The past few years have seen the fast spread of iPhones, iTouch and their users worldwide (80+ countries.) They are both portable internet interfaces and computers, enabling their users to access BGG from virtually anywhere they have a wireless phone or wifi connection. Now join the iPad users as well!

With the coming of the iPhone and iPad also came a surge of gaming opportunities. First with online web apps and now with an SDK to allow true app development, its internet interface allows a wide variety of gaming opportunities.

This list is also dedicated to encouraging new development of future games, hopefully of the multi-player networked variety. What will not be included are apps which require breaking ("jailbreaking") of iPhones.

What I would like to see: More board game implementations, especially Euros. Now that Germany, France and the UK are getting iDevices, I'm hoping we won't have to wait too much longer. Above all, less 1-player games and more multi-player network games. (I thinking of live and move-by-move gameplay with my friends in other parts of the world.)

Since there are hundreds of thousands of iPhone apps in the AppStore (and who knows how many webapps), this is by no means an attempt to document them all - just a mention or tip of the hat to the cream of the crop and the rare solo attempts.

If you didn't brick up your iPhone on the last firmware update... if your game table is an iPhone... sit back and enjoy a few board games. Please feel free to add the ones I've missed, comment on ones I've listed and, in general, push the field of mobile gaming forward in a positive manner.

As of the moment that I type this (early December 2011), this app is stil not available on iTunes.

That said, "Roll Through the Ages" is available for the iphone/ipod touch. (not sure if it's already listed further down on this list - if not, I'll add it.)

Cheers!
JerBear

Edit - Yep, it's item #41 on this list. Interesting discussion there - no AI, but it does have solo mode.

Dominion Kingdom Deck

Free app to randomize your Kingdom sets. You can choose which sets and promo cards to include. Swipe to get rid of a card, check it off when you pull it out of the box, save lists, you can sort cards by cost or set or both, you can set it to require reaction for attack and require cards with costs 2 - 5. Lots of options, works great and it's free.

I just checked and it shows up as 99 cents. No biggie. Looks like a good app. Same as the free one really, but it seems like the free one has a couple more features. They both offer the same sorting, but the free one allows you to save lists, set requirements and check off the cards you've pulled out of the box. Why pay a buck when you get even more for free?

I know it's been said, but this is more of a board game 'tool' rather than any kind of game. If you ain't got the cards, you got no game.

Only play with AI.

Here're some icon that instead original game.
- CrossSword = Power = Money
- A Card = Action
- Horn = Draft Counter = Buy

Game includes Normal mode(Play with 3 AI) and Campaign Mode.

Now they say game include 27 card.
I'm not sure if it mean 27 kingdom cards or 3 VP cards, 3 Golds Cards, 1 Curse Cards and 20 Kingdom cards.

Go ahead... keep excusing the behavior. shake

Like I said, you'd feel differently if you were the designer or publisher.

I wasn't excusing the behavior, just clarifying the issue. There is no theft here. There may be copyright or trademark infringement, but not theft. I am neither the designer nor publisher, but I am a software developer and I have no problem with calling things by their correct terms.

Personally, my feelings are thus: If there was an official Dominion app already, the issue would be moot as BoG would clearly be infringing on it. However, where the designer/publisher of a game has been unable or unwilling to provide an official app, I have no compunction against another developer stepping up to the plate and establishing the market, even if it is by means of a blatant clone.

Greg

I don't like the ideas of clones but I agree on the point Greg is making. So here's my 2 cents and some additional questions/discussion points.

First of all shouldn't we ask to put this discussion somewhere else?

My 2 cents.

If there was an official app i would have had more problems with the clone.
Since there isn't people might start talking about the app and find out about Dominion. Increasing the value of "dominion".

Second question
This app cloning of boardgames is relatively new. So I wonder if boardgame publishers can stop this cloning by adding some extra sentences to the rulebook.

Another two cents
When i think about theft i think of sites where you can print your own decks of cardgames.

