Yeah. People are saying this, but the fact is I will be picking up an iPad 3G for a lot more uses than just boardgaming. I already own an iPhone and know several board gamers who do as well. Perhaps not for Scrabble, but I do intend to make this little scene into a reality at some point.

That is pretty funny! But I've done stupid things like that myself! I remember buying a Radio Shack Pocket Computer for about $1000 thinking it was going to be some great organizer with its little 1 line display and not so portable printer attachment. It was easier to use a $5 calendar.

Well, that's inaccurate.
If someone owns an Ipad and friends own an Itouch, then there's no jackassery involved. It's not like the only thing these devices can do is play scrabble.

That would be an illegal play. Viagra is a proper noun.
And personally, if someone did build that version of Scrabble, or any other game, and made it only work with Apple devices, you'd never get to play it with me!

I wonder about this. The word Kleenex can be considered a proper noun, as it is a brand name, but it is also used generically to describe any type of facial tissue, which should be permissible. Viagra as well, is used as a proper noun to describe the brand, and also in a generic form.
I wouldn't play it either... the iPhone was bad enough, I still laugh at people who have $600 phones, while I do just fine with my $20 phone that only costs $5 a month. And I have $580 to spend on useful things that won't be considered obsolete in a few months.

I have a pocket computer. It browses the web, does maps, handles personal & work email, runs my personal, work, & other calendars, accesses BGG Via custom client & web (eg this post), handles multiple IM networks, IRC, monitors my servers, etc etc etc. I use it for several hours every day. Oh, and every so often I also use it to make a phone call.

I think this will happen, but the sizes are a bit off. I find the iPhone a bit small as the "remote," an iPad-sized device would be much more pleasant to use. The main display would need to be roughly the same size as the main board in the game being played.
Prices should come down although they will take longer than I would like.

iPads are nothing but technology going in the wrong direction. If we ignored the fact that they were nothing but oversized iPhones (which I have myself and enjoy), they are restrictive to a point of it being ridiculess as well as costing a bloody load.
Could someone, anyone tell me what the benefits are of having an iPad over a Laptop of equal value?

As a general rule of thumb, if the word is always capitalized, it's not a valid Scrabble word.

12 hour battery life? Can't take the battery out of iPad, but with laptop could easily carry spare batteries (even though I admit that it can be a hastle). Love to know what happens when an iPad freezes, guess your kinda stuck lol
Btw some other things about the iPad:
No Multitasking (can't surf the web, listen to music, or have a document open at the same time, only one thing)
No keyboard (might seem like a good thing, but unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use)
No HDMI output
No flash (yes no flash videos, games or anything using flash whatsoever)
No USB ports, you need to use a bloody adapter just to use USB!
And if owning an iPad which is me lugging around a massive oversized brick of an iPhone around with me makes me attractive to the ladies, I think it may be time for me to start liking men instead.

All technology is useful based on your requirements. There's a lot of cool shit the iPad can do, so if you don't need the things you listed, especially if have another medium to access them, and you want the features an iPad has, then it is a fine piece of hardware. This is like the silly mac/windows/linux debate. Depending on what you do, the programs you use, and your comfort level, one will invariably be better than the others.
Also, what moron spends $1700 on a boardgame? You MacZombies will fall for anything.

This is not entirely correct. You can listen to your music and surf the web at the same time. the iPod functionality runs in the background.
It is only 3rd party apps that cannot run in the background.

- Yep, no extra battery but if I'm messing around with a laptop over 10 hours between charges I'm probably doing something wrong.
- Most people won't care about multitasking, but I'm with you there. I think the iPad should have multitasking especially since it is not being used as your cell phone.
- It has a keyboard on screen (almost full size) and will work for most people. You can also use a bluetooth keyboard with it.
- I doubt many will care about the HDMI output. Heck, I've never used the video out on my iPhone. Has anyone on this thread?
- Flash would be nice, but if HTML5 is going to do away with it, all the better.
- USB port would be nice, but I don't miss it on my iPhone. At least it is available with an adapter. Not ideal, I agree.
- I can't help you with your sexual preference.

I understand where your coming from, for example the video game console "wars" with each one being good and unique in its own way (even though currently the use for my Wii is to prop things up and collect dust sadly).
But the thing that annoys me in the whole iPad case is that its removed things which are seen today as basic things to have, I mean no USB? Really? I need to carry around a special adapter? And no flash? The only reason it doesn't have flash is so it can sell its application's and thats the only reason. Now I can live with that on my iPhone since its a mobile phone, but for something which is supposed to be a thing to have instead of a laptop, just seems silly.
Also, did you know that Apple has control over things on everybodies iPads, so if they wanted to they could delete things off your own iPad whenever they wanted?
I don't mind fun bits of technology and things which are different and effective, but the whole thing in this case seems to be going towards people accepting things which are limiting and restrictive purely because of a brand and the "shiney things it can do".
Edit: Arrrg i've just realised im basically creating a "Apple fanboy vs Windows/Linux fanboy" flamewar recipe and I honestly haven't meant to do that. Im just expressing my opinion on the iPad and thats all, nothing personal against people who do like it (even though I may question it hehe). If windows or any other company made the same product I would be saying the same thing (even though apple does have questionable practices) ^^

Axiom: The people who use the so-called "90%-er functionality" will eventually find 1% of the other 10% and will forever wonder why they shoe-horned themselves into a device which didn't allow them to do said 1%.
It's called the Internet. People find things there. The only guarantee that this axiom will not befall such a device to remove access to it.

Clever.
Of course, if there were plumbing comics in the same spirit, they would poke fun at the jackasses who spent five grand to plumb their houses, just so they could play the pipes like a xylophone.
