To start off, I don't like Bang!, at all. People keep telling me that if you get into a good game with people who are into it that get into character it is a lot of fun. I've never been in one of those games. Even when playing with people who tell me this the game rapidly becomes draw two cards, play a bunch, no interaction, just flat.
The problem is that we keep ending up at parties where games come up and inevitably someone says, "hey, have you ever played Bang!" They talk it up to the other guests, none of whom are boardgamers, who think it sounds pretty cool and decide that they want to play.
What I would like is a recommendation for a game that I could counter with. I envision them saying, "hey, have you ever played Bang!" To which I respond, "oh, if you like Bang! I bet you'd like..." Then I pull out something that a Bang player might like, but which I like much better too.
Anything that you think would fit that niche?

Are you looking for something that can play up to 7 players as well? Do you want a similar them or genre or just a similar type of gameplay?

probably something for a large group, not too serious. Card game would be great.

Family Business was the first game I thought of. Faster game play, although a much simpler game. But still one of the classics. Only for 6, unless you get multiple copies.
Also to consider would be the Nuclear War series of games. Very dark humor, and the play is a bit slower in all honesty. But it's a (pay)load of fun! With multiple games of the series put together, you can get 10 or more to play.

I played Lifeboat last night and much preferred it to Bang. Kinda sorta the same type of game, but shorter and more fun in my opinion.

I found Bang! tedious and boring too. Try Ca$h 'n Gun$ instead. You'll be much happier.

Hex Hex is a fun, quick screw-you game. Each player starts with a hand of cards that may be used to direct a hex around the table. Cards are played until the hex can no longer move or is detonated.
At that point, the person with the most remaining life is declared the winner and makes up a new rule. My favorite rules from the last session include:
Each time you put your elbows on the table, lost a life point Each time you play a card, you must touch your nose or lose a life point
I'm certain that other, wackier, rules could arise. This should be fun for a lighthearted group.

I'm a big fan of Coyote, a card game which kind of turns the concepts in Liar's Dice on its head, as you know all of the information except your own card. Works well with large groups. The game itself comes with equipment for six players, but it's easy to add a seventh--just have one player use a handkerchief for a headress.
For that matter, Liar's Dice (or Bluff) is very popular and handles six players well.
Diamant is a light push-your-luck game which handles up to 8 players effortlessly. It has great bits, or you can go with the cheaper, less lavishly produced Incan Gold, which has the same gameplay.

Noone mentioned Bacchus' Banquet yet? Looks promising. Mag·Blast (Third Edition) could be worth checking out as well.
If you want a more Werewolf-like game, The Castle of the Devil has received a lot of praise as well.
Good luck.

The games I was going to suggest have already been mentioned, but the first thing that came to my mind was Ca$h 'n Gun$. Everyone of my friends that's played it (including those who don't like board games) enjoyed it and was happy to play it again. It holds up to 6, but there's an expansion (Ca$h 'n Gun$: Yakuzas) that takes it up to 9. My copy of the expansion is on its way to me so I can't comment on it yet, but the base game is great fun. Amazing how intimidating having 5 orange foam pistols pointed at you can be.
Family Business is the other game that came to mind that you're group might enjoy. It, too, takes up to 6. There is no expansion for it that I know of, though I guess you could get a second copy of the game and doctor up the gang cards...

If the group is big enough, and variant of Werewolf will do well.
You won't be PLAYING it the first round, but someone will want to host the second run.

I don't have a suggestion for what game to counter with (other than to second Citadels) but I do have a suggestion on the countering itself.
I think it's a very bad idea.
In my experience countering with alternative game ideas when dealing with non-gamers NEVER WORKS EVER. The first game is always played. Always.
When a non-gamer suggests a game to a group of non-gamers it seems safe. It must be easy and probably not dorky like whatever the hell Aaron is going to suggest... He's really into games so whatever he has to offer is obviously really hard to learn and will probably make me start wearing pocket protectors.
At best you'll likely get a "promise" that they'll play your game "next".
You have to fire the first salvo. YOU need to suggest your game FIRST before anyone has a chance to offer anything else up. Do whatever you can to drown out any alternate suggestions too.
Once you get a successful first play in you should find things going smoother for you at future gatherings.
Just some thoughts.
EDIT: I actually would like to suggest the game Diamant as well.

This one is just about to be released by Zman and I was lucky enough to play an advanced copy of it: Shadow Hunters
It's got anime art, secret teams, different win conditions, upgrades and equipment, a little dice rolling, and a great deduction mechanism where you pass "hermit cards" to other players, privately forcing them to answer a question which hints to their true identity.
I might never play bang again! I'll second The Castle of the Devil also!

To set you at ease the last group didn't know me well enough to be able to make that statement. The previous group was probably more in the pocket protector set than I am. It included a physicist, a computer programmer, and a math graduate student.
Your sentiment is well taken though.

I might also like to add Elixir, an incredibly silly but fun game that is a card game and fairly easy for even new gamers to get in to. I would also have to agree with the Werewolf suggestions, which I learned as Mafia.

Hey Aaron,
let me start of by saying I love Bang!. I often play with a couple of social/light gamers who are willing to try out some of the heavier stuff, but prefer the lighter games. I've tried a few of the mentioned suggestions, and I'll tell you how they worked for me.
The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow: This one worked like a charm and is still the favorite whenever we have a really large group (you need 9 people at minimum to play)
Citadels: Although everyone liked it, it never came even close to Bang! in the minds of most of the people I play with. It's a good game, and you will probably like it a lot better than Bang!, but it just didn't have the theme appeal that Bang! had for most of the people in my group.
Saboteur: This one went over really well, but doesn't seem to hit the table very often. Personally I think it's a bit light compared to Bang!.
The Castle of the Devil: This one was a bit disappointing. From my experience on werewolves I thought this would be an obvious hit, but instead it was a bit of a mixed blessing. Fun game, but I've played a few games that just didn't seem to end because the people with the winning hands where afraid to call it. Did not get much love from the others.
Ca$h 'n Gun$: This one was a big hit. The theme worked great for everyone. If I had to pick a game to replace Bang!, this would probably be it.
