Because when you love a game, Matthew, you look forward to it's expansions and growth. You really WANT to love anything else associated with it. But, sometimes the expansions take away or they alter the game in a way that isn't likeable. "Ruin" was just a word I used. You pointed out the obvious (which I'm aware of) that I don't need to use any expansion. Are you whining right now about people whining about expansions?

. . . which of course would be fine if it was free; the problem is expansions cost money. I think the reason people don't like bad expansions that they might pay $35.95 for an expansion that "ruins" the game. I'd say that would be something to complain about.

This has to be one of the longest waits for a game to actually arrive on the shelves after it's actual expected release period. This potentially had game of the year all over it for 2005... now I wonder if it's not going to just get lost in the shuffle in 2006. What could actually be the problem with the printing of this one? I know there were reportedly problems which made it a no-show at Essen...but 7 months seems like a long time to sort out printing problems.

...ok..I've read through some other threads and looks like this will be out June/July...so at least there's a possible actual date now...they may as well have waited and released it at Essen again. This still looks like a killer game to me and reading the thread from ProLudo about how heavy the competition is in the game publishing business was interesting...sounds like the pieces of the pie are being chopped into smaller and smaller pieces. Exponentially more games each year and less money being paid for them.

Hopefully we continue to see the same high quality output going forward that we have in the past. Is this intense competition in the market the reason games like Goa and El Grande aren't coming back to market...because they don't want to take the financial hit if the releases don't indeed sell 10000+ copies as the margins on the games are ever-decreasing?

This is the game I'm obsessed about.. I simply love the other two games in this serie so this one cannot go entirely bad. I wish I could jump through time to the release date of this one.

23 users are currently looking forward to it.

Winter is comming!

It's in the final stages of playtesting now, and the FFG website rants suggested it would be off to the printer's this month.

I'd love to play AGoT again. We played it a few times (without the expansion) and it was enjoyable. Just moved on to other games.

Oh, they playtest?

Hope springs eternal, but I'm waiting for an actual playtested, seriously good, non-Knizia game from FFG without all the bells and whistles. Just a truly good game. Maybe someday; they're releasing a lot of stuff now.

Winds of Plunder sounds pretty cool. I went ahead and pre-ordered it from GMT last month. I'm hoping it will be printed before June when I hook up with my college buddies.

I'll add a similar comment as Kevin did for Conquest of Paradise: we still need lots of pre-orders to get Winds of Plunder published sooner, rather than later. 500 "makes the cut", but we need to get higher in the pre-order count to move up in the production queue.

As with CoP, if you would buy this game on-line (if it was available), please consider going to the GMT Games web site and pre-ordering.

http://www.gmtgames.com/p500/gmtp50.asp

And, again, thanks to those who have already pre-ordered!

Tony, you copycat! Although you improved on my shilling by posting the link to GMT.

These two games (WoP and CoP) have had a difficult time on GMT's P500 list, since they are not typical games for them. (The GMT folks decided that they were such good games, the'd add them to their list anyway.) Tony has helped me a lot with promoting my game, so I'm quite pleased to see him using my template this time. On to 750!

As far as I know, FFG does not have the license to this game. It wasn't one of the games announced at GAMA last year.

I've heard that Columbia was working a game using the Hammer of the Scots system, but for War of the Roses. I'd buy such a game in a heartbeat. Now that Kingmaker is out of print, I can't think of a strategic level game of this era.

Back in Nov. of 2004 Jerry Taylor announced that he was thinking about a game with this theme. He mentioned that several others had approached Columbia about similar games so he was in a wait and see mode before going ahead with any work. It would be a very interesting theme. I'd hope there'd be a good mechanism for some political actions to really flesh out the theme.

A Columbia Games version of "War of the Roses" would be fabulous. But would it be multi-player like Kingmaker? As long as it plays well with 2 that would be fine.
