Approximately 99% of all wargames were conceived to be played by two players. And anecdotally, I think it's safe to say that most 2-player wargames are played solitaire.

I wanted to start this geeklist to try to find wargames for 3 people.

Please add any you know of that play WELL with three people.

This game works well for three people, though Friedrich's only winning options are a) early conquering of Austria, or b) playing defensively and waiting for all the death cards to come out soon after Turn 6.

We have tried playing defensive with Friedrich every time we played it, but to no avail. I have only played it with 3 about 5 times now, but I think Friedrich's job maybe gets a little easier if you play with 4 players? Since the 2 allies don't want the third one to win too easily.

With experienced players, my buddies and I have found that you really need 4 players for Prussia to have an even chance. With 3 or less, the allies are too coordinanted and Prussia has difficulty winning.

This is a chronically undervalued game. It's short, simple and yet both strategically and historically satisfying and it plays with up to four and it's dead cheap to buy! It ought to be on the shelves of any gamer with even a passing interest in historical games.

Ditto on it's gaming value. 3 hours max for a great game.

We lost interest for a while when it bacame too easy for Germans to prevent fall of Berlin in 10 turns. Variant noted in game thread now has some rule adjustments and changes to make it a 12 turn game and its back in our active play list and always right down to the last turn. Berlin has fallen on T 11 a majority of the time or T 12 the rest, T 10 never, and came within a die roll of holding out the whole game once.

One of the best 3's around

Star Wars: Original Trilogy Risk is the single best version of Risk for 3 players. It is one of the best 3 player games ever, with 3 factions: Hutts, Rebels, and Empire. Each having one of 3 distinct victory conditions, respectively: control 13 resource plants, find the base that conceals the Emperor and destroy it, or kill all the rebels. It is a blast to play, and I like it more than the oft praised Black Ops, or new revision.

Agreed. I'm half tempted to get this one for exactly this reason. 'Clone Wars' Risk seems aimed at 2 or 4 players (NOT 3), but, as you say, 'Original Trilogy' is 3 or nothing (really).

You could probably make 3-player Diplomacy work if you use the Intimate Diplomacy variant rules.

"Unlike most variants, this game has been widely played, even having had its own tournament with a cash prize. It is widely acclaimed as far superior to the two player game described in the official rules. It is, however, not suitable for players who are just getting to know Diplomacy, and two people wishing to learn the rules by playing should stick to the official version."

This allows for a good 3-player game that also prevents the leader-bashing syndrome by teaming up 2 people against the third.

The solo player receives a full army, the other players each receive half an army; the solo player also receives twice the normal resources.

Worked beautifully for us.

I haven't played EuroFront but have played EF many times and a few games of Totaler Krieg!, and I think that the Russians would be bored until they enter the war. So theoretically, it's a 3-player game but it's better with two sides. You could have two players playing the Wallies until Barbarossa begins.

Great 3 player game.

Me and my two sons (ages 14 and 12) play this all of the time.

Fast action. Furious.

Only bad thing is that it's easy for two players to gang up on one (i.e. my two sons come after me).

I agree. This is a great game for three.

The hexagonal layout accommodates three perfectly, and the mission cards seem to prevent the two-vs-one dynamic that often plagues three player games.

HIS is designed for six, of course. But the pairing of powers for three is quite natural and the doubling-up would cut a lot of downtime, which is a bit of a problem with six. However, this would probably be best with experienced HIS players, as doubling on powers is going to require much stronger rules knowledge than playing a single power.

I have just finished playing 5 games of this as a 3 player game. It works well. Not much diplomacy but everything else works well. France had a tough time of it BUT since you also control Turkey it balances things out.As said above, there is less downtime than in a 6 players game and everyone gets to run at least one military power.

Many of the big OCS games can be played in various multi-player configurations, but Sicily is really the natural for a 3-way game. One player takes Patton, one takes Monty, and the other takes the Axis. I've never had the opportunity to try this, but it seems perfect for a con - three dedicated players could wrap up the entire campaign in a weekend.

