Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

devil

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

... fired ...

My wife got me Wasabi! last Christmas... and developed a strong dislike for it within 3 games (which is too bad... because I rather like it). Luckily not long after I tried Ingenious at game night and decided to pick up a copy. Its now one of our favorite games, but ensures poor Wasabi won't be played anywhere but game nights anymore...

Sounds more like your wife fired Wasabi! I love the unintentional "Take That" aspect of Wasabi!

I also love how any statement ending with the name of said game looks like you are yelling.

Wasabi! fired itself for me. Great components, loved the theme, but in the end it was like a slightly more enjoyable Scrabble.

I haven't played Dominion, and while there are plenty of games I'd say would fire Race for the Galaxy, Innovation is not one of them.

Race for the Galaxy is at least a balanced game. Every time I play Innovation the first 3/4ths of the game almost don't matter at all. The last 1/4th of the game is just waiting for the ultra powerful or the instant win cards to show up.

I guess i've only played Innovation a handful of times though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Personally, my vote for head-honcho of these sorts of games would be 51st State.

Innovation is not bad, but Race for the Galaxy maintains its greatest by being wonderfully balanced (though I am a purist and I don't touch any of the expansions to it, I don't want any VP creep).

EDIT: And Innovation is only playable with 2 players unless everyone has played it a few times already then you can play 3. 4 is always insane. Race for the Galaxy on the other hand plays very well with 2, 3, or 4 players.

Innovation felt chaotic and random with 4 players. There was a lot of luck involved in my play session.

I'd definitely prefer Dominion and I'm not huge on Race either way.

My group played a lot of RftG, and GtR never really took of with us for some reason, but Innovation fired them both. I think its success stems from having more direct player interaction than RftG and having a slightly longer player time.

Good call Josh. Innovation can be a bit swingy with 4 players... not a bad thing if one likes that. Its a good 3 player game. Problem is we've played it as a 'nightcap' and it can be a thinker... you have to pay close attention to your opponents tableaus.

But ironically, unless you know the cards very well and can "read" them from memory, it is very hard to read all of your opponents' cards in Innovation, whereas with RtfG, the iconography allows you to pretty quickly assess what they have and guess what role they might choose. I need to try Innovation again with fewer players, but after my first very un-fun game with 4 players I am not that excited to give it another try. For me, San Juan rules over both RtfG and GtR, but I am still happy to play the latter 2.

I agree, that's what I'm saying. You have to actively read them to know them. Good thing is there are only 4-5 that you must read, right? For the different colors?

True. And often a player may be using the same ability turn after turn. I guess the fine text just added to my feeling of chaos and in reality shouldn't have been such an obstacle. I will give it another try sometime.

Definitely ease your way into it with a 2 or 3 player game if you can. Then post some session reports and reviews.

Nah, Invasion is the better game. It doesn't matter if you prefer zombies and the regular townfolk, the fact is that both the Martians and the carnies are way more interesting to play. The heroes are your regular joes (read "happless morons") who will apparently go from house to house searching for weapons. The carnies may do the same thing, but they're more likely to say, "Screw it," and launch themselves out of a cannon or breathe fire on the Martians. Yeah, the carnies may be sort of cheesy, but the are *SO* much more fun to play.

As for Martians vs. zombies...well, you get to make choices. You know, like when you play what's supposed to be a "real game." The Zard Beast is just mean. Fear the Zard Beast with every fiber of your being.

Bottom line: Zombie theme may be cooler, but as far as an actual game goes, Invasion comes out on top. There shouldn't even be debate about this.

This is why I don't own Jaipur. I'm too afraid that it'll hurt my relationship with Jambo. I'd rather be burned out by Jambo then have another game fire it for me. However, the benefit here is that Jaipur is easier to get new players on board for. If you don't know the cards, you won't win Jambo.

FIRED Lost Cities.
Listen, Lost Cities is a good game but nothing to write home about. First it got kicked in the shins by Battle Line and recently Jaipur finished it off for good. Yes siree.
To me it's more thematic and varied plus Jaipur's got more interaction overall. Looks great, plays great. For a gaming quickie, don't go searching anymore for those god-forsaken lost cities, just get on a plane to Rajasthan baby!cool

I can't disagree with you outright, because I see the appeal of Jaipur... It just didn't do it for me. We played it a few times one night and then I traded it away. It was a neat little game, but if we're playing a short two-player card game, we'll just stick with Battle Line.

