Aldie, you probably already know this, but boardgamegeek.com rocks.
You have managed to pull this community together in a way that is revolutionizing both Boardgaming as a hobby and how gamers connect with one another. Not only has this site galvanized gaming as a legitimate passion (with that indescribable "oh cool, I'm not the only one" feeling first-timers experience), but you have also brought together a wide and diverse range of people who are actually INTERESTING in their own right.
So here's my suggestion for you. Take it or leave it as you please, but understand that at the core of this suggestion is a huge compliment. Boardgamegeek's structure and ranking system is unlike anything I've seen on the internet. It's democratic, it's capitalistic, it's fair and it lends itself to intelligent debate, whether the subject is esoteric gaming mechanics or the stupidest videos on YouTube. Have you thought about using this site's core elements in other areas of interest? Now that you have reached the million-man mark, I know you would have an army of loyal followers who would follow you to any related sites with tremendous energy.
Here's hoping I see "Scott Alden" on a Forbe's list some day,

Grant

P.S. Geeks, please feel free to add to this list as you wish.

Imagine BGG themed around movies. Microbadges galore. A national ranking system based on YOUR votes. MovieLists. Categories. Awards.
The possibilities here are limitless, as would be the advertising (imho).

The top movie would be some art flick that only 5 people have seen (including the actors and director). Anyone who complained about that movie would be told that they need to watch it at least 2 or 3 more times so that they can appreciate it's depth and complexity.

Nice idea, but people go to IMDB because it's a great information resource, not because of the humor and "insightful" wit of a handful of its users.

Every time I go to IMDB, which is a lot, I think the exact same thing. It's great, but it would be so unbelievably better if it was more like BGG.

I personally have a difficult time choosing new music. I typically hate all radio stations outside of NPR, and have only discovered recent faves like Sigur Ros and VNV Nation through pure happenstance. How awesome would this site be if it included a subdivision which allowed geeks to vote on their favorite artists/albums/songs/composers/singers/musicians in genres ranging from Classical to Industrial?

One tinsy winsy problem. The RIAA is screwed up it would see it
as a threat and not a way to promote music and the first time someone
uploaded a song to the files section the aldie would be sued till bgg was owned by sony.

This site does rock but there certainly is some content that the orginal copyright owners could object to if they wanted to. But most of the gaming publishers seem to understand that the player aids and even the full computer versions help sell more copies of the game not less.

Really interesting when you scrobble your tracks. Given, user input is limited to a certain extent and pandora is better for finding new music. I've managed to get a good number of friends to join.

A friend of mine is trying to do just this, and went live with his site just recently:

MealMax

It's a similar idea -- it's user-generated content, people can add games restaurants to the DB and earn points for adding content.

It's a great site, but there's just not much there yet. The main problem is getting some initial content -- the starting snowball, if you will, that will encourage more to be added as it gains momentum. It's extra tough since it's city-based, so if I add content for Vancouver that won't really help someone in Denver (due to the nature of the topic).

If there is no starting content, what will encourage people to start adding content? If anyone has suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Reviews, reading reports, BookLists, it's just too much for me to think about for long without feeling like I'm going to pass out from the weight of sheer possibility.

I tried this a few weeks back but was disappointed. When marking a book as read, I don't care about the version of the book, if I'm marking it as owned, then version matters, but all the versions should be collated together, not spread out. Searching right now is a clumsy mess, imo. I got to less than 50 of the books I've read the stopped.

(Also you should be able to click on an author or publisher and see everything connect to them, ala how it works on BGG.)

I've been using http://www.anobii.com/. It tracks the different versions of books, but when browsing through books will let you know when you have a different edition on your shelf. It also lets you click on the author's names for everything in the DB by that author. The site is also international so you aren't limited to English releases.

VGG - Videogamegeek A place to talk geek about all your video game needs... a forum open to gamers from all consoles.

As a Moderator on Sony's Gamer Advisory Panel, I've been promoting BGG's ease of use and open design. Our community used to have something much more like BGG in terms of design and community pride... a redesign a few years back took alot of the feeling away... I'd love to see Aldie's take on a fan-community videogame site.

Most computer and videogame players don't play older games. Videogames don't age as well as boardgames. Changing technology has a bigger impact on their lifecycle.

Why shouldn't they play older games? As in any genre, lots of crap is released all the time, but the best games should survive longer, even if the technology becomes outdated. After years of buying console after console, being assured that each successive incarnation is the end-all, I have all but given up on video games. We here at BGG complain of the "cult of the new", but in video games it's a full-blown state-sponsored religion. Some of the control has got to shift away from the corporation toward the community in order for my faith in the genre to be restored.

