People's love for particular games can be attributed to a number of factors; the games mechanics, its theme, the company developing it, or even the designer behind its design. It can be one specific aspect that draws their attention, or a mixture of many that drive them to make that inital purchase.

For me, it's my inherent need to collect and find games that bring out the inner child inside of me, and the most common way for me to experience that moment between Wishlist and Wantlist is to discover "What Comes Inside the Box".

I developed this ongoing series of Videos to give users like myself an opportunity to see, in Full HD, what they will be purchasing before they make either a good or regretful purchase.

I am not a journalist, or someone who is at all intimate with the intricacies of Video Editing. I basically went out, bought a Camcorder and some Software, and just started filming. I am a Gamer through and through and do this only as an honest attempt to help other like-minded gamers whom might likewise feel in the dark about what to purchase and what they might wish to avoid. The most honest way to do this is to just speak how I feel and allow for the Camcorder to pick out the details of these games that I bring to you in Full HD.

Before we start, I would like to invite everyone to see my current game room. It's not much, but I try to keep it organized and a place that my friends and family can enjoy.

Drakkenstrike's Top 10 Games of 2010

Well Over 60 Man Hours have gone into this Video Montage of my personal Favorite Board Games that were released in 2010. It includes 95% Brand New footage of games using a montage of Introductions, Music and Multiple Camera Angles to tell their stories. Once again, I am letting the images and music that you watch and listen to speak for themselves.

Due to multiple issues with Youtube and their Copyright Laws for WMG (Warner Music Group), I had to utilize Vimeo once again, but only for this End of the Year Video.

Please note that several games made my list, and some, although great, did not make the list. All lists such as these are merely opinions, and should not be labeled as definitive in any way, as these are just my favorites of those I was able to play prior to planning and eventually filming this Video. I chose my Games based on a variety of factors up to and including each games Components, Playtime, Fun Factor, Visual Appeal, Artistry, Mechanics, and so on.

Great review as always.I thought you might touch on pirates raiding merchants (merchant tokens that is) more and how the card/ dice mechanic works for it, which I thought was pretty nifty.

Anyway, played a 2-player game already. It was really, really fun. I took the Merchant route and enjoyed that a lot.

Just wanted to add my thanks for this great review, the intro & presentation quality in your video's now is top-notch and a great bonus in your overall review setup - keep up the great work!

On the basis of the Merch & Marauders review I've gone ahead and bought it, a few other reviews I'd read or video's I'd seen had left me on the fence as a "maybe" but your review pretty much sealed the deal... I'm still waiting on it being delivered but am pretty sure that it'll be a hit!

Cheers

Btw, do you have any lists or hints as to upcoming or planned reviews for the future that we can keep our eyes on to look forward to?

Im curious as to which game you prefer, Merchants & Marauders or Cyclades. Do you see one hitting the table more than the other. I'm thinking of purchasing one or the other, and I'm curious if one is much better than the other.

I love both....too hard of a decision for me, especially since they are vastly different of one another.

I know you were asking Jeremy, but in my humble opinion Merchants and Marauders is a bit deeper. Don't get me wrong...I think Cyclades is an excellent title. I just think I will burn out on it much quicker than I will on M&M. It's the downside of Cyclades' fairly simplistic ruleset.

That of course could change depending on what the expansion brings to the table...

Tikal I was at its heart a very abstract game with beautiful graphics, and a theme which was supported by game play. Tikal II seems the same, but as you said, if your strategies don't pan out in the end, what's the point?

Great looking video and nice review. As always, you let me get a good idea of if I'd like the game.

This game is super-confrontational. And the penalties for the user are nearly total, completely killing your character and forcing you to restart. Not a good game for someone with a bad temper.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I think we will start him off with something more easy-going.

Wow, I'm kinda dumb. I was reading this as a reply to the Merchants & Marauders review. Survive! is also confrontational, but the part about the penalties is not accurate.

In the case of Survive! however, I would say that being confrontational is where all the fun comes from. If someone can't enjoy killing each others' pieces, there's not much left to the game.

A few thoughts.

The more I read about this game the more I realize I need a deck building game. The one thing that holds me back is the card layout. I like the artwork, but the layout keeps holding me back, but I keep thinking about this one quite a bit.

I realize I have RftG, but that isn't as popular with my friends as I wish. This would probably get more play time.

I really don't care for the art in Dominion either. It just doesn't capture me.

Unlike some of the Dominion expansions, I think Thunderstone better hits the expansion sweet-spot of adding just enough of what we already had (that is, expanding the SIZE of the game prior to setup) and giving us something new (expanding the DEPTH of the game with new rules/card types). Thunderstone did both well twice, but IMO Dominion did it once with Prosperity, while Seaside and Alchemy are focused too much on the second type of expansion (Intrigue isn't just an expansion).

