These are great platformers, across the earlier generations of consoles.

I don't mean this to be exclusively older platformers, I was just acknowledging I haven't personally put any seventh generation platformers on the list. Feel free to add them yourself!
(I would feel silly adding Braid or Limbo for example, having never played them.)

A simple, fun platformer that isn't old at all but is designed kind of to feel as if it is. Excellent music, too.

Sadly the controls are a little 'roller-skatey', but not enough that it bothered me all too much. An excellent and very fun game, highly recommended to any platformer fan.

Another great indie platformer (metroidvania style). This one is a bit easier than several of the other good ones, but I still found it quite enjoyable even though I love much harder stuff like VVVVVV or Super Meat Boy too.

Question: How hard or fun could a platformer possibly be if you only use one single key to play it?

Answer: Give Saut a try and find out for yourself.

I felt like there was some lost potential with the story in this game, but the gameplay is a lot of fun. It's a race for your life against a rising torrent of hot magma, with the music nicely changing in volume to compliment the intensity. The game is quite short, but I found it very fun and the right level of difficulty.

An indie run-and-gun platformer. I didn't love this one as much as I had hoped and expected to (considering a lot of indie platforming fans consider it only 2nd to Cave Story), but it is still a good, enjoyable experience. Being less aggressive and killing fewer enemies vs killing everything in sight will result in different behavior from your character and changes to the story.

I liked this one better than Cave Story, personally. Something about this one really grabbed me.

An indie puzzle platformer (can you tell I'm a fan of indie platformers yet? ) based around changing which direction is down (that is to say, changing the direction of gravity). Quite enjoyable.

If you like this game, you might also like Jumpman (it's free):

(No relation to the old classic Jumpman that you can find on this site.)

Edit: Though if you are not a fan of "roller skatey" controls . . . .

A very easy-going exploration game. You mostly just casually explore the world collecting little orbs. Honestly I wouldn't really expect to like a game with that description, but it is a charming and enjoyable experience =)

(Make sure you get the chiptune soundtrack; it's 3rd party so the creator isn't directly including it with the game anymore AFAIK, but it is very good.)

This was originally created for an H.P. Lovecraft-themed contest. Some of the other entries are also worth a look.

A definite improvement over the original Contra primarily because of the vastly improved controls. A fun game to speed run - turn on the lives cheat with a few friends and see who can beat the game the fastest =)

Definitely one of the best platformers in history. It's a shame that none of the sequels or remakes came close to measuring up.

I have to confess that I never beat the game. I reached the final area (after leaving the NES on for days) but died before finding the boss.

This is one of my favorite NES games. I love the mechanics of feeding candy to the friendly animals in exchange for their help. It's quite challenging too.

Abuse is an old, yet awesome 2D platformer. It was dark, creepy, had an interesting and simple control scheme, and was highly reminiscent of ALIENS. It also comes with a great WYSIWYG-style editor so you can make your own levels.

Based on this list, it's obvious to me that I really dislike most platformers of this specific type.

I did like Voodoo Vince which I found extremely impressive in every way (voice-acting, sound, clever gameplay, good graphics, cool theme/story & setting) AND I also think Psychonauts fits the bill in that regard as well. Everything else is just a pale shadow of them.

I own Psychonauts, and based on what I have read it belongs on the list. But I haven't played it and have feelings about not adding to recommendation lists games I have not played yet.
