NOW OFFICIALLY OVER 260 THUMBS - THANKS TO ALL SUPPORTERS OF MY #1 GEEKLIST

As my profile and a previous geeklist attest to, I consider myself very lucky to have met and married my wife Nicole, who, despite not being a boardgamegeek like myself, has jumped into playing various games with gusto both when we were dating and now that we are married.

I have previously submitted a list of my top 3 games I play with Nicole, but I have realised a new list is required. Since our daughter Mackenzie was born in 2008, we have found ourselves with less and less time as parents of a toddler to fit in a board game here and there. This issue has only been exacerbated since our son Frazer was born in October 2011!

Consequently, we have found ourselves coming back to the same four games time and time again, as they are engaging games that can be played in minimal time. When your children only sleep for a few hours during the day (and you are too tired to play at night) it is critical to select games that will stand a chance of getting played and ones that you will still actually enjoy playing, so here they are:

Don't bother it won't, we hated it. For a quick card game try Monopoly Deal Card Game or Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper. Much much better or probably the best of all is just a good old fashioned game of Cribbage

A relative newcomer to our collection, COTM combines beautiful artwork with a simple but subtly complex mechanic, we have found ourselves grabbing this one out a lot, even more so than Lost Cities of late...

I'm tempted by this one, but dice have woken our baby up from her nap. We now put down a towel to roll the dice on, and this seems to do the trick.

I found out about this game via my other spouse-related geeklist, this has been a real hit since we bought it earlier this year - a game that offers complexity and thinking in a 30 minute two player game. This is more complex than Lost Cities and COTM, but without a big time giveaway...

Yes, there is hope - when they get into high school, learn to drive and don't want to see you anymore. Before then, you just trade midnight feedings for football practice and Scouting, and all of the other things that require parents to drive and/or lead.

The good news is that, if you raise them right, you have more gamers in the family...

Coming in at #4 is Mr Jack, this is the longest of the games on this list, but again can be played in 30-40 minutes with practice. Of all the four, this is the most thematically fun game, and feels less of a math exercise and more of a genuine 'whodunnit' - great to get a fantastical theme in a short time game.

You might want to grab the new version Arena: Roma II. Makes it easier to understand the cards by adding text to the cards, and seems to avoid some balance problems that Roma had.

I definitely second this one, one of our favorites!

Though I didnt really care for Roma II, a lot of the cards just didnt seem very good and it seemed just funky compared with the base game. I didnt mind them both mixed together.

But I think youre fine just with Roma I, never had problems with balance myself...

Plus the box is a less ridiculous size

Granted, some cards just rarely seem to get played, the only 'unbalance' issue that I've found after 30+ games is the Mercator card... simple fix: just have it be 3 sestersii instead of 2 per VP.

The great thing about Cribbage is it's a long game, but you can set it aside between hands in case the young one wakes up.

There are lots of other great 2p games you can play with that cheap deck of cards, including Casino and, our favorite, Gin Rummy.

Playing at a "not-too-rushed" pace I generally get a game completed in 25-30 minutes. If you push things, you can get a game finished in under 20. I play 150 times or so per year, but rarely try to play fast.

And another one she likes to and asks me to play during the daytime sleep break. It's light but fun, it's also about 30 mins to play and can be played very silently.

We LOOOOOVE this game, and by "we" I mean "I".
This is one that I can't say no to.
It's quick, it's cute, it's simple, and it's fun!

When your child is a little older, you can use it to help teach her math; don't let her eat the pieces though!

this one is also quick to play and fun even when you are tried after a day of parenting. also it's not only a two player game, so if you are lucky enough to have friends over and your little one is still sleeping you can explain this game in 5min tops and play with any number of players.

I don't know about Roll through the Ages, but we just played this last night. It's comparable to Yahtzee. Really, it's Catan-themed Yahtzee. Don't misunderstand, I like Yahtzee, but there's not a lot of strategy here.

it's really like roll through the ages' little brother. you have less choices to make (where to build what and what will i re-roll) and it's over even quicker. perfect if you are already tired but still want to play a short game, but also fun in groups as a filler or as a non-gamer game. i like both, roll through the ages and the catan dice game a lot.

