Many of us here at BGG.com will agree that Zooloretto, the boardgame, is a terrific game. If you haven't tried it yet, Zooloretto the iPhone app is almost as terrific!
It was updated on Aug. 4, 2009 to add the Polar Bear Expansion - the bear that let's you halve your penalty from the barn.
But, there's a bug; at least for me. I can purchase and unlock the Polar Bear, but after quitting the app and returning to it later, I need to purchase the expansion again. Game play is still great, otherwise. But I won't unlock the Polar Bear again until they can fix this bug.
Otherwise, this is a well done application of an awesome boardgame. The interface is perfectly done! My only other complaint is not knowing how many coins I have from the main play window.
Game play is nearly identical to the board game, except that you can earn coins when completing an enclosure with a baby - not official rules compliant.
You'll be hard pressed to find an app that has more intuitive controls. The graphics are cute, but appropriate for a game with the theme of collecting animals for making the most popular zoo. The soundtrack is simple, and shouldn't make your teeth clench every time you hear it. It's a simple option choice to quiet it or silence it.
After having played nearly one hundred games, I find the AI players are moderately challenging. The ability to play against live players using the pass and play option increases this app's value.
Zooloretto is a family board game that is well worth the price of the app, especially considering that the actual board game sells for about $45-$50. I highly recommend it. Even with the Polar Bear bug, this game is worth the $5. Just don't unlock the Polar Bear yet.

I'm happy to hear that the promised enhancements are starting to show up. I'm also sad to hear that they have goofed up the implementation. Here's hoping that there will be a quick patch to remedy things.
Also, a big thanks for the warning. I have more than enough points to unlock the polar bear a couple of times, but I would rather save them for future enhancements!
I will add my endorsement to the iPhone/iPod Touch implementation of Zooloretto - it works well and is easy to play. I have a couple of minor quibbles (I would like to be able to choose my own avatar/name while still accumulating "unlock points" and I would like an undo button), but it has a couple of key features for an iPhone game (at least for me!): 1) it saves games when you have to take a call or switch to another app 2) once you have turned off the soundtrack, you can listen to music or podcasts while playing the game.

I also really enjoy the iPhone game, and my family plays the boardgame frequently.
I strongly endorse the concept of an "undo" feature...so that those of us with big fingers can redeem some of those "Oops...oh, crap!!" moments.

I got the update and was finally able to play the game. I bought the game with my new 3GS early in July and was dismayed to find that the game would not even work. It took a while for the update to be approved, but it is a nicely done game.
I hope they have good success with it, but their ratings are way down right now for having an app that would not work for a lot of people.

I've had the same exact issue and was wondering if it was just me. Glad to see it wasn't and that I can now try it out.

Yeah, I was dismayed to see the latest update crash a couple of times in mid-game, and it can't seem to remember that I've purchased the Polar Bear expansion, though it certainly has deducted my points for it. Disappointing overall that they can't get this stuff right.

All right, here's an odd twist to this bug: My Polar Bear is still ACTIVE even though my shop and my add-on screens show him locked and unavailable!

I finished a game in which a player completed the 6-animal enclosure before the game ended, and the polar bear appeared. I "think" it was scored correctly, but I didn't get a chance to verify the score before the app moved on.
Can anyone else see if they get similar results on their own iPhone? I'll pass on what I can to SpinBottle Games, the developer.

I want to share an email I got from SpinBottle Games, the developer of Zooloretto.

Quote: Dear William,
thank you for your bug report. We fixed these bugs and started betatesting it now. If everything goes well we will be able to submit a new update to Apple by end of this week.

I picked up the game for .99 and am glad I did! Been a lot of fun. I did experience the Polar Bear bug today. Unlocked it and then when I restarted it's not unlocked and my total score is -27700..hehe.
Guess i'll just keep playing!

I updated to the new version, and when I try to run the app, it shows the title page, and then drops back to the apps interface in my Touch

I had that and I went to the settings and had it skip the intro and it works fine now as long as I don't have anything playing when I start it up.

Try doing a hard reboot of your Touch. Hold the home and power buttons for a few seconds and it will shutdown completely. Then power it back up. Sometimes that helps clear things up.

You don't necessarily need the hard reboot; just hold the power button until the "shut down" slider comes up. shut down, and press the poser button to turn it on.
I've seen several post on iPhone forums that recommend this anytime you install a new app. I sometimes do, and always troubleshoot "app failure" with this first. It almost always works for me.

Great Zooloretto for the iPhone news:
Zooloretto has been updated to fix the Polar Bear bug, without any indication of introducing a new bug. :-)
It's a free update and the game is still on sale for 99 cents!!!!!

Cheers that sorted it (also turned off the music, just to be sure)

I bought the Polar Bear before the last update and it remained locked as described above. Now that I have the update, the bear looks unlocked, but it never appears in a game regardless of who fills their large pen first. Is there another trigger I should be expecting?
