There are quite a number of iPad GeekLists already. This one is a list of BGG games that are available for the iPad right now and can support multiple human players either locally or online, in real time or asynchronously. I invite others to add to this list by posting the iTunes URL:

Unless otherwise noted, all apps are officially licensed versions.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Information Key
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Picture: Will be iPad or iPhone/iPod Touch* version if available.

Clones: Games in the public domain (like Go, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon etc.) not under any particular copyright license usually have many clone versions available. This list shows only one entry for such games with a link to a separate Geeklist for those games.

Human Players: The number of human players the app can support. Including "1" indicates AI or solitaire is available.

Connection: The type of connection(s) supported between players.

Face to Face = players gather around iPad
Console Mode = I.e. main game runs on iPad and iPhones used for hidden info or controllers, effectively making the iPad a console unit
Pass n' Play = players take turns and pass device. Also known as "hot seat".
WiFi = players use multiple devices lan-style over local WiFi network
BlueTooth = players use multiple devices lan-style over BlueTooth network
Online Realtime = players play against online opponents
Online Asynchronous = players play against online opponents, taking their turn on their own time often after message notification (like play-by-email)

Seller/Developer Site: Seller or Developer Web site with more info

iTunes: The iTunes App Store URL

iPhone/iPod Touch: Indicates whether the game is also playable on the iPhone/iPod Touch, there is an iPhone/iPod Touch version, or whether app is a single Universal app which works on both devices.

No = iPad only
Yes = separate iPhone/iPod Touch app available
Universal = single app, works on iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch

Release, update, price tracking info on Appshopper.com: A link to the game on Appshopper.com, a great site for tracking app updates and prices.

VGG: A link to the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app version on VGG, if available.

*Note: All iPhone/iPod Touch apps run on the iPad.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Adding an Entry
------------------------------------------------------------------
Feel free to add an entry that meets the following conditions:

Post only the iTunes URL.
Only add an iPad board game if it is available NOW.
Only add an iPad board game if one of its multi-player modes can support 2 or more players in the same place on the same device.
Once you add a valid entry I will probably tip you 1 for your troubles and then delete and repost your entry with more complete information.

Played a few games. Seems really good but I am disappointed at the user interface (i am a interaction designer). I would say that most things you interact with are to small to be following interface guidelines. I would think it is therefore they implemented an undo button.

But very good otherwise. Love the animations and the little lights in the houses!

I bought the game when it came out. It does indeed have some graphical issues. I am not entirely sure why there is a picture of Puerto Rico in the background, but it is just flat green. No topography or interesting features on it at all. At that rate, don't bother to put the picture of the island in the background, and devote a little more real estate to the different buildings and plantations.

The AI seems pretty fine to me, as the opponents do indeed match their difficulty ratings. I'm struggling to think about any better way to show more of the information about the buildings and plantations, but having the question mark to drag over each item for a detailed description works great for me.

All in all, definitely worth the $8 I spent on it.

Thank you for at least attempting to suggest improvements. Getting tired of the "UI sux" clones.

My own suggestion is that I think they could have freed up some space to enlarge the buildings by turning the UI to portrait (in addition to landscape) and using more drawer-type pull outs ala the decks in Ascension.

I was wondering when someone would add it to your Geeklist

Once the random crashes are fixed, this will be the best "heavy" boardgame implementation on the iPad (& iPhone).

I prefer Puerto Rico to Caylus IRL. On the iPad, it's the opposite, Caylus looks nicer & neater.

I've played it asynchronously also. It doesn't allow invites though, so if you want to play with certain friends they need to be there waiting for the game to show up.

I agree. Caylus looks really good and plays great too. Puerto Rico seems a bit average in the looks department and I don't love dragging that question mark all over the place.

I don't have Puerto Rico to compare, but the Caylus implementation is horrible, IMO.

- The graphic design is poor - sometimes hard to tell where the provost is
- The UI is awful. WAY too many clicks to do actions, particularly when using certain buildings. And it has opposite functions for the "x" button depending on what screen you are on, which can be confusing at times when you are new, or just playing quickly.
- The AI is unbelievably stupid, and oh yea... it cheats! (or there is a bug that allows it build batches at the castle with fewer resources than required).

I must admit that I was a bit too enthusiastic about Caylus blush. Recent updates did not solve the major crashes & issues. It's sad because this game was really promising. Let's hope the next update is the good one!

It's pretty good. I haven't played the board game version before, so this app taught me the game. It took a few plays to really get it. The tutorial is okay, but only really laid out the rules. I have found that the best tutorials also give hints at what makes for good strategic play, but this app saves those hints for a separate "hint" option available in regular play. That makes the learning curve for this game a little higher than for some other apps, but still doable.

I like that the strategic hints are separate from the tutorial. Some of us prefer to discover the strategies ourselves through repeated plays as opposed to hints or reading strategy articles, etc.

Also, wouldn't mind seeing these guys port this over to Android... I'm not a huge fan of the crokinole app for my Droid - it isn't nearly as good as this app on iPhone.

