Unfortunately there are no updates on their forums for more than half a year, except one last post "we won't be doing any major updates any time soon, as we work on something else very very big"... sad, but seems to be true - the app is completely forgotten by developers.

The interface and gameplay are very smooth - it's a realy well constructed piece of software.

Excellent to play with another person, but the AI is too weak to present a serious challenge.

Definitely worth it if you are into Small World.

A 3p would be nice, but I'm not sure how they would fit the 3rd player race marker on the screen?

Actually tried that with an iPad and 4 iPhones and it was pretty amazing. You flick your tiles off the iPhone, and they appear on the game board. You don't need the iPhones, though - you can also play in a mode where the current player's tile rack appears next to the board.

Also, iPad and iPhone versions of the game can play together over wifi.

I think this is going to be huge for board games, especially on planes and in airports, and so forth.

Unfortunately, the only internet play it offers is through Facebook, which already has Scrabble on it for free. (I also wish you could turn off all the obnoxious animation like you can on the Facebook version.)

With those two problems it still wins hands down over Words With Friends, which I got first (because my existing iPad pals already had it.) Here's what's wrong with WWF:

1) Since it's a Scrabble knockoff, they had to change the board layout and some point values. Many of the point changes are dumb (does a U need to be 2 points, especially when most 10-point Qs are paired with it?) and the board layout is such that there's a triple-letter score four spaces away from a triple word score. Yay for nine-upled Zs!

2) It doesn't show you how many tiles your opponent has left, which is very important at the end.

3) Although it doesn't allow you to play bogus words, there's no way to "look up" a word beforehand. You just have to try it and see. And that try better be exactly the play you want, since if the word is legal, that's your move. If your play results in multiple words but one is illegal, it doesn't tell you which one.

4) Although you can rearrange your tile rack manually, one letter at a time, there's no "shuffle" option to reorganize it randomly at once, which is way helpful.

5) Most importantly, it doesn't tell you how many points a potential play is worth. That is, if you're considering two different plays, even though you're holding more computing power than what sent people to the moon in 1969, you have to add it all up yourself.

In short, it's a computer game that didn't bother to use the actual computer. It was obviously made by people who were more interested in just doing a Scrabble knockoff than in finding out what might make a Scrabble knockoff (or ANY computer game, for that matter) any good.

And unfortunately, I can't get my friends away from it, even though it's just an awful computer game.

If someone feels strongly enough to gift an app, then i'd be inclined to think it's worth getting. I had hesitated as i had bought Labyrinth from TribeFlame/Knizia when it was at 59p and didn't enjoy it.

That might be a compelling argument on germanautogeek.com.

But I've been to the BMW museum in Munich, and I'm pretty sure they are doing just fine without my help. Startups coding board games for iPhone and iPad are a different story, though, and I want to keep those board games coming.

I did buy Labyrinth and enjoyed it a bit, but it doesn't really feel like a board game in the traditional sense. If it's not the most enjoyable game on my iPad, I think it's more of a Reiner thing than a Tribeflame thing. I enjoyed Tribeflame's "Through the Desert" and have played the board game version, but Keltis Oracle is definitely my favorite title in their catalog. I'm not sure it ever made it to the US as a physical board game, either - which makes it a bit of a rarity.

I don't know if it includes the "More" from "Mü & More", but "Mü" is now a universal binary in the app store - which means that for one price you get a game that runs (in proper format and resolution) on both the iPad and iPhone. Includes AI players and bluetooth multiplayer.

Personally, I love the Shake-a-hint feature. I really don't like, however, that the only way to use it is to shake the device. It's bad enough on the iPhone and just sucks on the iPad. Wish there was an additional option to use a double-click on the table instead of needing to shake the device.

Totally agree! Kind of messes with the game feel...if I wanted exercise, I'd have downloaded one of those "use the whole ipad as steering wheel" driving games, or got a Wii!

Well, now that I [finally] have it on the iPhone, not only can I imagine playing it, I *am* playing it! It actually works really well. The user interface is great, the AI is good, and even the solitaire game is compelling(!). Some day I'll have to give the online play a go.

It's a winner. Go buy it.

There's a werewolf implementation on the iPad that's pretty cool. You end up passing the iPad around the group and there are items to trade and a variety of special characters. The icon is a sort of cartoony werewolf picking his teeth with a bone.

I got the paid version. Other than the absence of the "buy the full version button" and the soul comforting feeling of supporting a good game developer I haven't noticed a difference.

That seems odd, doesn't it? I mean, we paid a buck to even get the main app. So if he's asking twice that amount I'd expect ther to be something there. Anyone else know what this bonus add on to the app comprises?

I bought it! It's a bit crashy and the new bugs are interesting, but I reserve full judgment until I can play it with humans. The AIs are functional, but stupid.

I can't quite decide if it's doing the "and when you have your own ice floe, you get to move around and snap up everything you can when other players are out of legal moves" mechanic correctly. It seems it just ends the game when other players can't move.

