Well, our marriage wasn't really in trouble but we both, my wife and I, had fallen into our own routines over the past 8 years that,

Every night, after dinner and putting the kids to bed, she would head off to "her" room (the living room) to watch her DVR and I'd head back to "dads" room (the family room to either watch my DVR, play 360, or play guitar. She had little interest in the programming on my DVR and I had little interest in her programs. Occasionally, we would spend time together playing some games on Xbox Live Arcade but most of my 360 time was spent playing First Person Shooters such as Call of Duty.

So, in essence, even though we lived in the same house, we didn't share much "couple" time together. We were the two ships that passed in the night.....until....

....we found a shared love in board gaming. I'm not talking about the stuff we grew up on, I'm talking about those strange German and Euro games I had started reading about on the various Internet forums I was visiting. I started asking around for game suggestions and of course found The Geek early on.

As our collection has grown, so has our marriage. Now we play a game (or two or three) almost every night after we put the kids to bed. The televisions stay off, the 360 gathers dust, we turn on some music, grab a beverage, and spend 3 hours or so laughing, strategizing, teasing, and growing stronger as a couple.

The following list is a snapshot of our journey to a healthy and loving marriage. Each game will be rated in the following manner for Her and Him:

kiss = Love It!
= Like It
Neutral
= Don't Like It
yuk = Hate It!

This was the game that started it all. It came highly recommended. The person that convinced me to buy it admitted that it sounds really boring when described but that it really is a fun game.

We bought it, learned it, and loved it. We spent many a summer night on our patio, music playing, drinks flowing (kids sleeping ), destinations being completed. We've also used TtR to introduce a few of our friends to this type of gaming. We still bring it out on occasion and now also have our 6 year old daughter playing it. It appears to converting from a couples game into a family game. Money well spent.

This is our family game also, not so much couples (I feel the boards too big). However, the Switzerland or Nordic map is smaller and therefore (in my opinion), better for 2 players. More competition.

After playing TtR endlessly for months, we decided to mix things up. I really wanted to try a Catan game but read that the board game was only for 3 or more players. Since we play 2 player 95% of the time, I decided to go with the card game.

The first game we played took forever and there was more thinking and less socializing. This early in our gaming career, the game was actually a turn off. We have it 3 or 4 tries and it never really grabbed us.

This game is up for trade.

Yep, that was our experience too. As much as Settlers is a very interactive game, the card game fails to be interactive. I traded mine off too.

I play it with my wife and even though she doesn't like much of "take that" type of interaction we both enjoy it very much. It became even better with expansion. There is more in this game that is possible to spot in a couple of plays. The whole story in this game is about optimisation and risk management - way more developed than in board version of SoC - where the stress is moved to interaction based on trading and negotiation.

If you get the regular Settlers of Catan and then you get the Traders and Barbarians expansion, there is a 2 player variation included/explained in that expansion. My wife and I have played that 2 player version and really enjoyed it.

I know it's probably cheating, but my wife and I play the original Settlers with just two players all the time. We actually got into it because a friend bought us the Cities & Knights expansion, thinking that it was a stand-alone. Our gaming friends had such busy schedules and we couldn't wait to play it so we borrowed the base game from someone and started playing it with the C & K expansion almost every night for over a month before we every added the "required" third player. Give it a try, it might be worth it. Also, we think that the Cities & Knights expansion really adds to the game with two players so that there is something to play against, the ship.

Looking at your list and the personal likes/dislikes of both you and your wife. You really should have a look at Battle Line, a wonderful two-player game.

Far more tactical than Lost Cities, but with sufficient luck. It has a real, "play the odds" feel to it, and constantly forces you to change tactics mid-course.

My wife craves this game and often kicks my butt. But the balance of play is fairly even.

The original game, Schotten-Totten, might have had a more appealing theme and visual style for your wife (happy Scotsmen vs. warring armies) but I agree that this is a more engaging game than Lost Cities.

I don't like Carcassonne as a two player game. It's a vicious two player battle, the move you make either gets you a number of points or the move you make robs the other player of a number of points. The beauty of the game is that if you play with 4 or more players, that there is a co-operative element. You can build things together, as long as not everybody is involved, because that way it will still give you point on the other player. Sharing a city, road or field is fine. Sharing it will all other players is pointless. Now, towards the end of the game, you will get less co-operative, because you do want to win.