Last questions
And can someone explain me sites where you can play boardgames without even owning them? Are the games made available by the publisher? and what if a game has different publishers??? Isn't one publisher by making it available on such sites "stealing" from the other publisher.
If not wouldn't you say than that this blatant clone of Dominion is doing the same for Dominion?

In the interest of clarifying the issue, I note that copyright and trademark infringement have relatively narrow legal definitions, and as yet no one has alleged that BoG has infringed either. "Theft" or "steal" may have narrow legal definitions, but also a common usage definition. There's no question that BoG is using Dominion's mechanics, completely unchanged, and many people think that "theft" is an appropriate word for it.

When "steal an idea" conveys a clear meaning, then the proposition that you *can't* steal an idea is setting a technical definition against common usage.

I don't think it's pertinent that nobody has alleged infringement, since that does seem to be what they are implying through their incorrect word choice. And just to be pedantic, I don't think even the common usage of the terms stealing and theft can be applied to immaterial objects since they imply depriving the rightful owner of the item(s) in question.

I think of it this way:
There are dozens of board game apps out there. I don't own all of them. I'd rather purchase an official app for some other board game than purchase a clone. I enjoy Dominion, and would love to have it on my iPod, but I enjoy other games too.
If I buy a licensed game, my money is going to the game programmers as well as the game designer. If I buy a clone, game designers are not getting any of my money. The designer of Dominion may not be getting my money in either case, but at least some designer is.
For those who say "If there was an official app, I would buy it, but since there isn't I bought this." Don't you think the existence of BoG would be a deterrent for any app developer looking for board game licenses to develop? How hard would it be to sell a $4-$5 official app when there is already a $2 clone in the app store.

No, why should it be a deterrent? The market is here, buyers eagerly waiting for the real thing.

Tineren wrote:

Not hard at all. The "clone" has different theme and no mention of Dominion anywhere in their description. It also has a limited number of cards, but a great original(?) idea of nice puzzle scenarios in campaign mode.
The official Dominion would have (hopefully) huge amount of cards with original art and familiar terms, all expansions available as in-app-purchase going by their real names and a 100% tie-in with the board games we love. Why would a fan of Dominion NOT buy the official product? And the makers of Dominion app would do well to copy the scenario idea from BoG, it is really a fun solitaire mode.

I think there is a bit of overreacting here, as IMHO the so-called clones are not much of a threat to official app. Copying the game mechanics just proves that the designers of Dominion have done great work (as if we didn't know it already). I guess the creators of BoG could have gone a lot further if they were seriously trying to cash on Dominion's success.

(Just to clarify, I don't know any iOS app designers and have no connection to creators of "clone" apps like BoG, Viking Lords or whatever.)

Graphically Carcassonne surpasses Medici (Small World was designed for iPad only), but the gameplay of both games are implemented equally well. Also, graphically, Medici is not ugly in any way...I think Carcassonne has the best graphics of any board game on iphone/itouch, but Medici is on par with Samurai and a few others and surpasses many of the other Knizia games. Within 3 weeks of release, Medici has been updated and the bugs have, seemingly, been completely fixed.

Personally, I'm excited about a company that A) clearly has an interest in developing games for iphone/itouch that we would all be interested in; B) has already produced an excellent implementation of a board game; and, C) followed up their release with an update in a timely manner.

Would I like to see better graphics? Of course! But, in no way am I upset that Codito is developing these games.

I'm excited, too. I agree with what you're saying about Medici (which is a notoriously ugly boardgame anyway). I'm glad Codito put out the fix quickly.

Here is where I think Codito needs improvement:

1. Test their apps more thoroughly prior to release. Releasing an app with some minor bugs is one thing, I know it's impossible to hit every scenario when dealing with AI for a decent strategy game. But multiple crashes and freezes in various situations on various platforms is unacceptable. The fact that their app was released as buggy as it was and keeping in mind the severity of those bugs (crashes, freezes) it shows they didn't test the app thoroughly enough prior to release. Maybe they need more beta-testers, but something should change there if they want to be viewed as a professional development organization.