It plays real fast, and when you've got baby brain, isn't too deep...(so you might get some game time in at night).

I reviewed it with my wife here as a quick date...

ah, i thought of one more. we also like to play this one, when our little one is asleep. to make it work as a 2 player game, we don't score the fields, because otherwise the game just revolves around getting enough meeple into "that one big field" to win.

"different tiles"? i'm not sure, but i don't think so. still we always had the described problem fighting over the biggest field with 2 players.
perhaps we focus too much on that, both of us thinking it's the surest way to win. in the end, for us, it's more fun when we just count cities, roads and monastaries...

Try Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers. The tile distribution is not that dependent on capturing large fields and so allows for different strategies.

I think I agree with you.
With two players, I am placing 50% of the tiles, if we even move that up to three I am only placing 33% of the tiles, reducing my involvement in the game by twelve percent, and increasing the down time.
I will admit I have not tried with more than two, but with three players, I would honestly rather just play something else.

I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old. By the time I get them in bed at night I find that if I'm going to play a game it needs to be quick. (they go to bed between 7 and 8 but I get up at 4:30am for work) I find myself pulling this one out alot. A game takes less than 20 minutes. (There is a bit of a learning curve to get used to the iconography...but its not too bad) This game would not be my first choice if I were having a game night with lots of friends, but I really like the 2-player version. So this is usually the first choice for a quick game after the kids are in bed.

For 2-players I'd also try the '12 Tile per Player' variant. This shortens gametime considerably and makes for many more tough decisions. We've found that we've been able to squeeze in 2 games per every single game if all the tiles are used.

When our kids were a tiny bit younger, it was remarkable to get them both to sleep before we were ready for bed. So this "3 minutes across the USA" game fit in very well. And it's a good game to boot.

Sometimes we play games with our 9 month old on our lap. Our daughter's mission when doing so is to eat anything she can get her hands on and knock everything else off the table. Hive is great because:

1. The pieces are too large to be a choking hazard
2. The pieces are so substantial that they are harder to disrupt than a pile of chits or tokens
3. If she does knock over a piece, it's a lot easier to replace than if she sends a Small world board flying
4. It plays in less than a half hour

This is a quick and fun little game that you can take on the go. It plays (2 player) in 10-15 minutes. You can learn to play and have it dealt out in under 4 minutes.

We have a 4 month old as well as two older children, so I know where you are at.

BEST version of Monopoly if you are in a hurry - and I dare say even if you're not. This is a really good game - takes Monopoly and removes all the boring tedious parts leaving the soft chewy SCREW THE HELL OUT OF EACH OTHER MERCILESSLY center. arrrh

No not at all it is very light but adds just enough of the rent and property collecting that board game has. We had this for quite some time before we broke it out and were shocked at how fun it was.

To give us a break from Cribbage we will sit and play 3-4 games of this in a half hour or so. With 2p the game can sometimes end early because of only having to get 3 sets of properties to win but adding a house rule of needing 4-5 sets to win lengthens the game some. We have only played with 2p but I think it would be just as fun with more.

Highly highly recommended...plus it is like $5 at walmart how can you go wrong.

This is a fine little "press your luck" game that plays fast and can travel in a diaper bag! How cool is that?!?

Even if you are not a Monopoly fan, this game is pretty fun. Give it a try.meeple

The OTHER really good version of Monopoly - though I give "Deal" the better rating. This is a fun little time killer indeed and yes, it reminds me quite a bit of "Can't Stop!" and other press your luck type games. You could easily strip the Monopoly theme off of this game and it would be just as fun - not that having it there makes it any less so...

This one is in our suitcase. Portable, and doesnt have a box to get dented or wrecked. The problem is, the game kinda sucks. One lucky run with the dice and there is no way for your opponent to ever catch up.

Cool list, like it a lot. Though I have to admit I thumbed it even before reading through it. Bragging about having 219 thumbs in the opening was just too much for me to resist. Though after reading through it, I would have thumbed it anyway.

I'm amazed to find so many other people who have the same gaming handicap due to infants! Really glad I found this. I own some of these games and have never tried playing them - now I have a reason.