Christine, that is definitely NOT normal behavior.

If that happens, you should disconnect all the players, close the app, and then restart the app and link everybody up again. Hopefully that will be enough to get it unstuck.

Either way, I'll keep my eye on it and hopefully I can figure out why. If you were to send me your device stats it might help me know what to look for.

Update: I have a test build that has fixed this problem for at least one person (still waiting on confirmation from others). I'm going to do a little more testing and, with luck, I'll submit it in a couple of hours.

If you'd like to help verify the fix, send me email: steve-at-housefullofgames-dot-com

Update on the update: Unfortunately, that fix I had yesterday is only a partial fix. It's a good thing I didn't rush to submit because we're still seeing some crashing with the test build. I'm hoping I can nail it down today.

Again, if you would like to help, feel free to send me email.

In the mean time, if you're seeing crashing, turning on airplane mode (assuming you can't or won't upgrade to iOS 4.2) should get you playing again.

Was a while since that post, but iPad version is available now.

The leaderboard of Small World is not quite good enough as it only shows the games with the highest scores for the winner. Sure, it is something, but different computer opponents, profiles and an ELO-type rating really does add a lot.

It should be noted that you can't have local multiplayer on Ticket to Ride. The online multiplayer is great, but locally you can only play 1 player with bots.

Yeah, but it's generally hardly playable as pass&play game on tablet, just as Bang!

I disagree. The wife and I had an incredibly pleasant 3-hour flight while playing it the whole way through. Oftentimes we'll play while watching TV as well. It's very well done.

Tried to get this running last night and gave up. The WiFi/Online screens just return blank lists, with no instructions on how to get a game going. Create and Join both returned the same thing. At the moment it's Dixit that you can't play - at least it was free

Has anyone played it with real people? How did you do it?

I managed to play it online the other night with real people. Unfortunately they were really slow to play and eventually someone quit and the game got abandoned. But it did work! One thing that I'm not sure if I like or not is you actually say your sentence/story into it and it records it. Then you hear all the other players. I think I would have rather just typing it in.

I have the same experience.
Just sitting and waiting for the game to be abandoned.

Writing down the word/sentence would be better.
Also if you could take turns while the others are off-line.
And playing outside a wifi connection would be great also.

I use to be a big fan of BattleLore. It's been a while, however, since I broke out my copy. A long set up time and newborn baby will do that to you. Make no mistake though, as far as I can tell, this game is BattleLore but without the Lore.

So far I've dabbled with both Campaign and Skirmish modes. Realtime Online looks promising, though I'm always hoping for asynchronous, even in a game like this. So far, it's been well worth the 3.99 I just paid. Pretty excited about this one.

The app is pretty fun, and the AI is decent. However, after playing it a bunch for a couple of days, it seemed like I saw pretty much all of the skirmish scenarios. I played the campaign through, and finished with victory. But it won't reset. Any time I go to the campaign mode, it starts me over again at that same eighth and final battle that I've won before.

This is just an iPhone game that plays at 2x, correct? Since an HD version in in beta right now, is there any incentive to get this one? (That is, is is like Carcassonne where I will get the iPad version free once it's released, or would I just be buying Catan twice?)

Brilliant implementation, 10/10 no doubt, but it's been ~2 months since the post from the developers, explaining (sort of) why it takes them a year to add at least first 2 game expansions... and since then dead silence again... seriously, when is the RiverII and Inns&Cathedrals finally ready ?

I'm afraid that playing against the AI would suffer from the same issues that Knights of Charlemagne had. There isn't much game "in the cards" here. It's all about pushing your opponent and getting into their head. Holding onto the card that you know they need, or flaunting the card you know they need by melding it into a formation where it's not nearly as important for you as it would be for them.

That's no fun against an AI.

Don't get me wrong, I'm off to buy it now.

PrinceHamlet wrote:
I bought this immediately, since it's one my favorite card games. I've bought many of the iPad board game implementations, and I'd say this is a good port in terms of controls, polish, user interface, and price. Here's my quick breakdown to help people decide if it's for them.

PRO
- Nice, simple design. Generally, not overcomplicated. I can get into a game quickly and play.
- Distinct colors, even if they are the same color palette as Fruit Loops. Seriously though, the usability of being distinct is more important to me than aesthetics, and these are distinct suits.
- Icons are on each suit for those who have color-blindness. Nice touch considering many developers ignore that.
- Fluid controls. You can play immediately and perform actions with ease.
- Rules are available at a touch (in an out of a game). Although I'd prefer the text to be much smaller on them for quick readability. As they are, you have to scroll through 20 large print pages to read all of them. Yes, I said 20! I'd suggest collapsing Troop card explanations onto one or two pages, for example and let the pinch control of the O/S handle enlarging text.
- Pass-and-play is nicely done with a screen prompting when the next user has the screen (to hide your cards until the user has the screen in front of them).
- Inexpensive price.
- Can play with or without Troop cards
- Can play your own music in the game.