I think this game works best as a 2 player. With any more, the game becomes totally random. I don't think there is any natural incentive to work with another person and so the tactic turns to placing tiles to annoy and block your opponents with the result that no one manages to complete anything other than a 4 or 5 tile city or road.

My gf loves this, but we don't play as much because I started getting other games. I really like the 2-player interaction, and don't feel like we need the other Carcassonne games that are designed for two players (still, I'd like to try The Castle); we are even planning to get expansions, I don't think the extra tiles and rules can break the game for us. The bad thing is that 2-player Carcassonne can become too agressive, and my gf seems to be a very kind person, so I always win (I hope my violen behavior as an Overlord in Descent fixes that).

We figured that since we mainly play 2 player games and we really enjoy Carcassonne, The Castle was a no-brain-er. We had fun with this one but were a little turned off by the restrictiveness of the wall. We prefer the free-flowing feel of the base game.

Huh. I find the wall really opens things up since it generally means there are more places for you to play at the beginning of the game. Also the placement rules are less restrictive in this version (basically you just have to match up the roads).

Yeah, I guess I didn't really think through why I don't really care for this version. Like you said, there are more options when placing a tile. This is not a good thing for my wife whom suffers from a pretty bad case of AP. This really clogs down the game for me. With the original Carc, she only has a limited amount of choices so the game play flows much more smoothly.

6. Board Game: Caylus [Average Rating:7.97 Overall Rank:10]

At this point in our gaming life, we were ready to step it up a level. Enter Caylus. I went to a game store in the suburbs of Chicago called Games Plus and was blown away by the selection. I've read about most of the games they offered but this was really the first time I could see them and touch them. There is something special about browsing around a FLGS for an hour or so just checking out the games and talking to others that share the same hobby.

My choice this day was between Caylus and Puerto Rico. I had heard that Caylus was a better 2 player game so that is what I bought. I excitedly punch and organized all the bits, read the instructions, read them again, and sat down with my wife to play. A few hours later we both felt like we had a bad hang-over. Our heads where throbbing and we walked around like zombies for a few hours.

To put it simply...Too much, too soon!

We've since played it 3 or 4 more times but had to spend so much time in the rule book and less time just enjoying the game. This was our first "heavy" game and probably our last...for a while. I wanted to love it as I really wanted a heavy game in our collection but it just didn't work for us. Plus the dude on the cover of the box really freaked us out! Caylus has been traded.

Back to our comfort zone. With our heads still spinning from the Caylus experience, I thought that Marklin would expand and deepen a game that we already love. We both like the the game but it just seemed to be an exercise in grabbing and completing as many destinations as possible. We actually preferred to more slow and steady pace of the original TtR, longer and more valuable destinations as opposed to shorter less valuable destinations.

This game is up for trade.

Although I have all the TTR games, I didn't really care for Switzerland as we found it to be too easy; a friend and I played and we went through all of the tickets and got several hundred points each.

Nordic Countries, on the other hand, is just nasty; on my first play I got negative points! Definitely recommended when you have 2-3 and want to play some TTR.

Another Christmas gift that year. My wife is really attracted to abstract games so she gave this to us as a "family" gift. I really didn't care for the two or three player game play. My wife still likes it and my daughter likes to play occasionally as well.

After Blokus we entered a non-gaming period in our lives. We became bored with the games we owned and slowly went back to our old routines. I started playing more 360 and she started getting into more new shows on the television.

Blokus Trigon is excellent in three player and just find with 4. For two, I would play Blokus Duo. I believe someone posted instructions for converting regular blokus to travel blokus.

I disagree. Trigon is absolutely delicious with 2P. Also good with one, it's the only fully scaleable Blokus.

Beautiful, deep, simple rules, less than 30 minutes each. Wonderful games.

I've heard that YINSH is the best of that series, but thats the only version we currently own. It is however, in need of a handicapping mechanism, so I usually play until 4 rings removed while my GF needs only 3.

We both really enjoy this game, the cards and the resources. It's not the best game in the world but it did bring us back to the game table.

