I finally broke down and bought some inks just to see if how hard it was to change the light blue to flames and still remain translucent. It was surprising easy. I didn't prime it or dunk it in anything just straight up put the ink on the blue and after two coats it looked pretty good, I knew I was going to backlight it so I put some orange and red inks in as well as the yellow. Looks too dark if not back lit so I would recommend just using yellow and light orange for day to day play

I like the translucent quality of some of the minis and if I paint them, don't want to lose them. I'd go for a blue flame though, similar to the original plastics. Gives it a ghostly look, or an even hotter flame, a la Azula.