2. Communicate with their customers more effectively. Once customers started reporting crashes, freezes and other bugs, they should've responded to the customers immediately and provided updates during the fix and patch release stages. It's a simple and quick thing they can do to help their customers feel at ease knowing they're aware of the issues and working on them. It builds confidence in their brand.

Other than those things, I see huge potential with Codito. They obviously have a love for great strategy games. They're working to bring games we love to this platform. They're obviously talented at what they do. If they address these two issues, they'll probably be very successful.

Codito has a response here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/5448265#5448265

It sounds like they really don't have a broad enough base of beta-testers with different hardware configurations. But it also sounds like they're at least actively working on the problems.

Thanks. Someone else pointed me to that thread earlier when I brought this up. It's good that they responded there, but that's not really a centralized location where all of their customers can get feedback from them. I think it's great that they're communicating with the BGG community, but at the very least, they should communicate at their own website and it would really be great if they put those communications up on their facebook and twitter accounts too.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.. Not only a wonderful multiplayer online game, but iPhonable too. Why bother getting up in the morning to make my move from my computer when I can do it on my iPhone from bed?
Special thanks to the Scotts.. Starkey and Alden! Also Brian Mullin for the Nile variant. (Did I miss anybody?)

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/tigris/

I'm sure the other BGG online games work as well, but have yet to test them.

Codito's geeklist has this app with an estimated release date of August, 2011. I'd recommend subscribing to it for updates, especially if you are interested in any of the other games they are developing.

I've had a chance to play it a bunch and it's a pretty good little app.

They provide a full set of Crokinole rules but need to provide some more help with the mechanics of how to shoot in this implementation, but it's been fun.

It supports single player, and multi-player both locally (handing the phone back and forth) and via internet (edit: Tried this a couple times, got disconnected mid-game both times).

EDIT: It's updated to include a spring-shot option that makes it much more playable on the phone. It really is an addictive game.

Ok, but otherwise the program is fantastic. And I haven't seen something like that with the new version yet.

Steve, I have a question about multiplayer. A buddy and I like to play against each other, each with a computer partner. Do both devices need to have all players set to the same AI difficulty to ensure we're getting equally skilled partners? If not, how does the game determine the skill settings of the computer players when multiple devices are being used?

When a link is setup, a new collection of settings is created that only applies to linked games. One of the two devices is chosen as "host" and the host acts as the initial seed for the settings but the settings are shared across all devices that are participating in the link. If you go to the settings menu once you're linked, you can see what they are and if you change them there, you're changing them for everyone in the game.

I might revise that a little bit for the Game Center implementation but for Bluetooth, where everyone is in the same room, I thought that way worked best.

Just found it by accident..

It's 2,39€ / 3,11$(?). German reviewers give 4/5 stars at an average.
Pros:
- nice graphics
- adjustable AI
- the thing we've all been waiting for

Cons:
- sometimes slow AI
- no sounds
- no hotseat/multiplayer
- quote from a review: "sometimes your partner plays strange - but that just feels close to reality"

Here's the AppStore link.

lol, I noticed that - but forgot about it.
It came up after a few games: "Do you want to rate this app"? Options: "No" and "Nein" .
Reminds me of a problem a friend of mine had w/ his mobile: every time he connected to his PC, there was a dialogue box: "System error." Choices: "Yes" or "No"

Anyway, do you know when the german translation of 1.2 hits the appstore?

Same time as the English one... Whenever Apple gets around to approving it. It was submitted Wednesday. At this point all we can do is wait.

Stones is a full iPhone implementation of Go (only player vs. player on the same phone) with support for handicaps, 9x9, 13x13 or 19x19 boards, and multiple scoring systems.

Edit: I had the player options exactly backwards -- no computer opponents are available)

Thanks Aaron. I must confess though that I caved and bought the Pro version for the extra bit of cash.

Still really happy with the purchase though, lots of content and like you I'm still working my way through the tutorial. My friend was over on the weekend and brought his board game over so we had a couple games.