Well, I think this is one of *the* great couples' games. After many many plays a certain rhythm or pattern develops, that's hard to explain but quite addictive. One of the few games I own where the cards are quite worn (sadly - ie. sad that many more games aren't the same!)

Right after Christmas I made the decision to build and grow our game library. My priorities were build off what we already owned and then add and diversify the library. This is when I really started using the Geek to develop my wish/want list.

Fist up, I chose the 1910 expansion, mainly for the larger train cards. We also like the new rules and destinations. If we play the original TtR now, we only play with this expansion.

The other game we want to build off of was Carcassonne. I had read that Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders were consider must-haves. I bought both. We've only played with I&C and we love the extra addition of no points for unfinished castles and roads. It really has added to the game and we only play the game with this expansion now. We plan to add in T&B on our next play.

The next phase for my collection was addition and diversification. This is when my gaming addiction really kicked in full force. The rest of the games in this list were purchased in the past month and a half. I did tons of research on the Geek and found a great new FLGS in Chicago, Cat and Mouse. Sure I could get my games cheaper online, but I really like to support local business and also love the opportunity to touch, feel and play the game prior to purchase. Cat and Mouse has almost every game I'm interested available as in-store demo.

I had high hope for Mr. Jack. I wanted to add a deduction game to our collection. I like it but my wife is not that impressed with it. With more time, I'm sure we'd both appreciate it more but I've now bombarded my wife with so many new games I don't see Mr. Jack hitting the table any time soon.

Hmm... this is on my list to try, as I've heard a lot of couples like it, but I'm not sure my wife would like the theme. Interesting that your wife should be less then enthusiastic about it.

I need to try it with her before it actually lands on my wishlist.

Well, it IS a game for two and only two people... so in that sense it is a "couple's game." But it is a little heavier. I think it's fine to recommend, with the caveat that it can be a bit of a brain burner. And the couple has to be willing to face off directly. I think couples that like something like Battle Line would also like Mr. Jack. Couples that spend most of their time playing Ticket to Ride, maybe not.

I absolutely agree. I hated Mr. Jack but my boyfriend really enjoyed it. I didn't like Scotland Yard and really, Mr. Jack is like a two-person verision of that game.

I may be an expection, but I love Battle Line and hated Mr. Jack. I can't even put into words why I didn't like it but almost everything about it turned me off — the bits were really well done though. I wouldn't compare those two games though. Maybe I'm biased though because of my love/hate relationship with them.

This is one of the few games I have purchased that I have subsequently looked to sell. Most games I'll keep, but not this one. The reason? Its mislabeling as a "deduction" game. The game is basically a movement game where both players control the same pieces. There's not a lot of deduction, because the information is so binary. Either a character is the bad guy or isn't--there are no gradations of knowledge, such as in a deduction game as simple as Clue.

Anyway, the point is, anyone in Chicago want to buy Mr. Jack? I'll sell it cheaply, just check out my marketplace listing.

And I've been to Cat and Mouse as well. I love it, but I hope they do okay. It's a tough business.

The next category to fill in our collection was that of a cooperative game. Pandemic fills that spot perfectly. I was an instant hit with both of us though I think after 10-15 plays my wife probably likes it more than I do. I'm getting to the point of "been there, done that". I still like the game but with many more options in my collection, this is not my first choice.

We find that 5 epedemics provides us with enough wins and losses to keep us coming back for more. This is definetly a game that we will use to introduce our friends to new gaming.

The other games we played were:
Carcassonne
Rumis

My 6 year old has really picked up on the strategy in this game. When she draws a tile she really puts thought into not giving me a good truck. As a matter of fact, if there is a truck with 2 animals that benefit me, she snickers when she is able to place a bad tile on the truck that forces me to place an animal in my barn. She gets a kick out of screwing me over!

Oh my, what have I done?!? cry

Finally!!! I was a little afraid to invest in another heavy game after our Caylus experience but I just knew I needed one in my collection. We wanted more from gaming and I hoped that Agricola would scratch that itch. It does and more. We've played 3 times once with cards and twice without. We really enjoy it. There is such an enjoyable level of pressure and anxiety. It seems that after the first stage, the harvest is always the next round. We do wish the game lasted longer, we never get to finish what we want but I guess that's also what makes the game so great. At this point in this Geeklist, Agricola is our #1 game.

