Update: Roto is now available on the iPhone App Store!

Hi all,

A fourth Reiner Knizia game is on the way to the iPhone and iPod Touch: Roto. But for the first time this is a totally new game design made specifically for this platform. It should be available on November 2. I will give more details when it is out.

Full disclosure: I am the main programmer. ninja

Here is the company press release. It includes a link to an interview with Dr Knizia about this game and other gaming topics. Follow the Facebook link to also see a hip gameplay video.

Quote:
Hydrix is proud to present Roto, a new and original solitaire game for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Roto is a challenging and addictive game developed by Dr. Reiner Knizia.

Dr Knizia is best known for his critically acclaimed and hugely popular board games, however Roto was designed from the ground up for the iPhone.

The rules are simple so anyone can play but mastering all the challenges and plan ahead to use the best possible combinations is harder than it may seem.

A new game, a new challenge, it's never the same.

Watch Dr. Knizia on YouTube talking about this new game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80J4VKUsEVY

The game can be used whenever you feel like playing or passing time, you can pause and resume whenever it suits.
Disclaimer: once hooked, people have reported games lasting well over 40 minutes

Features:
* 3 gameplay: Puzzle, Arcade and Action
* Statistical analysis of your last game
* Pause and Resume
* Global scoring system, compare your results with all other iPhone players
* Color-blind mode

Language Support:
* English, French, German

System Requirements:
* Roto requires an iPhone or iPod Touch with OS 2.0 or later

Pricing and Availability:
Roto was submitted to the Apple store with a tentative release date of October 14th, 2009.
The application will be available worldwide exclusively through the Apple's App store for US$2.99

Visit Roto's facebook user and support group:
http://tinyurl.com/y8uzs65

What some early players have to say:

Karen E. "I can’t wait to play it (it is so addictive!!!!)."

Francois A. "I've lost, I can't do anymore"

Reiner K. "I have played the game for about 5 hours. I like all three play modes!"

Gerald S.: "A revolution in match-3 games!"

Re: Reiner Knizia's Roto, exclusively for iPhone (soon)
Sweet looks good. Beta testing another unannounced Knizia iphone game now too. I have his Poison, Robot Master, Knights of Charlemagne iphone games. I went ahead and posted your press release on toucharcade for ya in upcoming games section.

I do wish Knizia would perhaps revist a few of his classics and see if their viable for publishing on iphone. From the interview he did comment how it was an idea spinning in his head and never could fully develop it without proper platform so perhaps he's more excited to develop a few new ones than put out a few classics of his on iphone.

Still hoping for games like Ingenious, Lost Cities, Razzia! or RA either one...heck even RA dice game. Personally I thought since 3.0 came out with push notifications we'd see an influx of strategy board games turn based but I'm just hoping that they'll in development and perhaps waiting for the userbase to upgrade to 3.0 from 2.0. At least apple lowered upgrade for ipod touch users from $10 to $5 per account.

I'm sure many more games will appear, remake of boardgames and new designs alike... But it's not that easy to make a good game and it is still a financial gamble, so please be patient and support current developments (as you already do mrbass) in order to give more incentives to make even more games!

I certainly will try my best to bring more games to the iPhone!

Just a quick update:

Unfortunately, Apple has just rejected the game on a technicality. We have fixed the issue and have re-submitted the app, hopefully it will be quicker to go through the re-approval system...

I will post again as soon as the app is available. Sorry for the delay, if you were waiting for this game!

Finally, Roto has been approved!

To celebrate, here are 3 promo codes for it:

These only work in the US I believe. Please indicate which one you have used...

That won't happen until an open system consigns the iPhone to the dustbin of history!! robot Speaking of which, are you porting it to Android? Or is there something in Apple's T&S which disallows that, wouldn't put it past them shake

Review of Roto on AppSmile: 5/5
A nice review of Roto is up on AppSmile.

Conclusion:
Quote:
Replayability is very high for this unique puzzler. Dr. Reiner Knizia’s games never disappoint, and this is no exception. Priced at $2.99, Roto carries a bit of a premium price, but it feels worth every penny. This is a 5-Dimple headspinner that will keep you coming back for more

Would you agree?

I'm really enjoying the game. Am sticking with puzzle mode so far. Had a good game today while watching my kids play in the local park (#1, now )

I like that you can replay a level to try to do better, but haven't done it much yet.

It's very morish.

I do think it's weird to talk about "premium price" when the game costs $3. Sure it's 3x as expensive as other games, but it's $3!

That said, I might have put it on appshopper and waited for the price to drop if I didn't know gerald. shake

1 bit of feedback-- the game timer seems to keep running when the phone is off? It makes my top score look like it took over 500 minutes --

Oh I see... And here I was thinking you just took your time to think really hard about each move!

I assumed all timers would stop when the device is off, strange. I'll investigate! Thanks for telling me.

Roto 1.0.2 is available, grab the update! It fixes the problem with the timer running even when the iPhone is locked (screen off).

If you like Roto, please try and leave some feedback on iTunes, this would really help us make more games!

is the leader board messed up? positions 3 and 4 look exactly like the same gaming session, posted twice?

Great game, btw. I will be rating on itunes just as soon as I get my own computer back up and working.

Also: another bug report. In my game on the leader board it says i took 5 hours or so to play. However, what happened in reality, the wifi in my home didn't pick up the score when i saved it to the itouch. And later in the day i checked global scores on the itouch and that was when my score was uploaded.

I'm might be a slow player, but not that slow!!!! LOL.
