I really, really hate it when I'm checking out a Geeklist and there is a game entry on there that someone doesn't like and they leave a short little comment that basically says, 'I don't like this game" or "this game is bad". Sure, they'll try to say that in a clever way but their comment will have nothing at all to do with the other ideas in the list. You know some of the games I'm talking about.

Comments like that are generally pointless and, well, I don't like them and they are bad.

I was thinking of an idea for a Geeklist and as I was wording the introductory comments in my head I was thinking of these types of comments and I was saying to myself, " . . . and they really they belong on another Geeklist. In fact, a Geeklist that was just that might be funny." So here it is. I'll do that other List later.

I think I'll start with the most obvious games that receive out-of-the-blue pointless comments and let you add your own.

Here they are. Have at it. Please feel free to add items and comments.

People just can't seem to pass this on a list without comparing it to medieval torture or having a root canal. Oh, sorry. Now you'll have to come up with something new.

I know! This one gets slammed a lot, but I see people playing it. And there is, like, 500 different versions, so someome is playing.

I want to try playing it sometime.

My take on this game. Set up a timer and whoever has the highest level when time is up wins.

Best played by the casual "beer and pretzel" players. Despite being told by the higher-ups to run anime-themed games, at the anime convention game room, we estimated in the *hundreds* the number of players (and probably a hundred as the number of times) this game was played over a three-day weekend. The only more often played game was Apples to Apples.

The people I know who have it generally don't play it.

It's partly because they can't find others to play it with, and partly because they are buying it for the card contents, not the game play.

Most common "game" of muchkin i've seen is "Well, I got the power armor and the axe of doom while wearing the girdle of giant strength, but lost to a guy with a petticoat" type oneupsmanship, sometimes accompanied by digging through the stack to prove said cards exist. (I've no clue if the above do.)

And yes, I've played it. I found it boring and snowball intensive.... because one guy quitely gets a big edge, then runs away. Usually not the "Obvious Leader" who is getting picked on by everyone.

The few people I know who do enjoy this game for it's gameplay are people I choose not to game with becase the title is an accurate description of their play style...

And I love the 15 minutes of fun crammed into 3 or 4 hours of play description.

I think the hate for this one mainly comes from overexpectations. It isn't supposed to be a brilliant game. Hell, it barely is supposed to be a game at all. It is a dungeon crawling parody with some gaming elements, and one of those 'games' where winning actually doesn't matter.

As is, i just *love* it, and so do many of my roleplaying buddies. I just don't get tired of the stupid situations Munchkin generates, though we're not playing it week-in week-out. laugh

YOu know, sometimes the reason the comments are short is because the game isn't worth the time to spit on it (see, this sentence is already too long). A complete review for this could be: "It has always been a useless waste of time, anytime I've played it or seen it played." And even that's wasting too much breath. Some games are just so inconsequential that going on for a paragraph is unnecessary.

Then, why post anything about them at all, unless there's a good reason? Not trying to be inflammatory here, just wondering is all.

Probably because he's commenting on the list, not the game.

I played Fluxx once, and thought it was pretty cool. But we were able to get the game finished in a little under 10 minutes. I can see how people would despise the game beyond anything else if they were stuck in a session that lasted over 30 minutes.

Again, it seems it's a "not for everyone" game. It can be quite enjoyable in the right company. It's a pretty big seller for Looney Labs, so again, people are playing it.

If you REALLY want to make your feelings known, in a place where it might actually make a difference, consider filling out the Fluxx Consumer Survey that Looney Labs have recently made

Happens a lot on this game. I have a couple of friends that would rather be hit in the shins with a hammer than attempt this game!
I happen to love the game. Sure...if you forget the mechanics you have to do a lot of referencing...but the game is a true masterpiece in my mind!

Yep. But remember that "your most ardent fans are your worst critics". I think Zombies falls into the category of "there's a good game here somewhere" games. Ditto for Betryal at the House on the Hill, and Monsters Menace America.

I think it's a simple truth that the most effort around here goes into the consensus favorites, either tearing them down or defending them. The least effort goes into talking about games that are despised, especially games that are despised for numerous reasons. Why be arsed to explain why?

I think that any comment, however brief, is better than a rating with no comment at all. And a "great game" comment isn't any more illuminating than a "lousy game" comment.

I also find the behavior you're poking fun at ridiculous at times. But I don't mind it if at the same time the person is including genuine insight (like latindog) or is actually being funny (like Barnes whose presence is expected shortly). Also, a lot of these comments appear when the item is being listed as "Ain't this a grand game?" or "Why these games are better than other games" type lists. In other words, the comments can be appropriate to the list in question as they were on this one.

Just because people can be too boorish doesn't mean that other people aren't being too uptight.

Finally, does it need to be pointed out that this list includes some just terrible games? That people aren't just bashing games at random?

This is funny. My intention was for this list to be a list of otherwise pointless comments so that here they would actually be appropriate. People would have the opportunity to make those scathing comments that don't really fit on other lists and they could be as creative and clever as they wanted.

There's a certain irony that all the comments here are thoughtful and make good points.