Well, I guess that would depend on your feelings about OCS in general. If you just don't enjoy all the supply handling in the other titles, then this isn't going to change your mind. But if you like the OCS approach, then Sicily is definitely one to have, especially as it's somewhat unique in the system. For one, it's geographically contained, so you get no "edge of the world" issues. Second, more than any other OCS title, it really uses every rule in the book - you've got amphibious landings, offshore naval support, and paradrops along with all the usual land and air action. Put together, the game really makes the Allied player(s) develop a complete and detailed campaign strategy from soup to nuts, whereas the other titles are taking slices of a larger action (very large slices though they may be).

I haven't played the campaign yet, only some of the starter scenarios, and I don't think I really have the time to dedicate to it at the moment. But it's definitely on my list of long-term gaming goals.

Yes you did

At the time I was convinced that GMT's Invasion Sicily was the way to go. And it is a very good game.

Of course, I hadn't thought of a 3 player implementation...until now!

I gotta disagree with this one. 3-player Titan has the classic problem of "A attacks B = win for C." At the very least, C teams up with the winner of the A/B battle to wipe out its loser.

I gotta disagree with the disagreement . I claim that this only happens with unexperienced Titan players, since experienced players will commit to such a battle only if:

a.) The stack is relatively sure to win without too much losses (or the Titan gains
enough points by this battle to be strengthened proportionally to the losses).

b.) The stack is safe enough to build up again before getting into danger.

I played numerous games of 3-player Titan and none of them showed the effect you described above.

In Titan "A attacks B = whoever wins crushes C."

Agreed ... whoever wins in A vs. B gets the set of legion markers and can grow twice as large. Maybe this rule should be relaxed?

One thing I like about Titan's design is that it encourages players to be aggressive and that wallflowers won't accumulate the experience points needed to build their Titan's value.

I was going to suggest this, as one I always remember as being good for 3 players, but I then noticed, in the game entry, that it is actually stated as best with 3. High approval indeed.

In its time considered good enough for Avalon Hill to reprint the original SPI version - and they didn't do that with most of them!

I own this one, although I haven't played it in a looooooong time. It is a game of exploration and conquest of South America, so there is definitely conflict in it.

Not exactly a "wargame" in the sense of a WW2 title like 3rd Reich, but if you love pushing around chits on hexagons, there are far worse games you can play.

Simple answer is that yes it is a wargame if wargamers play it. Damn the treasure hunt, let's purge the French from North America.

Even just setting up colonies involves decimating the local indigenous population. There is a continual need to balance expansion with defence. I guess it could be played cooperatively as a treasure hunt/colonial group-hug picnic by Eurogamers, but play with war gamers and you will be at each other like a bunch of terriers.

It was published in S&T magazine... that makes it a wargame!

All joking aside, when the game was first published, if a game wasn't a "Family" game, or a miniatures game, then it was a "wargame". Today the definition of "wargame" is much murkier and without an agreed upon definition, just about anything that isn't obviously a "Family", "Euro", "AmeriTrash" or "Miniatures" game defaults into the wargame category. Just like in the days of old...

I can't believe no one has posted this one yet! When we get three players, we split up the Allies. So the three players have the choices of Axis, Soviet Allies or Western Allies. We have had a lot of fun playing it this way, as it adds a bit of tension between the two Allied players.

Excellent three player game, if you introduce a fourth player the two Israelis start worrying too much about how to split the air assets. One Israeli, one Egyptian and one Syrian (each loudly calling on the other to renew the attack) is the way to go.

This, Or any of a number of strategic Sci-Fi war games.

Sci-Fi wargames are primed for variable players, specifically because there is no historical "Us vs Them" to constrain them.

My best game of Starfire was actually 1st ed. 3 players, Me playing and serving as GM. 25 strategic turns. 20 very short tactical battles, plus 5 strategic "Get away as they come in" system invasions.

But for the most part I think you're right.
