I liked the idea of knowing beforehand what game was available to play on the following week, as happened with 30th June and Florenza.

I suggest therefore that we put up ONE game (a different game each week) that will be available for play the following week. Players do not need to play this game as others will be available on an ad-hoc basis as usual, but at least it gives players something to look forward to.

In view of us being at Paul's house and it being one of Paul's favourites. I suggest Caylus for 7th July, and then someone else can suggest a game for 14th July, and so on...

THURSDAY 7th JULY

Eight players turned up for the evening. First out was Agricola.
Will, Mark, Nigel and Johnny settles down to a four player session of this excellent game.
It was a first time for Johnny, and he came a creditable joint second, enjoying the game immensely.
Even the fourth player kept in touch, throughout the game, not playing the starvation strategy this timeshake
As we expected Mark won comfortably with 45 points, a hugh score even for him.

Dave and Steve decided on a series of two player games.

Steve's luck on the night was appaling, losing eight games to one.

Or was it Dave's good play.

A combination of Dave's good play, good deck building and my appalling luck.

The deck I was losing badly with, has now been amended. I'll also try not to shuffle all of one particular type of card to the top of my deck, to give me a chance next time.

Paul and Tony settled for this Columbia block wargame. Tony played the English and did well until late in the game, when within two moves Paul turned the whole game around and nearly caused Scottish independance.laugh

Both players enjoyed the experience.

Wallace's move first ability when defending makes him hard to trap and he proved elusive. With a high cost of crossing the Scots border Tony missed making full use of all the castles up to Mentieth allowing me to clear him from the north and then concentrate on coming south. Moray betrayed me during the 5th or 6th year but was back in the Scots camp before the end of the year. There were a couple of opportunities to crown a king but the cost of defecting nobles is very high so I didn't take them.

With Agricola finished, Mark, Johnny, Nigel and Will settled down to this local group favourite.

Everyone had played this before, but it was still Mark's night and he won again, despite walling in his Alhambra fairly early and giving himself no opportunity to expand

Nigel went NLA again

6. Board Game: 7 Wonders: Leaders [Average Rating:7.98 Unranked] [Average Rating:7.98 Unranked]

THURSDAY 14th JULY
Seven gamers turned up to play, and so 7 Wonders, with the keaders expansion and the Mannequin Promo board came out to play.

Martin took the Mannequin board and made best use of it, especially as he played very few resources, severely limiting his neighbours' plans. However he managed to bring up the rear by a couple of points.

Don took Rome and with a good starting set of leaders emphasises leadership play, using only those resources that he needed to play his leaders. This strategy won him the game.laugh

Leaders changes the nature of the game, and more plays will be needed to get to grips with this expansion.

All seven players wanted to play together again rather than split into two games (or was it that everyone was too lazy to move chairs?)

And so Red Dragon Inn came out with the latest expansion. Nigel, playing Eve, managed to avoid notice and any targetting to win the game.

The Pixie and Potion Maker do add an extra dimension to this game with their extra decks, but we need to play this - like 7 Wonders Leaders - to get a handle on the expansion.

Knowing I was likely to lose early (always seems to happen in this game) my approach was to avoid last place, so Martin lost the last of his cash just before I did and was thrown out having tipped the wench with the last of his readies.

Martin then introduced us to the card game Resistance. As a seven player game this became an exercise in loud logical deduction and name calling. A bit like a parliament! ninja

After a first play, in which the good guys (Paul, Nigel, Johnny and Mark) won, we had another go and then the bad guys won (Martin, Don and Paul) Leavign Paul the overall winner having been on the winning side in both games, and - me - the overall loser having been on the losing side in both games.

THURSDAY 21st JULY - Nine gamers turned up to play.

First off the shelves was the venerable game Wallenstein.
Steve, Don, Tony and Will set down to play the game, it being Tony and Don's first game and Will and Steve not having played for many months.

The game went more quickly than I remembered with very little inter player agression until the second year. Each player had a story to tell, with Steve not being able to harvest enough food and constantly battled revolts, Tony being particularily peaceful, not even conquering empty adjacent counties. Don played a balanced game of some agression and some building. Will tries to monopolise the northern territories but suffered 4 deafets trying to conquer just one area (which is a lot out of 6 turns).

In the end Will won, with Don second and Johnny third.

Paul, Dave, Mark, Nigel and Johnny pulled out this club favourite. It was a first time game for Nigel and Johnny.

Despite this Johnny managed to pull ahead in the first turns of the game, still being a long way in front right up until the last turn.

Then Dave and Mark made their finishing sprints with Mark finishing out on top.

Even though Nigel lost (not really surprising in a first try of a game of this complexity) he still enjoyed the game enormously.

First out of the box and into the conservatory was Troyes.

Paul, Dave, John and Mark settled down to play this game.

Dave had to explain the rules as everyone else hadn't played before.
Everyone enjoyed this game, and Dave, unsurprisingly, won.

Once I'd been reminded I could change my dice with influence my rolls of 2,2,1,1,1 suddenly turned far more interesting. 5 out of 6 rolls ended up with dice less than 3.5 on average - if it didn't happen every dice game it would be funnier! At least with Troyes the dice rolling can be mitigated well. Much better than Kingsburg IMHO and I look forward to playing again.

Firstly well done to Dave for a convincing win.cry

I also suffer from the fact that 'Dice Hate Me' as does Paulcry, but I also enjoyed this game and look forward to playing it again as your dice can be both manipulted and bought from other players.

16 25 34 43 52 61

Scoring during the game is kept secret, and there are many different strategies that can be adopted. Each player is also given a secret objective scoring card ninja, however each other player will also score from this at game end, with six card and 4 players 2 of the six will not active and so you have to try to calculte which other players have.

Overall a very enjoyable worker placement, dice activation game, that due to the large differences you can get between which points scoring cards and building cards can come out makes this a game on my 'to buy list'.

Thanks for such an excellent game gents. This really is a very subtle beast. I like the fact that you're never short of a meaningful action in this game. Would I buy it- possibly, would I play it- definitely.

Will, Joerg, Fohnny, Martin and Nigel meanwhile settled down to another new game to the club. Will explained the rules but manaed to get teh game started before anyones brain hurt

Nigel took the wall strategy and was doing well with it, until teh wall segments ran out and he found he had limited options for more vistory points.

Johnny took an early lead, but when Joerg and Martin bought bigger boats the race for the victory was down to them. Joerg thought the two sea space strategy was flawed and concentrated on gettign his ships back into play quicker. Martin went down the longer sea voyage route and won by two points.

Everyone enjoyed the game.