The "new is better" phenomenon applies to almost all aspects of capitalistic society, I think. Your car is 10 years old? Better get a new one. The graphics on that game are crappy, play this new one instead! DVD looks okay, but HD-DVD looks even better, so buy our new media player! Your computer only has 1 gig of RAM and a 1.5Ghz processor? It's time to upgrade!

Me? I still play NES games regularly, and I've also played Portal. I think the best RTS game ever made came out 10 years ago. Wii is a lot of fun, and so is Super Bomberman on the SNES.

The single feature on the Wii that had most weight when I was thinking of getting it, was the fact that you can play a lot of old games with a controller that resembles the old ones (and even the opportunity to play leftover games of Game Cube). I don't have enough money to buy all the consoles I got rid of during my adolescence, but playing Super Metroid, Mario Bros 3 or TNMT on the Wii is as fun (and challenging) as playing Mario Galaxy or the newer games for Xbox or PS(insert number)

Also, apparently boardgames don't "age as well" for the community: Always the newest game is praised as "the ultimate" and "the best" game in it's genre (read: Agricola, Pandemic, Through the Ages, Starcraft..)

Edit: In no way I'm trying to attack you or your post, I'm just completing my thoughts about videogames...

www. adultdvdtalk.com has a pretty good site with a lot of useful features... but even there I could see the BGG "engine" being applied to good effect.

...but could you imagine the fuss that would surround the whole User Submission/GeekMod system? Ouch... some hurt pride there... and well, there's only a few solo variants... god, I better end this post before I get any worse...

Unfortunately, the name is already taken by some hack that has his personal picture collection on the net.

There is a huge group of people on the net that go to get info on amusement parks and roller coasters. I've often been tempted to ask Aldie for permission to use his format for a coaster site like this site.

Site is taken but currently inactive (no posts since Aug 2007).

ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com are both okay, but they lack the BGG charm, openness, and accessibility.

Besides, I can't wait to start a split in the community over Euro vs. Ameribeer. devil

I feel sorry for you, as you must be one of those people who have never tasted a great belgian beer.

Just try them and you will see the light.

There are only 2 kind of people in the world: those who have tasted belgian beer and are now in love with it, and those who will soon fall in love with it.

Best regards from belgium

Well, admittedly I don't recall trying a Belgian beer. I've had Dutch, is that close enough?

Cars are a complex hobby. With all the stuff you can do to a car, all the different models of car, with variations in engine, transmission, etc, a user generated DB of automotive knowledge would be ideal.

EDIT: Apparently Autogeek.com exists, but I'm not sure how analagous it is.

Part of the charm of the BGG is our ability to continually converse intelligently about new and old board games. Part of this is due to the passionate people who come here EVERYDAY to interact respectfully and part of it is due to our wonderful sense of humor (pats ourselves on the back).

I bet something similar could be replicated for book lovers. This would be the easiest cross-over in my opinion.

I think it could also be replicated for music and film, as long as there was a way to keep people from starting silly flame wars. To begin with, I think music and film would have to be divided into several genres. But it would be more difficult since a lot of young people have their egos entangled in the type of music they listen to. The conversations could easily turn into silly posturing.

Anyhow, I love the idea of replicating the model in places where it would work. There is obviously great value in what Aldie has done.

Here's a thought...open the new site(s) to BGG members exclusively at first, so as to separate the wheat from the chaff. Then you could make it invitation only (similar to gmail's early days) before incorporating some means of allowing members to police themselves democratically. So the anticipated numbers of idiots pouring in could be cut back via thumbs, flags, molotov's, etc.

Oh yea! For sure! BGG members are so much more humble and mature than those of other forums and and threads here never erupt into flame wars like they do elsewhere on the internet. We need to keep out the ignorant and arrogant elitists from any new site that Aldie and Derk might come up with!

I've never understood comments like that, even tho I realize it's inevitable. The truth is, of all the forums I've ever participated in, the 'Geek does have some of the best damn members I've ever seen. Call it what you will (and I'm not even talkin' about the point that inspired this retort), I think the 'Geek's the best place on the 'net. Period.

And comments like that serve absolutely nothing...

It's like sayin', "I hate when I take this hammer and smash my thumb with it!" I say, quit usin' the hammer, boy! If the site is horrible, so terrible, then why do you feel it necessary to log in and constantly complain about it? Doesn't that just make everyone involved more miserable?