Just wondering that since OP said Lost Cities was originally nothing to write home about, it's not surprising he preferred Jaipur. My wife loves Lost Cities, and we got Jaipur, hoping it would be great, but it was not a hit with either of us - it scratches a different itch than LC. I would say Battle Lines fired Lost Cities for me, but really I would prefer to play 2p Dominion (with various expansions) over any of these 3.

Culbertson's jazzed up version of the traditional european game of Klabberjass/Bela. With his modernized scoring and streamlined rules, and the built-for-excitement bridge scoring, there's absolutely no reason to play the original.

(Five ratings, two BGG entries under different names: not bad for an old game from the 30s!)

So all 3 BGG users who play Klaberjass can become 3 users who play Jo-Jotte.

Both are fun games, but Kung Fu Fighting has better defined roles and more variety, while remaining cleaner to play. The combo's alone make it better than Bang!

Im not a big Bang fan but KFF is booorining after one or two plays. The only good thing about it is you get to talk like you are in an old Kung Fu movie. But I guess you could do that in any game.

Labyrinth can't fire TS because 1) it isn't over yet, and 2) we don't know how the story ends, therefore we necessarily can't determine whether or not this game is an accurate simulation.

Keep in mind that Lancaster is, at its root, worker placement. I LOVE it, but there isn't any real combat in it. I do think that it scratches the thematic itch for me though.

It's Zombies!!! with a plot and actual characters!

Mind you, just because I don't need Zombies!!!, I'll still keep it around just in case I want to be reminded...

Once upon a time, I was a big fan of ZOMBIES!!!, and bought most of the expansions for it. But now that we've been exposed to Last Night on Earth with its glorious expansions, ZOMBIES!!! no longer sees the light of day.

And LNoE has also fired the following games, as well:

ZombieTown

Maul of America

Zombie Plague

All Things Zombie

Dead of Night

All of these games work off of the same basic mechanic: The board is a map with a grid superimposed upon it across which humans free-roam in order to get to search areas which ultimately facilitate their winning of the game. LNoE, with the Growing Hunger and Survival of the Fittest expansions, simply does it better, and is therefore the only necessary incarnation to actively pursue.

I loved that ability to eff your opponent in Zombies. That's probably the only reason I keep it around after buying LNOE. But if you really need that ability, just play as the Zombie in LNOE. Nothing like dropping those timely screw over cards on the humans.

At this point, I think that's probably true. I spent a Small fortune on Zombies!!! and Zombie expansions when I first got into gaming, but I sold them all when I got Last Night on Earth. In a way, though... I wish I had kept them around, just for the memories. They were taking up shelf space, though, and I know that I would (probably) never play them again.

Last of the Independents is faster moving, compared to the plodding tech. tree type approach to Automobile which gives few tactical choices once you set your course. In LOTI there are surprises at every turn. Hard choices abound, but limited amounts of money keep the pace quick. While luck is a big factor,it can be mitigated in several tactical fashions. Sacrifices here and there can reap great benefits somewhere else. Power plays can do their duty when necessary. The three ways to win tokens keep you on your toes both offensively and defensively. It just sort of cuts to the quick the essentials of hard core competition on an economic level.

Enjoyed my first game of Automobile, but Last of the Independants fell flat with our whole game group on it's first play.

Completing all 3 trends was nigh on impossible, I won the game by ignoring the trends altogether.

Last night another game started which I wasn't playing. The rules had been modified to make achieving 1 trend wins a token, 2 trends a victory point, and 3 trends a VP and token.

Judging by the howls of laughter coming from the table, it appears to have dramatically improved the game.

100% agreed! I buy things like beach checkers and cheap checker board games as gifts and include the rules to LOA. Vastly superior to checkers, which isn't a bad game, but it's sort of simple, bording on tic-tac-toe simple, and yet copmpletely unforgiving. First one that makes bad move loses.

Lines of Action is simply one of the best abstracts EVER, IMHO.

I like the ability to play with more players. I like the cards. I like the ability to own horses. I like the ability to bet on horses until they're in the no bets zone. I like the ability to reroll once in the game. I like the decisions as to how best to use the money you earn throughout the game. However, I like the fat ponies of WC much better.

Winner's Circle is the better game from a game design standpoint. For a non-gamer crowd, I suspect that Long Shot would be the more entertaining choice however. With this distinction, I think it comes down more to which group you're more likely to be playing these games with (gamers or not?).