Unfortunately by the time I actually get to play the game it probably will have already dropped on the App Store. I didn't purchase it until this morning when I got up and I'm at work. I won't be able to play at least until my lunch in another couple hours.

No asynchronous at all? As in, the only multiplayer is playing a whole game in one sitting? That seems really dumb to me.

Agreed. In addition, I don't really understand the strategy to develop this app in secret. A big part of being successful in the app store is making a big initial splash, and it really helps to create some buzz, especially when you have a property with a lot of name recognition like Ticket to Ride. They should have been communicating with the board game and iPad community all along on this.

They would do well to start communicating now about plans for future updates. Are they planning on adding asynchronous gameplay? Personally I have no plans to pick this one up without an asynchronous mode.

I tried for a month to start a game. Never could and finally deleted it.

Trouble was, the initial app install was broken and it took them awhile to fix. In the interim, I guess everyone just got fed up and deleted it.

Well one of the things I really like more with Carcassonne is the AI since you can play against a number of different AI characters each with their own unique playing style. In Samurai the AI always plays the same and they are often really predictable. If they get a special tile such as the figure swap tile or the tile exchange token they use them almost immediately.

If you are new to the game you just need to develop a good strategy. You need to make sure you balance out the use of your tiles so that you don't focus too much in just one area otherwise the other player or the AI will dominate the other areas of the board and capture the figures. Also always be aware of the end game conditions... the game ends when all pieces of one figure are captured or when 4 figures are set aside as a tie. Sometimes you can wrap a game up quickly just by meeting these conditions securing a win or at least a draw. I played an online game against a friend and we were pretty much completely tied with captures throughout the entire game, at one point there was only one peasant left with a number of other figures remaining. He could have easily captured it with one of his few remaining tiles but he focused on the other figures thinking I wouldn't be able to claim them on my later moves however, since I was able to claim the peasant there would be no need for any further moves as the game would automatically end. Had he been aware that the game would end once that peasant was captured he could have played one of his tiles to capture this figure and the game would have ended in a draw but he ended up losing the game.

Aside from that once you play the AI a bit you will get use to them. The last two games I had against the AI I captured the figure majority for all 3 figures. One of the games I scored 3 figure majorities and I managed to get 10 total captures while the AI only got 3. Of course luck is also a factor in the game and sometimes it can be hard to recover if luck is just not on your side.

AH! Here we go. No, not a full implementation of Catan, but just a Catan dice roller. Still, this is exactly the sort of game play accessory I've been putting thoughts towards and is certainly worthy of note. "Random number generator is seeded with milliseconds since epoch before each and every roll of the dice."

Actually sounds like a rethemed variant of Catan -- the reviews say there is no dice rolling, and there's a new rule where you can take over someone else's hex. But some people still like it.

"We don't have many details yet, but from the looks of it, it's going to be a DLC expansion pack for the original Catan."

Thanks, either I read it incorrectly or they edited the article. When questioned the devs indicated to me that it would be DLC.

Has anyone had any success in moving their internet account to a new device? I enter my nickname; it says it's taken; I click on the "That's Me!" button; it asks whether it's mine; I click the "Send Email" button which is supposed to send a link to allow me to play on the new device. But I never receive the email. I tried emailing the folks at carcassonneapp.com, but never heard back.

Has this worked for anyone?

It's possible it's the overly aggressive spam filters that AT&T/Yahoo use (upstream of me). I never get any spam, but maybe I'm missing some legit emails too.

My eyes — my e-y-e-s!

Why can't the the owners of these games find competent developers to license them to. Are we never going to see something at the level of Carcassonne or Small World? Come on guys, at least make sure one of the kids on the team has some talent as a graphic designer or artist. Hell, there are people here on BGG whose PnP work looks better than this (or the majority of iOS implementations)!

They just updated this app to increase the "intelligence" of the AI on both levels. Can't say definitively how much better it is, but my one play against it seemed to suggest that it played much better...and beat me for the first time in a long time.

