My wife is definitely NOT a heavy eurogamer, that being said I'm trying to introduce her to the hobby. Here are the games that I have tried and the result, either like, dislike, try it again or never again. Feel free to add your own to the list!

I should add that most of the time when she and I play it's just the two of us, so most of my games are two player only, but feel free to add as many as you like!

P.S. If you like the list, thumb it up! :-)

I'm thinking about getting the switzerland expansion to see if that would help her like to play more since it's quicker and more interesting than the base game with 2 people.

i was thinking exactly the same thing.

the switzerland expansion seems to be getting quite some praise and might be just what we need to make TtR a more s/o-friendly game
(in the sense that if you play just with two, it counts as "quality time")

2. Board Game: Carcassonne [Average Rating:7.46 Overall Rank:88]

I think it was the combination of scoring and the unfamiliarity with tile games that put her off Carcassonne. In fact, I've tried introducing two friends to this game as well and neither is very impressed with it. Maybe it's just too abstract, or not exciting enough with two people. Any suggestions on how to get her to try again and have more fun with it?

Update: We've had a long discussion on this and she really has issues with games that have spacial issues... we'll see this more and more down the list.

Maybe a lot of people just find it to be a dull game?

I enjoy playing with my 5 year old daughter, but would never pick this to play with adults. I know that other people enjoy it, but don't assume that everybody can like it just because it has a lot of fans. (That's true about any game of course!)

This is my most played game (pretty much all of 'em 2 player with my wife!)
She's malicious, a mean player, aggressive in her actions and always trying to win by cutting in, stealing fields and generally playing hard.
I play the same with her and therefore be both love playing it and it's always an excellent competition with a pretty even spread of victories.

Of course a relatively small proportion of couples can get away with playing it quite so aggressively and both parties enjoying it.
A while back she came to the games club I was attending at the time and decimated the other two guys, cutting in on their fields and roads with her big meeple (we ALWAYS play Inns & Cathedrals to add to the nastiness) and wondering why they didn't play as mean back.

Gotta love it.

This was my first successful introduction of a game which she actually liked and requested to play again. At first we didn't know you could pick up cards from the middle piles, and once that happened it got much more tense!

This was a definite like, and I'd challenge you to find a woman who wouldn't like this one. Simple and elegant.

When I brought Can't Stop home and pulled out the board she was not in such a great mood, but I explained the rules and we trodged through the first few rounds. After 3 rounds she got it and gave it an "eh", which I think means she'll try it again. I think she liked that it was straightforward and kind of a race game.

To Court The King was our first step into what I'd consider for her level of gameplay to be a eurogame. She had a lot of trepidation about the cards, and not knowing what each one did. I told her for each roll what she could do and by the end of the second game she felt a lot better about it. I'll see if I can continue the forward motion on this one. Not sure though.

We played with our 12 year old daughter and my wife went totally cutthroat, taking trucks my daughter wanted. It was great to see her being mean to someone other than me.

I hope I am not being sexist when I say women are probably better at choosing presents for their partner than men are, GiftTRAP is all about choosing the best gifts from a selection, so maybe your wife will feel she has the upperhand even before the game starts. Now for the bad news, its not a 2 player game. 3-8 players so this one will have to wait until theres friends over.

The theme is all fantasy. It's a card-driven area control game - draw a card, place or move pieces, several scoring rounds.

I think it's different when you're a woman introducing a wargame to your husband. Everytime I ask her to learn a new game she says "It's not Memoir '44 is it?" ... I doubt I'd get her to play this, although I personally love it, and do wish she would play it. *sniff sniff*

Last night she helped me punch a few counters and I asked if the chits made it any less daunting than Memoir '44. She said "Heck no! Looks more complicated." As my friend and I were then playing Battlelore she left as she said it sounded way too complicated... *sigh*

Anye, would you agree most of these games only seem complicated on the surface? Woman to Woman if she reads this, tell her why she should try CC:E. :-)

I'm planning on trying this one with her. I think she might like it, but the text on the cards might be confusing for her since she's not played many games with VP and production before. Maybe after POTE.