CON
- AI could be better. It's serviceable on the higher of the two levels, but could be better.
- I'd like to see the yellow map background a little bit less busy (or an option to replace it with flat black). There's a bit too much visual noise there, although the cards do jump out regardless.
- Rules for a Troop card should be available by tapping a card. Instead, a player has to pause the game and read the lengthy rules to understand a card I'm not familiar with.

Overall, I'd say this is a well-made port, being that it's an inexpensive travel game. I'd like online play, which I read is coming. With that addition, I'd say this would be wonderful. As it is, I thought it was a $2.99 USA well spent.

Personally, I've glad to see Knizia's best (Ra is there, and Modern Art & T&E are coming) on electronic devices. Although I bet licensing might prevent it, I'd love to see "Lord of the Rings: Confrontation" come to this platform. That's a real gem of a game that I'd like to play more.

Weak AI, even with tactics cards. Though I'm not sure if the tactics cards are even implemented correctly. I played a Champion on a pair of 10's and the AI's 3 8's claimed the flag. At the end of that game the AI was left with no legal play and the game just sat their thinking about its next move (all the unclaimed flags had 3 AI cards). Plus it crashes regularly when I leave a game to check the rules and come back. Pretty disappointing implementation.

The update fixed a couple of bugs and made the AI at least a bit of a challenge on strong, but I still win more than 90% of my games against it.

It does not play the Companion Cavalry card correctly in a wedge(straight flush). The rules in the game say the card can be used to complete a flush or a set of 3 8's, but not a straight flush, however looking at the pdf of the GMT rules here it says the card can be used as an 8 of any color, so it should be able to be used as an 8 in a straight flush.

Yay, its out! It seems to be a decent implementation of a very good game. I'm getting a lot of crashes from this first version. It remembers where you were, so it's playable.

Well, that is not completely true.
I've never played Tikal, i've spent ~3 minutes reading the rules, beat the AI 3 times and decided to put aside the game for a while as I honestly don't enjoy a game where AI is dumber that me, the newbie. AI doesn't make any interesting tactical decisions, it's predictable, repetitive, actually it seems that it's just stuck as he easily repeats same moves for 3-4 turns in a row and looses x2-x3 by points at the end...

And graphics is also rather weak. Maybe the original design was ported, I don't know, but i'm used to something more smooth looking on iOS.

My first game, a 3 player with 2 bots, I played one easy bot and one medium level bot. .....2nd game, also 3 player, I choose 2 of the hardest bots. I think they are called KINGs.

Wow so after only 2 games, only one of which was played with maximum AI your ready to chime in that the AI sucks?

Try 4 player games with 3 KINGs each and report back after a minimum of 6 plays. Then you have the right to say the AI sucks IMHO.

I didn't say it sucked. Calm yourself. Again I'll say well done implementation. Congrats. Beautiful. And I'll stand by my comment that the ai is way too easy in the initial version.
Maybe you should consider playing it yourself before posting?

It's not obvious, but it's there.

In game, hit pause; at the menu select Rules, then Armies. You then have to use Back, Back, Resume Game to return to the board. Clunky but doable.

There is menu on the right middle part of the screen that has an "I" for "info" button that lets you then tap on any tile and see what it does.

There is now, yes, as Clawf1ng3r noted in a comment back in January. There wasn't in the version available last September when I wrote that comment.

Is this face-to-face or more like a pass-and-play? I understand that since it wasn't designed for the iPad specifically, there are many screens to scroll to view the necessary info.

When there is no hidden info in a game, I prefer to use the label "face to face" because all players can gather round the device and take turns while all players watch. Pass N' Play implies there is player-only info that must be hidden from the other players and therefore the device must be picked up and looked at by a single player each turn.

I heard from the developer, who said:

"After the new version was released we realized that a nasty bug wasn't discovered in testing. We had to pull the app from the store until a fixed version makes it through the approval process."

Apparently, this will be updated/fixed soon.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Give the free (ad-supported) version a try to see how you like it! There's a Disc Drivin' thread that has a list of people interested in playing the game, so you can find opponents that way.

it's not bad. reminds me of Roule ta Bille, a French beach game with marbles and cyclist figurines used as markers. turn based. first to flick their marble round a track built in the sand wins.

the power ups are a bit tricky to use and fall offs are frustrating. I play it asynchronously, and if it weren't that way able, it would be in the bin

I personally think it makes more sense to leave it the way it is, since that's the way the boardgame list is ordered. I'm usually less interested in lower ranked games and if the list was ranked alphabetically, you'd have other people annoyed that they have to look through the list to find the games that are ranked more highly. If it were possible to switch between them, that would be great, but if it has to be just one, I prefer the present layout.

High on many user's lists for improvements to GeekLists is in how they can be sorted and by whom. I support a feature to make GeekLists custom-sortable by each individual user. You should be able to sort GeekLists they way YOU want, because it's highly likely that for every one person who wants to sort one way, there are four more people who want to sort four different other ways.
