I'm getting married at the end of July and will move into her place a few miles away. The tragedy of this is I will no longer be within walking distance of the beer garden*. Those of you who moused over my flag, saw "Astoria" and made the connection to "beer garden" are nodding knowingly.

Sometime between our civil ceremony 7/18 and reception 7/26, I will enjoy stumbling home four blocks from the beer garden for the last time. I'm thinking of making a meetup out of this should the weather hold up, so here's a list of games I think would be appropriate in such a setting as well as the obligatory invitation for suggestions.

*There's also the fact that there's no room in her bathroom for a magazine rack, but I'll save that one for another day.

I knew the beer garden was my kind of place when we set up Scrabble next to some folks playing Risk. I would like to have one more game for the nostalgia. Believe me, Scrabble, kielbasa and a pitcher of Spaten is a dynamite combination.

I bought this game based on the idea of playing it in the beer garden. Every time someone says "that's so meta!", chug your beer.

Wind could be a problem, but as I understand it, replacing the money with poker chips is effective.

One of the draws of the beer garden is all the neighborhood folks it brings in. During the World Cup last year, they had big screen televisions set up all around the perimeter of the garden. No matter who was playing, there were at least 500 supporters of that team in attendence. The comraderie was impeccable no matter who was playing. I once found myself sitting at a table with three elderly gents and a German photographer. After the day's matches were over, we remained and talked away over a few pitchers as if we knew each other for years.

I've only played Loopin' Louie once, but I can see how awesome this game would be over a few pints. Plus, it's sure to attract some attention and I wouldn't be against inviting a stranger over to play. That's what the beer garden's all about.

I can't think of many games that are as bar proof as this one: the pieces are heavy, durable, and not prone to rolling if dropped. The only thing that keeps hive from being the perfect bar game is the black pieces if played in low lighting. Not a problem for an outdoor venue.

Beer garden story that has nothing to do with anything: I love watching the looks on people's faces when they order the dumplings and see what they are. Beer garden dumplings are nothing more than white bread, crusts cut off and steamed. I'm not joking here. Next time, if you want Czech dumplings, try ordering the perogies.

I firmly believe the right mix of alcohol and profanity will make this already fun game epic.