This was has not been a success with my wife yet. We've played twice with two other players and both times she played a human. She takes it very personally when she gets attacked in a game. I'm going to try to get her to play the zombie side before I give up on this one. I'm hoping that playing a horde will alleviate the issue of taking it personally.

I notice "taking it personally" to be more common among women than men, but, of course, that may be because of SO-biased. Why is it that women apparently take gaming more personal then men do? Or do men just hide it better?

I think it's because (some) women are not able to seperate out an attack in a game and a personal attack. :-)

When we need a breather from Ticket to Ride, Transamerica, or Scrabble, we pull out Downfall of Pompeii. The rules are pretty easy, it plays well with just two players, and it's lively and moves quickly, with some tension (but not too much) and strategy.

I borrowed this from the CABS closet in November and played it with my wife and daughter (she's 15 and becoming a good gamer in her own right). My wife has promised this will be joining our collection very soon. I'd say that's a successful play...

With just two rules, quick action across the U.S. or Europe map (Europe map is in the Transeuropa edition), and a playing time of 10 minutes, my wife and I enjoy playing this one a lot.

An ideal afternoon is knocking work off early and playing this with my wife before dinner. We also like to take this to the local pub and play there while enjoying a bottle of wine or pitcher of beer (or both!).

I'm glad you brought this one up, Michael. My wife and I love this one as well.

What's really interesting is that whenever we try other two-player games, we generally play to win, and not for the other to lose.

Not so with Scrabble! Put that bag of tiles between us and the competition is downright vicious. I refuse to let her get near a Triple Word Score, unless the only word she can make is on or in

So, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to introduce her to Race before San Juan. And maybe it wasn't such a good idea to do it when she's mostly played Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, and other traditional wife-games. But I did it. And she hated it.

First, she thought it was just her first play, so she didn't know the rules (was right).
Then, she thought it was too late, and she was too tired to concentrate (right again, as always!)

Then, she played it during the day and decided that it was absolutely terrible, and that it ended just as things were getting going.

So after 4 plays, she decided she would never play it with me again. But, I didn't shut up about it, and after 5 plays, she asks to play again.

So, at the present time, it's a success!

I taught this to my wife last night. She actually asked to play it after viewing a video review:

It was almost a disaster, however. She played Jack first and hated it, claiming that it was too "thinky". To my surprise, she asked to play another game as the detective and loved it! After winning , her comment was, "I think I can be a kick-ass detective."

We'll see if she asks to play again, but I have high hopes.

We had the opposite experience. She hated playing the detective claiming it was too much like "Clue", so we're going to try it with her playing Jack. We'll see if she likes it. I'm borrowing it, so her liking it will determine if I buy it. I may anyways because it's a kick ass game if you have two people who like it.

I can only comment on Kahuna and I've got to say that even for my tastes it gets a bit too much of a brain-burner. At some stage in the game you really have to go over so many possibilities that it get's frustrating really. Friends whom I've played this with agree that it's a bit too much of a brainbuster for such a short game.
I'd never consider pulling this out for my girlfriend.

We played this without the tactics cards and although a little lukewarm I think I could get her to play again. :-)

Update: I ended up buying Schotten Totten because I figured she'd enjoy it more than Battle Line just due to the themese. Have yet to get it on the table though.

I'd like to add to the list, but I don't think I've played any games with your wife.

I think we're odd couple out, judging from how many lists I read like this. I'm the games procuress and, often, taster, but I got into Eurogames looking for things we (husband, daughter, and I) could do together and spouse and child have been with me every step of the way, both individually and collectively. Each of us has different preferences, but there's lots of overlap. Basically, they'll try anything I suggest and enjoy most of it.

Biggest difference among us wrt gaming is how many times in a row (or over the course of a relatively brief period of time) are you willing to play the same game and how late on a school/worknight are you willing to start a new game? On both of those dimensions, I tend to be the wettest blanket.

Jeff, I'd like a better idea of what your wife does and does not like about a particular game. Not being a heavy Eurogamer myself, I'm curious if the gateway Eurogames work better with her or not.

Good luck!