Vinhos is a heavy Euro style strategy game that places its players squarely in the middle of the wine industry in Portugal. The game carries with it a series of complex, intermingled system of mechanics that all work together to present it's players with numerous options and possibilities for victory. Although it may be one of the more difficult rule sets to first digest, repeat sessions will open up all of the games nuances to those who delve deep enough.

Hi there,

Just finished watching your video component of Vinhos. Its almost identical to that of Grand Cru because both games center in the wine industry. But there are some differences, Grand Cru takes places in France whereas in Vinhos its in Portugal. In Grand Cru players can make up to 5 different wines whereas in Vinhos players can only make 2 different wines: red and white, just to name a few.

You're right about one thing in Vinhos, it is a difficult game for newbies like me. Although I am so awe about the board that its so artistic.

Anyway thanks for the video and we'll be looking forward to more videos to come in 2011.

Love this game, bought just two months ago, gets better every time.
The game was taught by the author, and signed it for me. Super cool.
I'll be playing CO2 prototype in April with Vital Lacerda, which will probably the second game published by him. Great designer.
And Jeremy keep doing what you do, you're the best reviewer in BGG.

The Phantom League is a 2-6 player space exploration game that benefits from a unique mechanic that both rewards and sometimes punishes formal alliances with other players, yet suffers from a mostly convoluted and cumbersome battle system. The Phantom League definitely plays best with a full compliment of participants.

Hey Jeremy,

This looks like a very deep game. How often do you see this one hitting the table? I am trying to decide if this is a fit for my gaming group. We play everything but usually a game that easily supports 3 or more players.
This really seem like a two player game to me even though it says it supports more.

My guess would, learn this game as a 2 player game, and then once all people understand all aspects of the game, you could have a lot of fun in the S.A.G.S 3/4 player system. The game just really suits itself to being learned in 2 player through the scenarios.

For an example, check out my first game with my wife Here - she picked it up quite well. Trying to learn the game just all at once with more than one other person might be a tad bit hard.

I have to admit that it was a challenge trying to play the game. I went straight to scenario 2 after being taught the game. I think it's a great game. The price of admission, unfortunately, is much too high for my game group. I wish I had the time to learn the game because it looks awesome and it reminds me of final fantasy tactics.

Here's to hoping someone can come up with a stream-lined version that fits with my gaming group's level.

If you are looking for a streamlined board game RPG experience, you might want to check out the recently released Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon Board Game.

With an average weight of 3.7, the difficulty of this game should have been pretty obvious. You won't find very many streamlined/simplified RPG-like games with a medium-heavy weight.

If you're set on playing this game, just don't include all the rules. There is nothing stopping you from excluding some rules of the game that you find more difficult. One could leave out duels, for example. While that would change (dampen, most likely) the experience of the game, I doubt it would make it unplayable.

3 player rocks with this game. Playing the SAGS, of course. Everyone having their own secret objectives, makes a very compelling experience. Only tried it once though, so gameplay may vary with different objectives of course.

Cosmic Encounter is a game of constant table talk and player interaction where participants are continually encouraged to bluff, double-cross, lie and even force their will upon their opponents. It's uncontrollable and highly unpredictable nature may not be for everyone, but those willing to forgive the random, even chaotic nature of the game will most certainly find pieces to enjoy within its structure.

Jeremy, this review takes your reviews to a whole new level. The cross-dissolving photos during the description were fantastic. The player perspective look at cards and game play is brilliant. Your description was more concise and clear than ever before--I appreciated the more structured approach to the rules and game play explanation. And your intro and other effects were perfectly smooth and well timed.

Bravo. Fantasy Flight--and all other publishers for that matter--should hire you.

Thanks again!

Jeremy it is a pleasure to watch your breakdowns. They keep on getting better and better each time. Your editing of music and video, rules and play explanation and staging of these excellent products has improved dramatically.

Thanks once again for all the hard work.

I am glad as I am sure others are too that I have the willpower to resist purchasing games I do not have the time or other willing players to play them with. Otherwise I would have bought over half the games I have watched your Breakdowns on!

This game may be a Must Buy, Drakkenstrike's Components Breakdown Series is most definitely a Must See.

For those interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the gameplay, I have submitted a lenghty in-depth review and strategy guide. This is my first review...which I have been working on for a while.

A Comprehensive Review and Strategy Guide by a Playtester / Creative Development Contributor.

Thanks.