We also just bought some animeeples!

If you are experiencing an overabundance of food in 2 player Agricola, your opponent is being entirely too kind to you.

This was my girlfriend and my second game and although it took ages to learn to play, it was well worth it and has stayed on the top of our list (right after Dominion) since. I would love to hear more opinions on heavy games. Wish you still had Caylus to try it again as I was thinking of buying it.

It is funny how much my game selection for my wife and me parallels yours. But, this is where I get nervous. My wife and I got burned on RftG; it was just way too complicated, and nearly every recommendation I got was "keep trying it." So, even the thought of another high BGG rated card game makes me shiver!
I played RftG once and even won though I had no idea why I was making the choices I was making most of the time. It didn't click with me. I thought I would like it because I really enjoy San Juan. I haven't played it since.

I fell in love with dominion the first time I played it and its one of my wifes favorite games as well. When it comes time to look for another good card game that plays really well with 2, check out San Juan.

Good choice; Dominion is easy to "get" right away, but RftG (while a great game) takes several plays before it "clicks".

I grabbed Glory to Rome the same day I bought Dominion. The rules were a little difficult to get through but after a few readings and watching an online video we gave it a shot. We played the beginner game without using the structure special powers. I can see this game really growing on me and see quite a bit of depth in this little package. Unfortunately, my wife didn't really care for it at all. I suspect some of her dislike came from my inability to explain it quickly or thoroughly. And like others, I can't stand the packaging.

Mm. no. San Juan is the Race for the Galaxy/Puerto Rico mechanic pared down and made into a small elegant game. GtR, while it has role selection, uses them in such a completely different way, (clients, requirement to follow) with much more indirect interaction (cards going into the pool), that I don't think the comparison works.

I suspect GtR requires a much higher tolerance for random stuff happening, though.

We went back to our FLGS yesterday so the kids could spend some birthday money and so that I could pick up Stone Age. They had just sold the last copy of Stone Age, so I was bummed.

Of course, I couldn't return home without a game. It came down to Aquaretto or Thebes. We both really loved the Thebes demo we had and the components really nice. In the end, my wife voted to put Thebes back on the wishlist and get Aquaretto. She figures it can be added to Zooloretto to make a fun game, more fun and and length to it (as she felt Zoo was too short). Also, it's another game that our daughter can play with us.

We are going to play it tonight so I will return with our ratings.

I'm not sure I think much of Zooloretto+Aquaretto. It kind of feels like you are playing two games instead of one larger game.

However I REALLY like Aquaretto, especially with the expansions found in Zooloretto XXL and the RGG "Gorilla" package! I vastly prefer it to Zooloretto.

Great, now you tell me! Seriously, I wasn't overly happy with the addition of this game to our collection, as I really wanted Thebes. I have made almost every other purchase decision so this one belonged to my better half. If anything, it's two great games to play with my daughter (and my 4 year old son when he's ready).

Thebes is very good, though I don't think it's at its best with 2 players. It's got a balance of luck and strategy that really works for me, and can make for fun in-game story telling; "I studied for months all over europe and after weeks of digging all I found in the holy land was dirt, and you decide to pop down for a week and stumble over the Ark of the Covenant?".

I'm convinced that a lot of the fun is in the exploration-- getting out the tokens to see what you've found.

Another game I quite like in this mode is Lost Valley.

The owner of the FLGS, who had come to know our family by now, recognized how bummed out I was that Stone Age was out of stock. She went into her back room and brought out her demo version and said, take this home for a week. Wow, what a great gesture. We were already impressed with this store but she just kicked it up a notch!

We played a game last night and absolutely fell in love with it. We don't get that same rushed feeling we get from Agricola. It's heavy enough for us, done in about 45 minutes, and it's going to be easily accessible to our non-gaming friends when they come over for game night. We just love everything about this game. Agricola is deeper but this game has great depth yet you can still socialize and have a good time. My wife stated that this is by far her favorite game (see a pattern here?)! She even said, just mail her a check and tell her we want to keep the demo.

Yep. As a matter of fact, I just got back from returning the demo and buying my copy of Stone Age for $45.00. Sure, I spent $10 more than if I were to buy from an online retailer but I just consider that to be a luxury tax. I consider it a luxury to have such a great store available to me.