Pandemic

LOTR is a much better cooperative game to me since everyone's fate is not necessarily tied together, and there is reason for players to help each other as individual characters instead of just doing whatever is best for some big end goal without any threat to themselves as an individual player.

Pandemic has a lot of "directing" that goes on and in LOTR there is definitely some of that but I find it is often more consulting than directing: "What risk are we going to take? Can you discard this or that?" etc. In Pandemic the choices are generally pretty clear, and things only get tense and complicated late in the game, where LOTR gets complicated really fast, and stays at this level of complication through most of the game.

I though I can agree on the "directing" part i feel that Pandemic is more engaging to the players.

Even though Pandemic suffers from that players those persons that have played the game before are generally better, I think Pandemic is a better game. In a way the core mechanics (play a suit of cards at given times) I like it better when the cooperation of getting those cards are better incorperated in Pandemic. And you don't need to fiddle around with 4 massive boards (+ the "evil-track")

Two things I like better about LoTR is that it allows players to be "that guy". You know the one.. The one that has some grudge against either the game or other players and want's to screw everyone else over.
The second thing is the High Score. I love cooperative games were you can see that the group is making progress as you play more often.

I love love love Chinatown. I dunno what it is about the game that's so much fun. But there's really never a reason to play it again. Lords of Vegas is basically Chinatown with a better theme, more options (take risks to build out), and better than that, if you need a lil extra money, you can gamble at an opponents casino!

Great game. Sorry Chinatown.

I love both, actually. Though it's easier to explain Chinatown to non-gamers for some reason.

The one really great thing that I like that Vegas has over Chinatown is the ability to seize control and affect the landscape once it has been laid; in Chinatown, short of a trade, once that Dim Sum joint is placed by an opponent, it's his for good. With Lords of Vegas, you can attempt a hostile takeover and wrest the majority out from under an opponent's controlling interest...

197. Board Game: Lords of Vegas [Average Rating:7.23 Overall Rank:347]

LoV has the same majority control and hostile takeover aspects of Acquire, but corporations pay out constantly and ownership is more fluid. There is a lot more luck involved than Acquire, but that is only fitting for a Vegas game. Overall, I think it provides a tense, engaging game until the last card is drawn.

That is an odd way of looking at Acquire.

I think I might be in agreement. We played LoV and Acquire back-to-back this weeekend, and where Acquire is more tense, Lords of Vegas is more fun. Mechanically, I'd give it to Acquire as being the better game, but the negotiation/trading aspect of Lords of Vegas is where this game succeeds.

Still not ready to sell Acquire just yet, though.

Agreed. I tend to like games with less luck more than those with more luck.

I guess that's why I like so called Euro's better than so called Ameritrash. Although I do enjoy a game of Cosmic with the right group.

FIRED Skip-Bo
as the two-player card game I played with my spouse. This was important, as no matter where we traveled, we always packed a card game just in case. For quite some time that was Skip-Bo, until that fateful day I discovered BGG and dug up some wonderful-sounding alternatives. Of all the ones we tried, Lost Cities clicked with us the best, and now, years later, it's still the one we tuck away into our suitcase. Bless you, Reiner Knizia. Bless you.

FIRED: Lost Cities

It has the same mechanic but supports more players, has easier score tracking, and throws in the bonus items on the map. Especially when played with the variant to allow increasing or decreasing expeditions, this game is strictly better in all but portability.

(Note: I know not everyone agrees on the variant. It does make discarding more difficult and unlikely but it almost entirely solves the huge issue I had with the starting hand randomness.)

I agree with this, but there's a nice crunchy mathiness to Lost Cities that I feel the board game lacks. Still, if I only owned one, it would probably be the board game.

Disagree - Lost Cities is still better. I don't particularly like Lost Cities all that much, but the board game is worse. I don't see how adding players makes the game any better, and I don't like the Knizia mechanic of bonus tiles on the scoring track - bleh! YMMV

Interesting mechanics, but it becomes fairly boring after a while. A game with a 7.27 rating and a place in the top 200 is neither underrated nor overlooked.

I suppose that is true. I stand corrected.

Though, I was going on more personal levels...

Say I'm considering buying a new game and want to know if something else has fired it for people...

I wish there was a way you could search this list inversely. In fact, it would be more useful, if maybe not quite as interesting to read, than the current alphabetized by "Firer" rather than "Fired" setup.

Anyway, is there any way to do that? Or at least to limit a search to this geeklist?
