Such an underated game. This one always gets pulled out near the end of the night - regardless of the style of games that we've played. Heavy gamers like it, light gamers like it, our wives like it. It is always fun, and ultimately that's what we're looking for in a good game.

I just wish the game components were up to par. Too cheaply manufactured, but we're working on a custom board and play-mat that will solve these problems.

I appreciated the video when I saw it on Youtube. Some of the rules in the rulebook weren't clear to me, so it helped seeing and hearing them. Thank you.

This is our favorite party game. I need to write a review of it. I generally dislike these but Hoopla, while not revolutionary, is really a lot of fun.

Hoopla is excellent and quite hard.

I'm one of those who thinks the original Cranium is much better than most folks care to admit, but I agree that Hoopla is a smashing game.

The Japanese version plays by default only two rounds (East & South), plus the dealer doesn't repeat during the East round on a draw hand(unless he is 'Ready'). The downside is Japanese Mah-Jongg has a steeper learning curve...i.e. hand value minimums to be legal, a bunch of special hands to memorize, plus the Dora and Riichi rules.

Sigh. I love my wife.

Exceptionally useful...before I played Indonesia I ended up watching this explanation twice, and it really helped me to grasp the game mechanics much more firmly.

I plan to point all of my new players to the file, because it really seems like the easiest way to learn the game.

Thanks for this one in particular Scott!

I couldn't agree with Michael more...this one was very useful! Reading the rulebook, although it is organized well enough, didn't have enugh examples and some concepts were blurry. This vlog really cleared most things up.
Thanks alot, Scott!

Thanks! I bought this game because of your vlog. And I was able to turn around and explain it perfectly to some people I picked up at the airport (my fiancee being one of them) in the car, and then we started playing immediately when we got home, because of how good of a job you did (and the game is not all that hard to grasp, let's be honest ). Thanks again!

This is a very hot game for me now, and I thank you for your vlog - although I had already convinced myself to buy it, your vlog solidified that resolve. Many thanks, keep it up! I hope to see you on your own proper TV show some day.

Thanks for your explanation Scott. The first time I played Antike, it took almost three hours(!), with much meta-gaming analysis on the part of some around the table, as to how others should be playing the game. I resolved never to play it again.

Anyway, many weeks later, after viewing your very entertaining video, Antike was what everyone wanted to play, and I allowed myself to be persuaded. It actually wasn't too bad. The players were all different, but I think it was your explanation that made the real difference.

Looks like a decent (with the expansion) NFL simulation. I still would prefer Paydirt (I still own my 1978 edition), as it has more plays (9 offensive, 6 defensive) and thus more strategy options. If I saw it in a local store I would pick it up to have a game covering recent teams.

BTW, Paydirt is very easily adapted to play in a solitaire setting. You can make up charts representing different field position, down, and yardage remaining situations and use a die to choose the opposing team's play. These charts can be quite detailed, taking score and time remaining into account as well. I would think that this game could be handled in a similar manner. Avalon Hill's old 'All-Star Replay' magazine had a few articles on solitaire coaching systems for PD and 'Bowl Bound' the college football version.

If I am feeling energetic someday, I will put something up in the 'Paydirt' section.

I'm not a big fan of Ticket to Ride, but seeing Alan Moon sit in on your show was pretty interesting. To be able to see a designer describe and explain his own games is a unique opportunity.

And it's also a sign that BGWS is getting pretty big! Very exciting!

I wasn't expecting to care much about the episode, but Marklin does look pretty neat. Long routes & short routes balanced, throw in passengers and country connection cards...it all adds up to be something interesting I think.

I was surprised there wasn't any discussion of the lower denominations, since nearly all the 18xx discussions on this topic strongly suggest getting chips in $2 and $20 denominations.

Having watched most of the excellent "Board Games With Scott" episodes, this is my favourite.

I like poker and blackjack, both of which are of course better and easier with chips, and so the idea of ditching board game paper money for chips occurred to me previously. I thought I was familiar with the types of chips out there, but this episode was a real eye opener to the various options. Still I think I can add a few comments, on why chips should be used, suggest a standard denomination by colour, and offer some chip usage tips.

When it comes to chips, casinos are the masters at their usage; their methods and techniques are sound and efficient. In all the many games of chance (not just poker, which is why I refer to chips as chips, and not poker chips; actually I think the correct term is "token"), casinos simply won't allow game play with anything other than their own chips. Why is this? For three reasons:
1. ease and speed of use (faster games)
2. disassociate players from their money (promotes gambling freely)
3. durability (cheaper)

Ever watch a casino dealer handle chips? There is no way they could handle paper money even remotely as quick, and despite this speed the players can easily follow along. A single chip is easy to pickup and handle, it does not need to be unfolded, flattened, will always stay level, won't blow away, doesn't mind getting dirty, and can be cleaned. Things get even better with groups of chips, as handling is still very easy, while counting can be done fast and at a glance if the chips are uniformly stacked. A large heap of chips can be counted in seconds, by making stacks of chips of equal height. Doing simple math on multiple stacks of chips will give the total without having to pickup and count each and every one.

