I want to get into war games but shes doesn't. I hope she will like economic/trading/city building games. She catches on pretty quick to most things and as long as I'm not to competitive and try not to win at first I think I can make her a gamer.

I just received Jambo and San Juan which we have not played yet. Need lighter games maybe, but I will report back. The list is roughly in the order of what I think we can BOTH enjoy, with her opinion being the most important.

Thank you to everyone that has posted their suggestions. We played our first game of Jambo today and we both really liked it. I won barely, but was really surprised how my girlfriend picked up the strategy of using the different card types. I really like it because i am a Business Marketing major and its a game that utilizes trading and selling. I give it a 8.

Keep the comments coming.

Although often praised here on BGG, this one is just too simplistic for me. I've played it perhaps 4-6 times and won every single game. I much prefer Balloon Cup - you might take a look at that one.

I think Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper and/or Mystery Rummy: Jekyll & Hyde are better choices for playing just 2. Jack the Ripper is nice because it scales well for more players whereas Jekyll and Hyde only plays 2.

If you are only playing with 2, think about Carcassonne: The Castle. If you are playing with more, then Carcassonne is a good choice (though, you'll probably want to add Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals and Carcassonne: Traders & Builders right away. There are many, many other expansions, but those first two are all you really need.

I love Carcassonne for all it has done for me! It was the game I used to introduce my gf to boardgames and she loved it.

The expansions has really helped her in being able to enjoy gaming. The rules in the base game is amazingly easy or just easy enough for a first time gamer. And after a few plays you introduce an expansion with a few new additions and this way she realised that rules aren't that complex at all. It's just a matter of seeing the system behind it.

And with all the expansions the playtime expands just as much. It went from a 30 min game to lasting several hours and she actually loved it even more. She has gradually warmed up to games that might play for 4+ hours which previously was way out the question. Soon we are going to give Arkham Horror another try, she's actually been asking about it and one day we might even be able to retry Axis & Allies. More geeky wargames will probably have to wait another 10-15 years though... devil

You might want to try Mystery Rummy: Al Capone or Mystery Rummy: Jekyll and Hyde instead. I think they're better with two players. Also, some people are turned off by the Ripper theme and artwork.

The military theme might be a downside (given her aversion to wargames) but the gameplay is fairly abstract so it hopefully won't feel too much like a wargame. On the plus side, the rules are simple and the gameplay is very quick so it's pretty painless to try out.

Another great game! Has a bit of a quirky mechanice wherein you can't sort the cards in your hand. But if you get past that (and it only takes a few reminders), this game is terrific. Funny, wild - trading game essence. Good for a party atmosphere and supports a large number of players well.

Didn't get this one. You will find lots of supporters for this one. I am just not one of them.

Seems simplistic to me. See the Lost Cities comments, above. Get beans, trade beans. More often than not you are moving beans regardless of who they are going to, or who they are coming from. Everyone does this for a while and eventually someone is declared the winner.

Meh.

Very good game. I agree, the 2 player version is a different feel (like in Bohnanza). For some reason, I find the game drags in the middle. I actually prefer Mission: Red Planet which takes the role selection from Citadels and adds some El Grande elements (esp. area control). Like I said, I prefer Mission: Red Planet, but I don't know the game well enough to go around recommending it.

I think the two player game is probably one of the blandest games ever. Then again I think I really don't enjoy the game that much. Is fun with a larger group.....but I think the buildings don't do much....which makes it generally a role selection game with the occasional special ability from a building. Two thumbs down...esp for the two player game.

That's exactly it. I'll kick you, you kick me, repeat. It can go on and on and on too. It doesn't feel like it naturally winds it's way down to a conclusion... like when you almost complete Chutes and Ladders and land on a slide

There are plenty of games that have a general feeling of building up your own development, yet still allow for some confrontation and interactions (Jambo comes to mind).

I like this one a lot. I feel it works quite well with two players, as there is just one opponent turn between your own turns - so you can work on optimizing your current turn and still plan for a longer term strategy. That second part fades more as you get into 3 and 4 players.

Held my wife's interest for several games, then wore off.

I have this one available for trade.

We just got this one.

It seems pretty light, but there is a game there. Plays fast, my wife likes the theme (birds).

Compare this to say a heavier game, Hive, but with a theme not so good with the wife (bugs).

This is the game that my wife always wants to play. In fact, it's taken her whole family by storm. We often take the two player travel edition on trips. Plays great with 2 and scales to 4 players well. I'm not usually a fan of abstract games, but I really like this one.

I think you would find this one fun to play given the ones that you do like.

Caeser and Cleopatra is terrific. That was one of the first 2-player that Bianca and I really loved. Simple rules, but there's a lot of tension with the random draw of the politicians. Very fun for 2-players.

If you get Carc, get the base game. Not the Castle, not Hunters, not the Discovery. Just plain old Carc.

We've most enjoyed (in no particular order):

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers
San Juan
Mr. Jack (great couples game)
Ticket to Ride: Marklin Edition
Goa (she destroys me in this game)
Lost Cities (another great couples game)

I'll tell you my main recommendations:

1. Carcassonne - always get requested and can be mean and nice all at once

2. Hera and Zeus - quite a good 2 player game of bluffing, and is almost a war game (....not really it plays similarly to stratego)

3. Quarto - An awesome abstract, plays fast and has that one more game feeling

4. Reef Encounter - Pretty deep and strategic game....I always lose, but yeah quite fun

5. Katzenjammer Blues - Quite possibly the best 2 player auction game I have played. Only play with smaller amounts of players (3 max lol), but is great for those numbers.

6. Settlers of Catan Card Game - One of my favorite 2 player games. May play similar to jambo...so maybe not such a good choice yet.

Not so good recommendations:

1. Citadels - So bland....plays pretty quickly....but needs like 4 or more players to be decent

2. Notre Dame - Is ok....but is very deterministic.....not really sure why this gets so many 2 player nods. It's ok, but plays much better with 3 or 4
players.

3. Alhambra - Pretty fun marketplace/set collecting game for 3 or 4 players. Now with 2 we get the lame extra player, and everything seems so bland. Still plays ok though.
