Anyone else having a blast with old-school videogaming?
My list:
Super Mario Brothers (NES) Super Mario Brothers 2 (NES) Super Mario Brothers 3 (NES) Super Mario 2: Lost Levels (NES) All must-haves. You either love it or you don't.
Solomon's Key (NES) Interesting puzzle/action game. It doesn't give you a password or let you save which is REALLY aggravating.
Kirby's Adventure (NES) For my daughter
The Legend of Zelda (NES) Zelda II: The Adventures of Link (NES) I've never played a Zelda but I've heard they're good. Can't play the Wii Zelda because it makes me dizzy.
Lode Runner (NES) I'd much rather have the C-64 version, but this will do in a pinch.
The Adventures of Lolo (NES) Classic puzzle/action game that *does* give you a password between levels. Yah!
Play Action Football (NES) Sucks. I don't know why I downloaded this one. Should have gotten Tecmo Bowl instead.
Milon's Secret Castle (NES) Not very good from what little I've played of it. The description sounded interesting but the gameplay is awkward.
Kirby's Dream Course (SNES) Cute marble/golf game that doesn't make me dizzy like Super Monkey Ball does.
Donkey Kong Country (SNES) Classic platformer.
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) See Zelda above.
Super Mario World (SNES) See Mario above.
Sonic the Hedgehog (GENESIS) I downloaded this one more because I felt I *should* have it rather than because I enjoy playing it alot. Way too fast for me. I never know what the heck I'm doing.
Shining in the Darkness (GENESIS) Basic RPG, but one of the few I actually finished back in the day.
Sonic 3D Blast (GENESIS) Daughter asked me to download. Looks interesting
Zelda: Ocarina (N64) See Zelda above.
Battle Lode Runner (TURBO GRAFX 16) Not sure what this is, actually. I downloaded it thinking it was the original. Haven't looked into it much.
Chew Man Fu (TURNO GRAFX 16) Another puzzle/action game. Looks pretty cool. I just downloaded this one today.

I haven't got anything on my VC yet (the Wii is still in the box...Lainie says I can't open it until Christmas!), but I doubt I'll get much on it. I already have 25 other consoles and pretty much every game I'd want to play on them.
I *may* try out Sin and Punishment for the N64, though. Being a (up until now, except for fan-made patches) Japanese-language only game, I don't actually have a copy of that one. I hope other translated games (DragonForce 2? Shining Force 3 parts 2 and 3?) make their way onto the VC as well...

Stephen, what do you mean it doesn't give you a password or let you save? Virtual Console games can ALL be saved....just exit the game in that certain Wii way, and you can come back to exactly where you left off, even in the middle of a level, etc. Solomon's Key was the first game I ever picked up for the VC, because I love that game more than you love your wife. The music uplifts my spirit, and gives me magical football handicapping power.
P.S. I haven't tested this, but I'm so sure I'm right, that I never will.

I got Sin and Punishment as soon as it was available, and then wished I hadn't.

Okay Snoopster, I felt sorry for you, so I went downstairs to see what I have loaded on my Virtual Console so far:
Solomon's Key (Yes, you can save it...and level select works just like it always did: At the GDV screen after your last death, hold up and both 1 & 2 and the game starts at the last room you were in. If you REALLY don't know how to preserve VC games' status, just hit the home key and select Wii Menu. The next time you play the game, you'll start on that screen, and you select "Close". I hope you consider this very helpful, and dedicate your next game design to me.)
Wario's Woods. Never had it, and never should have.
Ristar. Same story.
Super Star Soldier. Who knows?
Super Mario 64. The all time classic, up until SMG.
Victory Run. A nostalgic paean to my long-gone Turbografx.
Military Madness. My favorite Genesis title of all time.
Comix Zone. Sounded nifty. Barely looked at it
Kid Icarus. Another fine throwback to days with fewer bits.
Ice Climber. One that I missed originally.
Punch Out!! Some goofs at BGG convinced me I had to have this. It's still fun, even after all those years.
Castlevania IV. No clue what prompted this one, but it's never going to get replayed on my Wii.
Double Dungeons. I just felt like it.
Dragon's Curse. I was apparently possessed by space aliens that day.
SMB: The Lost Levels. Needs no justification!
Neutopia. With a great name like that, who could resist?
Kirby's Adventure. Who wouldn't enjoy adventuring with Kirby??
Bonanza Bros. See next entry.
Chew Man Fu. See previous entry.
Sin and Punishment. Another excuse to commune with Jon Theys? No, just an excuse to use the classic controller more. What a shame I hate the game.
And now I must look and see what newer stuff I should get. I can't believe I haven't touched SMG since going to BGG.CON......after the holidays that's my first priority.