It ends the game when the player with the most honey is the only player able to move. If the only player able to move doesn't have the most, they can run around and pick up more.

As far as I know the designers of the original game didn't give a licence for this app. I don't like it when somebody "steals" the rules/gameplay of another game. In my opinion it is not enough to change only the graphics.

We updated the AI players recently to be faster and smarter. One-on-one is still reasonably easy to beat, but with 2 or 3 hard AI opponents you now have a challenge.

We'd love to hear feedback about this!

I've wanted the boardgame of this for a while but knew it wouldn't get played. I just played my first game of it. The tutorial was excellent and taught me well. Gameplay was great. It looks great and has a real "boardgame" feeling to it that I do miss with a lot of the apps.

There weren't any problems I saw. Thanks for doing a great job!

Mods, Please delete this if I am wrong about this.

I have never played Khet, but this looks to possibly be a clone or knockoff. Could someone confirm/deny?

Its called Laser Chess and it is free on the appstore. Looks to be relatively unknown. It needs more polish, but could hold promise I suppose.

The pieces look quite different.
One big difference is that in Khet the laser is fixed to the side of the board while in Laser Chess the laser is one of your moving pieces. Laser chess seems to have a greater variety of pieces, which might be more difficult to reproduce in a physical game...

So the two games are probably not related, but I would vote to keep Laser Chess in this list as it's still a kind of boardgame for iPad!

Having Boggle available isn't news, and I love it, because I'm a big Boggle Whore, but I can never tell the game that because "whore" is not allowed. Apparently Hasbro felt that some words must be shielded from young eyes and therefore all your usual swears are not counted as words. Fair enough. But there are a lot of other exclusions that are just plain baffling. While "tit" is still legal, "slut" is not. Neither is "orgy", which is a perfectly standard word, not slang, which just happens to describe an often sexual activity. And at the ridiculous end of the scale, "queer" is also verboten, despite having a completely innocuous standard meaning. I haven't found any menu item to restore these words since I'm a grown-up and can handle them.

"tit for tat" may have made "tit" legal. You may find that "ass" is legal for similar reasons.

I've played several games using the new version and they've all run without a hitch.

The AI is better now at the default difficulty level, and without slowing the game down, so good job there. It still does some strange things (e.g. one AI opponent had 667788 when my partner and I were down to one card each and his partner was out, and he laid them down as individual pairs instead of all at once), but they're much better about hanging onto the Phoenix and Dragon now and my partner doesn't make as many crazy mistakes.

The sound effects are nice, but got too annoying since the game makes noise every time you touch a card. I wish there was a way to disable particular sounds, but I just turned them off completely and gamed on.

Great job on the update, and please, please think about porting more games to this wonderful engine.

You can independently disable some of the sound effects. The "Hey! It's your turn again!" effect and the "Spotlight just moved to someone else" effect are both off by default. And the effect whenever a card moves can also be disabled. But yeah, turning them off completely works too.

DOH! I turned Cards to "off" and now it's perfect. For whatever reason I didn't think that setting had anything to do with the sound, even though it's in the sound menu. Apologies for disseminating false information -- I should have known you'd include a way to adjust things individually.

Bah, it's not a universal binary. I don't think I'll be paying another 5 bucks for an app I've already paid for. The main drawback of the iPhone version was the lack of pass-and-play multiplayer. So instead of fixing the issue on the iPhone, they leverage it as an "iPad only" bonus play mode. Screw that. Treat the EXISTING customers better, and maybe you'll get repeat business. Boo on them!

I bought Blokus on the PSP and the AI really sucked. Disappointing- I was able to make it to the final 'stage' on the story mode straight through with no challenge at all. I think the game took me all of an hour or two to beat. And I am no Blokus genius!

So.... my question does the AI on this version seem similarly weak to anyone else who has played it?

This app is entirely in Japanese.

$4.99 Net Jankyo HD
http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Smq3RC8yf5I&offe...

This is the Japanese 4-player variant of Mahjong, also called Reach (riichi) Mahjong. I play this a lot online and was delighted to find an iPad version.

It includes solo play vs. AI as well as an online mode. No local networked play is available. The online mode requires points, of which you are given a small amount to begin with. If you win, you gain points and vice versa if you lose. If you run out of points, you have to purchase more in the app. Kind of crappy if you're a beginner and lose a lot.

I bought it immediately. I would love to see support for adding other human players on multiple devices into the game, but regardless of that it's a great purchase - $2.99 for a polished version of a great Knizia game that you can play on both iPad and iPhone. I did not see any bugs.

It apparently shares a lot of the same app code as "Money". If someone wrote the multiplayer feature, it might turn both games into "killer apps".

Well, I wouldn't - and certainly didn't - say that.

Just struck me as odd that the art from the current edition is in use for the game, except for the product placement ad. I'd merely prefer it used the original artwork there as well, and be ad-free if it's a paid app.