EDIT: I do not claim to be an expert player, but I will say that the update has significantly improved the AI. Every game I've played since the update has been tense and come down to the wire (no more easy wins), and my win rate is probably less than 50% right now...

It's a clone, under the name "McGuire," but I really like the clean interface and for 99 cents you can't go wrong.

I haven't figured out if there is a way to change the player count (only four player games as far as I can tell), and it's one player against AI, but I still recommend it. It has game center integration, which is always nice.

Looks interesting! I used to play AckWire (another clone) on Palm OS all the time, so it's nice to have a similar option on my iPhone. (Though that one, unlike McGuire, didn't let you choose which of two equally-large companies would survive a merger.)

Haven't finished a full game yet, but I already have a significant gripe with the game. As it turns out, my issue is exactly the reason why I haven't finished a game.

If you switch to a different app your current game is NOT saved - at least not on my 1st gen iTouch running iOS 3.1.3. I know there's already a debate in the Kingdoms entry regarding app pricing, but even a $0.99 app should remember where you left off.

Aside from that, the interface is clean and functional. I can't speak for the AI strength as I'd never played the game prior to this (and am still pretty lost).

I have the 4th gen Touch and it works fine with multitasking, so I can leave the app and go back to it without losing my progress.

Regarding the AI, I can't help but think that this game sort of "cheats" on AI and uses the information about what tiles you have to determine what tiles the computer will lay down. In my first 4 games, I never was able to found a new company because whenever I drew a tile that was going to let me do it, the computer would always place a tile forming the company before it got around to me. It could just be that I was unlucky though, but not being able to found a company in 4 games is a little strange.

That said, I like the app so far and I feel that it plays pretty well. The fact that it is $.99 is a nice bonus too.

Yeah, the open feint multiplayer that Codito has chosen to use is really limited. Their UI has never impressed me either, which doesn't help.

Edit: I say that I do think this is worth picking up. Definitely worth $5 to play Tikal versus the computer (even if it seems pretty easy to win right now), but I do hope they get better at these the more they make. (And go back to update the previous ones.)

Been playing this a lot -- makes me feel good about my ability at Tikal right now - I can beat several King rated opponents. Is the multiplayer asynchronous, or do you have to play it real-time?

The iPhone version is called Hanto. Good production quality, with adjustable AI opponent and hotseat two-player. Can't add link at the moment as I'm writing this on the phone.

EDIT:
It looks like the game was made without consent of the designer of Hive. The app seems to have been removed from the app store.

There was a note on the iOS boardgames blog that Hive was getting a re-release. It's possible iOS5 broke it, several other apps have vanished whilst people take them down and fix them with no publicity whatsoever until they mystically reappear (Looking at you Wabash Cannonball)

But in the case of Hive, it doesn't sound like there will be a mysterious reappearance. They are promising a new Hive game, but if that materializes, it will be a completely separate purchase. Those of us who purchased the original $5 app better make backups, because if you lose your local copy in your iTunes database, it's gone for good.

It's coming back in a week or so, and will be free for the first week so as long as you're on your toes you can replace a lost copy for nothing.

will the bug fix release include the removal of the "tap here to buy expansions" banner once expansions are purchased? and dare I say, will you include a new expansion?

Sure. The banner will go away once you bought all expansions. This update will not include any new content, just bugfixes. But don't worry - we plan to support NSHex for a log time, so online multiplayer and new armies will come in the next updates after this one.

It's not just for board games, but the appshopper app tracks prices and free apps - and has saved me literally hundreds of dollars on games.

For board game related app news and reviews, subscribe to the iOS blog here on the geek, it's awesome.

I just use this (and another geeklist) to be alerted when games are released, then I add them to my AppShopper wish list and wait for the price drop. :-D

two iphone queries, one on topic, one off

what sites are good for game ratings, the ones Im googling seem to have hundreds of games listed but none mention any of "our" BGG games, there must be a site like the ipad one that rates games that might be a bit more in line with the stuff here

also, does anyone know what the "nonewsisgoodnews" app comes under, I cant find it when i search the appstore on the phone.
