My favourite game to play with my husband is Balloon Cup by Kosmos.
It's so much fun, check out my review of it on my blog:

Race for the Galaxy is what my wife and I play the most. I highly recommend it and it plays just as good with 3, or 4. I have not picked up any of the expansions yet but plan to very soon.

Oh good! We have that game but haven't played yet. I'll have to tell my husband, thank you!

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

My wife and I play a lot of Lost Cities ... it's been the big thing here for a while. I've never tried Race for the Galaxy and may ask for it for Christmas.

Wow, hello and welcome to all the new users!
My boyfriend and I enjoy: Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers Carcassonne: The Castle (designed specially for 2) Jambo - The best of the Kosmos two player line, I think. Mr. Jack Roma Battle Line
And several abstracts: Ingenious Blokus 3D Gobblet

Flight of the seabirds, scattered like lost words, wheel to the storm and fly. Fare thee well now, let your life proceed by it's own design. Nothing to tell now, let the words be yours, I'm done with mine.
To seek the sacred river Alph, to walk the caves of ice, to break my fast on honey dew and drink the milk of paradise... I had heard the whispered tales of immortality, the deepest mystery from an ancient book I took a clue.

The wife and I currently enjoying the following (though sometimes with the kids):
Wasabi! Genji Court of the Medici Fairy Tale Bus Agricola
We also enjoy the co-op games as we can work together (again sometimes with the kids); Pandemic Ghost Stories Arkham Horror Space Alert
edit: We are also enjoying Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Our favorites are:
Ticket to Ride: Europe With two of us, we play without stations, though. Carcassonne Plays best with two. I really want to get this to the table more often... Hey, That's My Fish! Like carcassonne, it's best with two and I don't play it as much as I'd like...

Welcome! My girlfriend and I play lots of games together, so we're always looking for good two player games.
Since you like Balloon Cup, you'll probably like some of the other games in the Kosmos two player line. Lost Cities and Battle Line (which technically isn't Kosmos, but feels like it belongs) would probably feel more close to Balloon Cup. Jambo adds a few more things and is a fun game.
Otherwise, we like a lot of games for just the two of us:
Carcassonne Ticket to Ride: Europe Thurn and Taxis Alhambra Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper Catan Card Game San Juan Race for the Galaxy Agricola

By the way, since it looks like your passionate enough about games that you like writing game reviews, you should try submitting some here and earn some geekgold.

The girlfriend prefers the shorter Euros, while I tend to enjoy more Ameritrashy stuff.
Her favorites
Kingsburg Citadels Castle Mr. Jack The Red Dragon Inn
My favorites
Cosmic Encounter Galaxy Trucker Fury of Dracula Arkham Horror
Together we are able to cover quite a bit of ground. I also love alot of the the games she enjoys. She is a great gamer and will play anything as long as it doesn't last longer than 2-3 hours.

My wife & I still play the usual recommendations (Lost Cities, Jambo, Travel Blokus, etc), but are currently playing a lot of Traders of Carthage and The Hanging Gardens. Both play fast and have very beautiful components. Although both will take up to four players, they are best with two. Traders of Carthage has more depth, and supports more frequent play. The Hanging Gardens is just plain beautiful, and is less confrontational. It's unique in that it is relaxing and engaging at the same time.

Hi and welcome to the geek!
If you enjoy Balloon Cup you should try Odin's Ravens. There are some clear similarities to Balloon Cup, but still a different game. Also released by Kosmos in their two player series.

Re: Race for the Galaxy
A quick word of warning, RftG is a great game, but is complicated when you first start. My gf and I found that it took us about 5-6 games to "get" the game. Now that we have played it a bunch with the 2 expansions, a game takes about 10-15 minutes 2 player. I would not play RftG with a significant other that wasn't into gaming. We found that when we play this with our friends only about have enjoy it.

My game Triumvirate, which goes on sale tomorrow, has been well rated and reviewed for play as a couples game. Its a two player so that should come as no surpise.
The designer of Balloon Cup (Stephen Glenn) wrote up a detailed rating (not a review) for the game, and gave it a 7.5 if that means anything.
Worth checking out the ratings and reviews to see if it might work for you.

I really enjoy Mr. Jack, and my wife's favorite game is Dominion.
These two games get by far the most playtime for the two of us.

We also have Lost Cities. I agree, that one is also fun. I'm not as addicted as Ballon Cup though.

We play a lot of Glory to Rome and Race for the Galaxy, mainly because they're short.
We also quite like Agricola, Vegas Showdown, and Vikings, the latter of which really works nicely two-player.

I'm not surprised Dave, that's likely why we haven't played it yet. My husband has read the rules a few times and says it's complicated. We should give it a go though.