So people actually pay these rip-off prices for virtual console games? Intriguing.

I just play the ROMs on my PC with an N64 controller to USB adapter and an old N64 controller.
I recently played through Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Perfect Dark. I tried to play through Goldeneye, but it sucks so hard that not even nostalgia can get me through it.

I'm pretty sure this is TG-16. Did you try Zak and Wiki yet? Looks like a great Wii puzzle game.

Hardly rip off pricing. If you can't afford the 5 bucks for a game, then you should probably hit the bread lines now.

Okay, obviously you are insufficiently familiar with the concept of the non-self identical thing, Mark. But without checking you, I stand corrected. Certainly MM was later ported to the PS1, with additional levels, but I never bought it, or its sequel on that platform. (Unless the sequel was contained as the add-on PS1 levels, who can recall that sort of stuff? In any event I never had any of it for the PS1....)
Yes, I have Zack & Wiki (please note the correct spelling of "Zack"!) It is a great, fun game, but I am totally displeased by the rhythm minigame, which for whatever reason I can barely make work. There's some sensitivity issue with my Wiimote, or I don't get the initial hand position correct...or something. Whatever it is, my inability to access the content that this optional minigame offers has completely soured me on the game. And I'm too busy playing DQM Joker on my DS, lately, to play almost anything else.

I've been unable to find a ROM for an old NES game called Fire & Ice.

The reason is that you aren't using the game's correct title, perhaps. Here's a link to a Fire 'n Ice rom, because I am not nearly as unfriendly
as Stephen Glenn says I am:
http://www.evilintellect.com/clarph/files/Fire%20'n%20Ice%20(U)%20%5B!%5D.zip
Edit: Okay, the single quote in the middle of the string freaks out the ever delightful BGG thread software. Just copy the whole thing to your browser's address bar, if you want to download it. I didn't do any research on the ROM at all, so if it doesn't work with your emulator, just search on "fire 'n ice rom".

Are there any good strategy/RPG games for the virtual console? I have Military Madness which is amazing, and Ecco which is amusing.
I didn't realize Kirby was there, though. I should look at that
How is Shining Force for the Wii? I have fond memories of that game.

Ha, you like Turok and disdain Goldeneye? Are you hanging upside down or something? I see what you're saying. My excuse is that I've never actually played Turok, so it was new to me. I didn't actually find most of the keys, though (I would of quit during the 2nd or 3rd level if I didn't add a cheat to get all keys and just race through the levels quickly).

I actually seem to recall liking Turok a little bit for awhile, but GoldenEye had such fun timed challenges...it took me 8 billion tries to do the 1.5 minute challenge on the first level, and almost that many for the one where you only had 2.5 minutes. However, GoldenEye remains the only game that I have ever "fully" beaten on my own, no cheats necessary.
Hey ekted! There are two copies of Fire 'n Ice up for sale right now on eBay.... One is only 100 bucks! I was tempted.... I still have an NES, and I never played Fire 'n Ice.... Of course the 30 buck copy is more reasonable, but it's not "near mint."

If you drop $10 for a crappy N64 game, yeah, you might feel a bit cheated, but $10 for Super Mario 64 is totally worth it, IMO (I never did own an N64).

I play emulated ROMs on my PSP, but $5-8 is more than reasonable for the chance to (legally) play old classics on my living room television. Above I mentioned the less-known Devil's Crush, but of course classics like SMB, SMB2(j), Sonic, Super Metroid, Zelda, and Link to the Past are all true classics of their respective genres and eras.

I absolutely adore the 2-D Ecco games. The exploration and music in both were great, and I thought Tides of Time had some of the best graphics on the Genesis.
The NES Kirby came late in the lifespan of that console, but it was a really solid platformer, too.

Guess I am spoiled by PC, PS2, XBox prices where it would be hard to justify $10 for something older than 5 years.
