Boomshine is a fairly simple game, so not a lot of replay value, but it's a lot of fun and worth the experience. The music is great, and it's relaxing.

Upgrade Complete
A very simple shooter, I'm not sure it's possible to lose. Interesting for the way it's set up, and the choices you can make in presentation and your ship, there are a number of different things to try out here.

Play Super Mario Bros with characters from other NES games (e.g. Contra, Castlevania, Megaman, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Zelda, Blaster Master). The music for the levels are from the NES game of the character you play as. The game cannot be added to the database because it breaks VGG's rule on IP infringement, but it is my favorite flash game ever:
SUPER MARIO BROS CROSSOVER
If you have seen it before, you should still check it out, as it has been updated multiple times with additional features and characters.
The latest update was just a couple months ago; you can now play as the tank from BLASTER MASTER, and Samus can collect and use missiles (enemies drop them sometimes).
If you are a NES game fan, you need to play this game NOW.

Less of a puzzler than Depict1, but easily the better art game. The platforming gameplay itself is challenging at places, and the choices you make throughout the game have real effects on the environment. And this drives the story, the interpretation, of the game.
Trigger warning: abusive (but not vulgar) language and abusive relationships (depending on your interpretation)

In The Asylum: Psychiatric Clinic for Abused Cuddly Toys, you take on the role of the psychiatrist in a mental asylum. Your patients? Abused cuddly toys. Through various therapeutic methods, your goal is to help your patients confront their past traumatic experiences. But understanding and care is necessary for successful treatments, because choosing the wrong options could result in a relapse, psychotic episode, or worse.
The gameplay of The Asylum is simple and straightforward. You see each patient in the examination room. Select a treatment or diagnosis option from your clipboard. As you progress, different options will become available to you. After each selection, you will be treated to a short animated clip. And hopefully your Therapy Progress bar will grow!
Despite the cuddly toy theme, this game contains traumatic images and is not suitable for young children.

I know a lot of people aren't fond of this, but I like it. The repetitive gameplay and stark, monochromatic graphics are what make this game work. It makes the breaks in that tedium all the more moving.
I particularly liked the office scene (the first time), the cow scene, and the final scene (quite eerie). The elevator lady is nice, too.

You never said anything about them needing to be free.

Though the gameplay itself is pretty straightforward, I enjoy exploring the lushly atmospheric world created by the designers, and that really is the meat and potatoes of this game. The entire game's art direction is evocative and consistent, from the rich environments and quirky characters to the superb musical score and (many of) the puzzles.

This is a nice, relatively light city-building/land-development game. Despite relatively few types of land "improvements," ranging from mines to different kinds of power plants to airports to campsites and other attractions, ElectroCity has surprising variation and subtle depth to make it enjoyably strategic and fairly replayable. There are a number of nuances to not only which things you choose to build, but in what order.

One of very few good multiplayer flash games, Kongai ( http://www.kongregate.com/games/Kongregate/kongai) was also the predecessor to Yomi. It employs a fairly clever rock-paper-scissors system where you have 3 characters each with 4 attack moves.as well as the option to rest for energy, switch to another character, or attempt to intercept the opponent's switch.
The downside is that you need to collect characters and items (either from playing or completing 'challenges' on Kongregate) to build your deck how you want. The plus side is that everything is pretty solidly balanced and skill is a lot more important than card selection, so a random deck will do plenty well for a long time. (Tip: card drops are higher when you have under 10 cards, so don't choose your starting 3 cards until you already won 10.)

Easily my favorite Flash game, one of the best games of 2010, and genuine proof that Flash games don't need to be mediocrity targeted at only casual gamers. Only $5 on Steam, and there is a demo available online: http://www.kongregate.com/games/TerryCavanagh/vvvvvv-demo.
Edit: I suppose I should also comment on the gameplay, eh? It's a fairly difficult platformer game (say, harder than New Super Mario Wii but easier than Super Meat Boy) with a charming world and an excellent chiptune soundtrack. There are very frequent checkpoints so you're rarely re-doing much, and the hardest parts of the game are optional (only required to collect trinkets rather than beating the main game), so the difficulty shouldn't be TOO daunting for most.

I'm not sure how I missed this one on my first pass! Really quite a good serious game that plays a bit like a casual game. You are an oil baron, manipulating the world economy for your gain and greasing politicians' palms to act in your interest. It has a nice economic simulation component, and a fantastic theme song.

The Codex of Alchemical Engineering - http://www.kongregate.com/games/krispykrem/the-codex-of-alch...
What I love most about this game is the music. It is by some French indie composer and absolutely beautiful ( http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/4383). It also fits the game very nicely.
The game itself is a sort of programming/puzzle game, where you put down various components and give them a repeating program they execute in order to move stuff around and complete an objective. Part of the fun is just watching a completed machine work its magic - I definitely spent some time making things run smoother and more visually interesting rather than going on to the next level =)
You can also easily save and share your programs. I still have a file with my solutions and some of the other fun ones I'd found - http://it-is-law.com/dump/Codex%20of%20Alchemical%20Engineer...

I've already added a couple, but most are tough to add. They usually don't list developers, publishers or even release dates on their credits, so filling out that form becomes a nightmare with these small Flash games.

Yeah, it is hard. Occasionally there will be a developer credit, or there will be a splash screen. Sometimes for release date I've had to resort to using the earliest dated occurrence I could find of the game online.