....heck, by now, I should should just get a part-time job there.

My wife was very reluctant to play Stone Age because she felt, I think, the theme is not for her, and the rules might be overwhelming. I eventualy get her to play this game and she realized she was wrong with the rules, explained in about 10 minutes and easily understood, and the theme is not really annoying. It became her favorite game in no time whistle

This is one I'd recommend that you try before buying. The couple I game with (they host weekly game sessions) have quite disparate views on this. She saw it played once and thought it would be fun but upon playing for herself has decided that it's a bad game because of the screw-your-neighbour aspect. He has played it twice (both games already mentioned) and enjoys it, possibly for the same reason.
I also played in both those games and rate it a 6. There's a combination of luck and 'skill' (deciding what chances to take with placement) but it doesn't grab me in the way other games do.

We received this via a trade for Glory to Rome. Of course, GtR is a much deeper game but, in reality, this game will get played more often. We already had a friend coming over for a game night and For Sale arrived on the same day. A perfect opportunity to try this game out. We used it as a warm up. Right out of the box, this game was easy to learn and a lot of fun. I can see why it would be more fun with a larger group. We played with the round up to the bank and we did run short of money toward the end of the game. Our biggest mistake was that we didn't remove the instructed amount of cards for a 3 player game. If we would have done that then I'm sure money wouldn't have been an issue.

Over the past few weeks, we've received a few games via trades and I thought I'd add to our list.

First up was Puerto Rico. When I accepted this trade (for TtR Marklin, I believe), I figured I'd just end up trading it seems to have good trade value. I also found the 2 player reviews to be mixed, some loved it, more just "liked", it, and others hated it.

We played the official 2 player variant and fell in love with this game. Very easy to learn, different than any other game in our library, and more laid back than Agricola. We still think Agricola is better but we can tell that we will play Puerto Rico often. I can't wait to try a 3 player game.

It's great as 2 player. I would suggest take 5 occupations out of the 7 available: 2 for one player and three for the other player (as govenor) so the same player doesn't get two turns in a row. It reverses on the next turn so the other player gets 3 roles (as govenor) and the other player gets 2 roles.

25. Board Game: Animal Upon Animal [Average Rating:6.91 Overall Rank:504]

Next up was Animal Upon Animal. I bought this game for "the kids" knowing full well that my wife and would enjoy. Not only do we enjoy it, we love it. It's a fun game with play with the kids (ages 4 and 6) but it's also a game that we will pull out when they are in bed.

We've come to find that there are really two games in the box. The base game is really a competition to get rid of all your pieces while making it difficult for your opponent to do the same. Playing this way, not only do you try to successfully place your piece but you also want to place it in such a manner that it makes it difficult for your opponents next placement.

The second way to play (our preferred method) is a cooperative game. We both take two of each animal work together to try to get rid of all our pieces. We still use the dice but when placing, we try to build a good solid foundation so that we can get higher and higher. We also offer each other suggestions on best placement positions.

We have found that we get a lot of enjoyment playing in this cooperative manner. We had a game the other night were we each had three pieces left (out of 14 each) and we had yet to roll the Alligator so our foundation was just on the starting base! Finally we rolled two Alligators in a row to expand the base and provide us with an easy win. What does my wife do with her last placement??? She takes her penguin, and instead of an easy placement on either end of the alligator, she attempts to put him on the very top of the tower. Guess the outcome.

I'll try to remember to upload the photo I took of the tower just before collapse.

Anyhow, this game is a great buy for $20. It can be a kid game, a family game, am adult game, a cut-throat game, or a co-op game. All in one box!

Have you tried Animal upon Animal - The Duel? It's a two player version featuring 4 new animals (squirrel, tiger, octopus, and goose). The game comes with two of each animal, but if you get two boxes you can combine it with the regular game.

There's also a new edition of the game due out at SPIEL '10, Animal Upon Animal Balancing Bridge. This one comes with 5 new animals (giraffe, bat, iguana, flamingo, and panther - which looks suspiciously like a black version of the tiger in Duel), and a bridge inside the box that you have to balance the animals on. There's a deck of cards with the game that gives you an assignment of how to stack the animals to win the game. I'm definitely picking this up for the 5 new types of animals.