There's a rule difference with the thief in this implementation. In the original game you choose which of your items he steals, whereas in this app he always steals the most valuable one. This can make a significant difference in deciding how to bid!

Update: the latest version has corrected this so the thief takes the lowest-value card now.

I posted some initial thoughts in this thread for the game at Touch Arcade, but I have played a bunch more and will quickly summarize here, from the perspective of a boardgamer and tech guy who had never played Medici before:

The Good:
-Overall a great game.

-Very polished menu and control system.

-Seems to be a solid implementation of the rules of the game. Everything worked the way it should and was very straightforward

-Very easy-to-read and understand Help guide (not sure if it was just a copy of the actual rules from the game)

-Nice graphics and fitting background music. Nice sound effects as well.

The Weak (and suggestions for improvement):
-AI seems a bit weak. My first game I played with a two, a four, and a five-star player and mopped the floor with them. I now play with me and four copies of the '5 star' AI guy and usually win, but at least it's a bit of a challenge. Better AI would be a big bonus.

-Brutal bug where is you click in any area on the player selection screen outside the 'target' zones where you are supposed to touch, it crashes. This one really should have been caught in QA.

-Because the AI is weak, other challenges would help. To start with, a high score tracker so you can at least try and beat your previous high score.

-Also, a set of challenges similar to how Roll Through The Ages on iPhone implemented them. E.g., one challenge each for getting the max amount of a good in a game, one challenge for winning by at least 30 points against 3 '5 star' opponents, one challenge for getting the 30 point 'high value' bonus on all 3 days, etc.

-Would love to see online multiplayer

-Would also like a 'fast forward' button during the part where it scores all players' goods from their ships at the end of a Day. After you play a bunch of games, this part just seems unnecessarily long and drags the pace down.

At any rate, I was relieved to see a good quality product come from this developer given all the other licenses they have. Hopefully they implement some of the features above (and get rid of the one bad bug), and keep those features standard on their next games. (The high scores and challenges, and hopefully the multiplayer). If so, we are in for a great stretch of iPad boardgaming and I will be buying pretty much every game that they put out.

I downloaded Medici last week and have played it quite a bit. It is visually beautiful. I had never played the game, so the app was my first experience with the game.

We played several 2-player games locally while waiting at the airport and it definitely passed the time.

I would recommend this one if you like auction/bidding games.

I think the main point is that it has nothing to do with Supremacy. Maybe it could be re-entered as "Risk" (and see if anyone complains then) or another game that it's closer to, or one of the generic BGG items.

Currently available as an iPhone app, but it looks and plays great on the iPad. It includes the ability to choose from a variety of versions of the game, including classic and carbon. It's also been announced that this version of the game is going to be the first to get the Ladybug expansion. Hopefully we'll see a full iPad release in the future.

Since there are a lot of good apps that are designed for the iPhone that also play on the iPad let's limit this list to games that play on the iPad in HD and leave the others to the iPhone list http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/27829/iphone-board-games.

I recommend subscribing to both lists and my list about the not-yet-realeased games http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/56010/going-digital-boardg...

24. Board Game: Pentago [Average Rating:6.47 Overall Rank:1139]

I stumbled upon this Pentrow game for the iPad the other day, and it's a decent implementation of Pentago.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/pentarow/id320730159?mt=8

There is no AI yet, but the game is great fun for two human players. It uses arrow buttons to rotate the square segments, but that actually works well for simplicity's sake.

Best of all, the game is FREE!

I couldn't believe how convenient it was to play this game with someone on the large iPad screen. I like the real physical game, but I can't deny the convenience of just tap-and-go while sitting together on the couch or in a car.

EDIT: Actually, I don't know why this didn't come up when I searched last time, but there is also an official version called Pentago HD, for $0.99. From the screenshot, it looks like this one has an AI to play against.

haha, yeah that is pricey I know. But if you like the game and all its variations, the value is there. It will even post bragging rights to your Facebook news feed.

Aside from the regular game, the multi-player version is tremendous fun; and the single player Set puzzles are a fun diversion.

I think I may want an Ipad. I have some money saved up towards it, but will need a lot more. I figure by the time I get the money, I will have made up my mind. BTW, this thing has a built in mic and skype so that you can use internet phone. With a webcam, that would be awesome.

Has anyone used the GameChanger Game Board for iPad?

While it doesn't seem to be a 'specific' board game, but more of a board game device to let you play a series of board games. I'm curious to see it later this week and find out more.

I played this at the Chicago Toy & Game Fair... and I happen to know that I am getting it for xmas. I'll have to write a detailed review (probably on my blog) at some point after I've spent more time with it. Seemed to me that the existing games were aimed a little young. At least one is little more than roll-and-move, but it's a novel concept and I think there is enormous potential. I just hope they add some more strategic games to the arsenal.