In gambling players tend to view chips without the caution of bills. They disassociate themselves from their money. A bet of $100 on a hand of blackjack is more likely to occur if all the player has to do is put down a single black chip, then if they had to reach in their pocket and pull out a roll of bills; even a single Benjamin is cause for thought. In a betting situation, it's very easy to create a stack of chips with the same colours as the stack you have to match, and as such there is no need to know the actual amount you're betting. Don't fall into this trap. Always be aware of what the chips mean.

Like coins, chips are far more durable then bills. A coin in constant general circulation is expected to last at least 20 years, while a bill is not expected to last more than a year. Quality chips should outlast their owner, and can be used across any game where money is tracked. Even the cheapest chips are more usable then paper.

There are a few other aspects of chips outside the scope of the episode:
1. The need for some slipperiness
2. Denominations by colour
3. Counting chips
4. Hiding chips

While it is important for stacking that the chips tend to stick together as Scott explains extremely well, it's also important that the chips can still slide off each other. Why? It helps to match stacks of chips. A casino dealer will issue say 10 chips, by first counting out (by eye or feel) a stack of 5 chips, and then placing a much large stack of chips next to the stack of 5, and with their index finger sliding off the excess leaving behind another stack of 5. For 20 chips, a stack of 5 is created, and 3 equal height stacks are measured off. In this way only a few chips (usually 5 of them) have to be counted (by eye or feel), the rest is about creating stacks and simple arithmetic. You could create stacks of 10 chips, but a stack this tall is harder to manage and increases the likelihood of being knocked over when measuring off additional stacks. For counting, 5 chips per stack is what the casinos use as it works best. Why reinvent the wheel?

As for the values of the chips, my suggestion is to follow the casino standard. Yellow=0.5, white=1, red=5, green=25, black=100, purple=500, orange=1000, gray=5000. Why? I'd rather not make a $100 bet in a casino by mistake, because I got use to thinking of the black chip as $5 for some board game. Besides it's less stuff to remember if you use one standard across all games. If you follow the standard casino chip colour values, then it becomes unnecessary to have a printed value or sticker on any chip, nor do you have to constantly flip chips over to the printed side if they are only printed on one side. In a casino setting players tend to ignore what's printed (it's mainly a casino identification to prevent chips from else where being used) on the chip, and refer to chips by colours. For example a player wanting change for a $100 in bills may say "3 greens and the rest in reds". In the event that your game needs higher denominations, just multiply by 10, 100, or whatever, and so a white $1 chip could be worth $100, while a black $100 chip is now a $10000. If you need a memory aid, set up a reference near the game by putting the corresponding chip on the appropriate bill from the original game.

With the standard casino chip colours, and stacking chips in groups of 5, counting chips becomes trivial. A single stack of yellow chips is $2.50, (5 chips at $0.50 each), a stack of white is $5, for red $25, for green $125 (5 chips at $25 each), and for black $500. 10 stacks of yellow chips is $25, 4 stacks of red is $100, 4 stacks of green is $500, and 2 stacks of black is $1000.

What happens if the player needs a non-multiple of 5 chips, say 24 chips. Easy. Count off (by eye or feel) a stack of 5, then measure off 3 more stacks, so that's 4 stacks of 5 chips each, or 20, and lay the remaining 4 chips down individually. An even better technique would be to create 5 stacks of 5 chips, then remove one chip (so you have 4 in one stack) and slightly skew that stack to form a "staircase", which calls attention to the fact there are less then 5 chips in that stack. An easy way to skew stacked chips is to give them a flick of the index finger, not enough to knock them over but enough to get the staircase effect, so that each chip can be easily seen as a step in the staircase. If you stack chips in groups of 5 and use the staircase effect, then anyone can glance at a bunch of chips and easily tally up their value. Watching a casino dealer at work handling chips could also be helpful for other chip techniques, and for this you don't even have to gamble.

One commenter mentioned a need for a $20 chip. You could use a non-standard casino chip colour (say brown), but I'd suggest using 4 red chips ($5 x 4) instead. A payoff would be either in an identical stack of red chips (a larger stack measured off with the index finger), or a single green chip (valued at $25) and the loss of one of your red chips ($25 -$5 =$20).

Scott mentioned in the video that there may be a need to somehow hide the amount of chips you have from other players. I'd suggest using stacks of other than 5 chips, mixing up the colours within the stack, as well as putting your low denomination chips out front and visible to other players, while hiding your high denomination chips in a row behind and on the bottom of their stacks and with low denominations on top. In this way other players can't use simple arithmetic to count your chips, nor can they see your higher denomination chips.