Great review! And an amazing video production - listened to you on the GameOn! podcast recently talking about the effort that goes into these videos - wow. I feel you really have developed your skills to the point where, i dont know how you could make these videos any better ?? (only maybe shorter, sometimes a little to bogged down in rules, more focus on overall gameplay and components)

But definitely the most enjoyable and well produced board game videos on the net (on par with the FFG videos and I'm sure they spend loads of resources on them) - so please keep it up

But regarding MoM - I was wondering about your thoughts on the setup of the game - i mean, when you start a game, all of the tiles are laid out, so that the investigators know exactly where all the rooms, hidden tunnels, crypts etc are ... this to me is the most disappointing part, i thought that at least it was enough for the Keeper to know the full layout but the investigators would have to "explore", at least in a fixed way.
Possibly the full pre-game layout is to save on downtime, so that time is not wasted while the Keeper, mid-game finds the necessary tile and adds it to the map ... but i was thinking, if the Keeper is prepared before the game starts, then it wouldn't add that much downtime, and i feel would help to give a more immersive experience, a feeling of exploring a mansion, rather than knowing, yeah, there's the bathroom over there, and the bedroom and kitchen are over there...

I was worried about this the first time I played, but then, after playing a couple of times, realized that if the investigators don't see the full map, they have almost NO chance of winning. The timed events don't really allow for random exploration. When you find a clue, you really have to go straight for the place the clue suggests. If that place wasn't already visible (laid out on the table), the investigators would spend too much time trying to find it.

Jeremy,

Another excellent video...as always. I have yet to try out a deduction game, and this one certainly looks easy to step into. Have you played other similar games, such as Scotland Yard, Mystery Express, etc? If so, how would you compare the experience?

Thanks again, keep those videos rollin'....

Mystery Express is more like Clue, in which players compete to deduce a common "puzzle." Scotland Yard, Fury of Dracula and Letters from Whitechapel are competitive in nature, which is a very different sort of deduction. Multiple players are trying to deduce the location of a single player and use that information to catch them, while the single player attempts to confuse and elude the pursuers.

This makes the game something more/different than deduction. Deduction is a tool to be used by the hunters, but is not the whole game. The game is more about pursuit and capture opposed by misdirection. There are distinct strategies, whereas more pure deduction games use processes.

I was just researching this game yesterday and lamenting that there were no videos yet. I ended up reading EndersGame Pastiche Review it is really well done and has lots of great images, but I'm lazy and much prefer to just watch a video.
Another excellent video, keep up the good work.

This game looks wonderful and is now at the top of my buy list. The theme and components look great. The game play looks easy to pick up but with a depth of strategy, just how I like it.

Excellent work. I don't know how you do it. Really I don't, technically. But, you also explain the game so perfectly that I don't need a rulebook. One less rules set for me to read, the better.

It's a good overview of the rules, and a great way to learn the game, but do make sure you're aware of two glitches in the explanation:

1. Palette cards in hand only score points at the end of the game if they can be used towards a commission card in hand.
2. The game does not end immediately when a player gets the required number of points, but the round continues so all players get an equal number of turns.

Don't worry. Sean wouldn't let me get away with playing it wrong.

Huh. Well after disabling his own website, I am surprised that he hasnt just deleted all of his videos from youtube as well. By that I mean if you are going to do one, why not the other?

I really hope he doesnt though. it really sucks when a poster decides to leave this site AND take everything they have every contributed with them.

It is not only annoying to people doing research, but is just kind of a snot nosed brat thing to do in most cases.

I hope he gets everything straightened out satisfactorily for him. It sucks when any member leaves a community, regardless of what they contribute.

It's completely his right to do what he wants with his own creative material
"Snot nosed brat" seems ridiculously harsh.Maybe you might want to rethink that one.

I did not say it was not within his right. It is his content he shared and he can do whatever he pleases with that.

But if you have been on this site for any length of time, you would know exactly how annoying it is that when researching stuff, you will find large blank areas when prolific posters have deleted their account.

Reviews, sessions reports, etc. that make large portion of threads, etc. make no sense unless another poster had quoted them for posterity.

I do not begrudge him taking his stuff down. Like I said it is his contributions he can do with them as he pleases. I only remark on that since deleting content is counter productive to the community as a whole. This whole point of this site is a database resource after all.

So no, I do not want to rethink that one. Not even a little.

When most people delete their accounts, they are doing the same thing as "taking their game and going home so no one else can play with it." I have yet to see a logical reason for anyone to delete their contributions on this site for anything other than spite.

That's not to say that there isn't a logical reason, but I have yet to see one that doesn't involve spite.

But this is all purely academic anyways. Jeremy hasn't deleted his youtube stuff. He has only shut off his website.

I'm locking the comments here. Jeremy's motives are his own. I respect the decision he feels is in his best interest. His geeklist is not the place to question that, IMO, and there is certainly no place on BGG for anyone to attack him or any other user for personal decisions about what to do with the content they own.

If Jeremy continues this list at a later date the comments will be unlocked then.

Thanks to everyone who participated in a constructive fashion.
