How did you keep the wraith and blazing skeleton transparent but also change their color?

With the wraith I didn't prime it and just painted the clothing and the base with 2 coats of flat black paint then gave it a gray wash taking care to keep the hands clean as I wanted the blue see through look. I figured without the primer it might start cracking down the road but that would look spooky as well so win/win. The blazing skeletons where much easier as I bought them that way as someone was selling the D&D minis on e-bay and I didn't want to mess around with ink painting which is the way I suspect they where painted to keep the transparent look, just needed to retouch the D&D paint job a little.