One last note. Scott mentioned the possible confusion caused by multi-coloured edge spots, especially if they match a chip colour. I agree, and prefer mostly solid coloured edges with small white edge spots. What is the purpose of the edge spots, anyhow? Edge spots make distinguishing the chips in a stack much easier. In any event from a casino perspective, the dealer handles chips by stacks, and the video surveillance captures mostly overhead views, so the edge is mostly a convenience to the player and when chips are stored in their racks.

In summary, there needs to be a balance between sticky and slippery chips to promote stacking as well as ease of measuring off and creating identical stacks of chips, and thereby being able to count stacks of 5 chips at a glance. In addition I'd suggest using the casino colour chip values as the standard in all games.

I hope this long comment is helpful to some.

This was my first intro to your gamming vlog. I was lloking into this game and stumbled across your vlog. I am a faithful sunscriber now and have purchased several games including this one due to your video reviews. Thanks, and keep up the good work. P.S. I did email Rio to let them know.

Scott, while Power Grid may not be a Die Macher or Warfrog game, I'd sure rate it as a heavy-weight.

In any case, I really like what you're doing, Scott. Particularly the humour you bring to the table. Thanks.

Great review. I have used some of your vlog links to have people in my gamming group watch before we play so they can get familiar to the game. It seems to work, so basically your doing the work for me thanks Scott.

I second Old Hat's comment. I thought the theme sounded boring. but I was SO wrong! I bought it right away and after one play I ordered the expansions! This is a "powerfully" good game! Thanks Scott for the vid and a big thanks to Friedemann for another hit!

Another great vlog Scott. Thank you. I bought the game and e-mailed a link to my gaming group so we could get a head start on the intro to the game.

I also wanted to comment on the huge amount of work you put into these videos. Getting an interview with the designer is above and beyond and I surely appreciate it.

Keep up the good work!

Yes, just as I suspected, we got off the ground quickly and without delay, everyone tha tplayed had watched your video and there was only minor questions before we started up. The games went so smoothly it was commented (tongue in cheek i hope) that from now on, we should only play new games in which Scott has taught us through video example.

The real reason of this episode was to introduce people to Attribute. Apples to Apples was presented as an entry point to people as they might feel comfortable with that game.

The geeklist format doesn't let me make two games in an entry, and I want my numbers in the list to correspond to the show numbers.

Finally, please remember that my intended audience for the show goes far beyond the BGGers. Through my entries in Itunes and DemocracyTV, many people completely new to this hobby are finding the show. So, I want to do shows like this interspersed with new things, figuring some viewers might think, "Hey, I've played that..." and then see something new or try a different episode.

Yeah but like Scott said, Apples to Apples isn't as popular as you'd think. I've never brought it out and have someone say "Hey I've played that" or even "Hey I've heard of that".

And why not review old games? Scott reviewed Mah Jongg and that isn't exactly a hot new release

Attribute looks interesting. I don't like games like Things in a Box or Balderdash where everyone writes their own answers as things tend to get silly. But having one person create a noun for each round, matched by cards by everyone else...is pretty neat. And the slap jack element could be fun too, much more appealing than Apples' "throw something in as fast as possible" version of things.

"MauerBauer" is such a silly name. They were sacrificing the chance on a good name for an alliteration that's simply stupid.
Indeed, it is wrong: A "Bauer" is a farmer, not a builder. *Sigh* Just children say "Bauer", derived from "bauen" (to build).

Yet another that Scott has helped pursuade me into purchasing. I even dropped a line to Rio Grande games to let them know how much his video reviews are pursuading me. I'm not sure that the review on Die Macher is going to get me there though (I'd love to give it a try after watching that review, but it is too long for most of my gamer friends).

The term "Maschinenbauer" (mechanical engineer) certainly is not a kid's term and does not mean ...farmer either - and there are many more examples.

In fact, though I do not know the game, I do like the title.

BTW - this is no alliteration (= same first letters), just a simple rhyme.

Really loved the video. I bought it because of your explanation. I do need to correct you on one issue. You said that you play round one and then repeat it 7 times. You only repeat it 6 times. There are 7 rounds in the game, not 8.

Put on my wishlist based on your video.
Recently got it as a present and even more recently started played it. Watched your video first again before digging thru the rule book.

Your video has helped me understand the rules in a single shot.

It's a marvelous game, but I was lucky to have a dedicated boardgaming weekend otherwise the time to play would not allow it to be played.

Thanks for this video!

scott, let me say that i'm pretty much a newbie to this whole world of board games, but i've sought out video tutorials to help me grasp these games, and have come across many - some with many more people involved or more high tech graphics, but none come close to your focus on explaining things simply, clearly, and visually. bravo.
