The Shelving Moment

When I used to be active on the "Game Illuminati" forums, there was a lot of talk of "Shelving Moments". It's the moment in the game that occurs that causes you to take the and put it back on the shelf never to be played again. Feel free to share your favorite (or least favorite) shelving moment - and what caused you to arrive at that point.

I think I have only hit this after 4 hours into the game. The main plotline is on a timer, and if you don't complete various things by the deadline it's "Game Over." There are only 3 save slots in this game, and I seem to have painted myself into a corner where it appears that I must start again from the beginning
Welcome to my shelf Dead Rising 2.

The Tranquility Lane mission. The mission is required to beat the game and has only two possible outcomes, both of which infuriated me.

I got this used, so it was mega cheap. Even still, it really didn't matter. The tutorial was so bad, I eventually just exited out and started experimenting. So after two pick up games, I start a campaign. After struggling to get a decent dwarf team constructed and experience is starting to roll in, I started a new tournament and in the first round I get an elf team for the first time. My experienced dwarves make minced meat out of 'em, killing many and generally just walking all over them (altho they did get in a lucky goal right at the beginning). Then two rounds later and I'm in the finals of that same tournament, and it's against the elves again. Their roster should be devestated. This time the elves are given a major balance adjustment and I don't think I made a single tackle. Obviously my grind 'em down approach doesn't work very well against scores that happen in two turns. But it was that moment that all the shitty control issues, the utter lack of options, and the generally horrible way that this game was designed made me shelve it...

Looks like I need to start contributing to the VGG database, because I can't even find an image for this game...
Anyways, I bought this game with a lot of excitement because I love football video games and it was supposed to integrate the motion of the Wii into the system. I expected I was going to walk back like Peyton Manning, hold the Wii remote like a football, and thrust it at my receiver in a football type of motion. Instead it was simply a forward flick while holding a button for the intended receiver.
But the real shelving moment came next. I played a novice game first, and went on to win by at least 60 points. So I cranked it up a couple notches to the All-Pro difficulty, and still won by a ton. Finally I set it to All-Madden, the level that should be so ridiculously hard it's not even funny. I won by over 30 points, and if I made more aggressive play calls I could have won by even more. And this was in a game where I played the Lions against the Colts!
If the AI offers no challenge, what possible reason do I have to keep playing? Say hello to the shelf Madden 09 All-Play, I hope your more recent counterpart offers a better experience.

Technically it wasn't "shelved" as it's an XBLA game, but yeah. There's a boss battle against a robot that takes up the full screen and requires timing patterns more complicated than I cared to figure out for an otherwise fun light platformer.

After the second stage battle I couldn´t stand the annoying controls anymore. I still liked the action-RPG sections of the game, but there was no point in putting up with the awkward RTS parts for the rest of the game.

My arachnophobia might not keep me from playing Hive, but the giant spiders in this one made me uncomfortable enough to stop playing the game when they first appeared.

At some point the story stops and tells you...now go collect 13(?) pieces of triforce scattered through this world, but to do that, you first need maps or something which you also have to find.
I was like f*ck you game! And shelved it! I absolutely hate collection missions...

For this game, it was when I got to a point where Mario and Luigi have to do some platforming, but they depend on Bowser being in front of an X-ray machine to see the platforms.
But only sometimes. Sometimes Bowser has to not be in front of the machine.
It got too frustrating trying to do all of that and I shelved it. It was fun for a while, but when it wasn't fun anymore, it's not worth my time.

There's no one moment in particular which made me 'shelve' the game, rather a final understanding that this is simply put a boring as hell RTS and there's not a bit more of fun I get out of it. It happened to be around the third mission of the Saladin campaign, with two or three skirmish games in between the previous campaign missions.
For some more insights on what put me off, have a look at the link below, I list most of the irritating stuff.

Alright, I'm cheating a bit, because although I technically 'shelved' the game in a matter of 10 minutes or so, I do intend to get back to it at some point.
I mention often that I'm easily scared by video game, and even the cheapest scare tactics (like the one Doom 3 uses) work for me. You can probably imagine that I spent most of my Dead Space playthrough sweating and panting, playing short sections of the game (no longer than 30 minutes) at a time and taking long breaks in between sessions. I couldn't stand the atmosphere and the way the game puts you on edge all the time. After this one INTENSE section, when I had to fight off a lot of enemies and then run away at a timer, I saved successfully, but was really stressed out. For some reason, I loaded a previous save (I think it was to check which was which), and then saved again... deleting my progress through that god-awful section.
The save labelling system is to blame. Seriously, no option to name your saves PLUS the fact that the timer which shows the saving moment go busted at one point and showed numbers which didn't tell me ANYTHING... And the fact that the Difficulty arbitrarily changed from Easy to Normal - and that change was quite visible... both of these made me instantly throw a tantrum, copy my save games and delete the whole thing out of my hard drive with the words "F**K that game, NEVER AGAIN".
But, as I said, I'll probably have a go at this some time in the future. For now it's the shelve for you, Dead Space, and may that be a lesson to any and all games which do not allow me, the player, to save wherever I goddamn please...

I can't remember the exact moment this game crushed my spirit, but it was very early on and I found myself choking on this kind of "Pop Video" cut-scene that made me gasping for breath and afraid for my sanity. Maybe I was just a little over dramatic back when I played it, but it still haunts me.

When I read "Try not to level up, because the enemies get harder the higher your level is. This is particularly bad in the main story missions where you need help from NPCs, and the enemies get tougher, but the NPCs don't.
A big part of the fun of the rpg experience is supposed to be improving your character,
