My buddy and I have been doing this since college, and it is awesome.

If you think you've tried X-Com, you've never tried it without allowing reloads.

That's right. No backsues. No "aw crap, he was in the closet", Be afraid. What's that? A chrysalid just munched the face off your best sniper? Too bad.

Need to cut your losses and run from that terror mission? What? China just pulled your funding? TOO BAD,

Your interceptors just got blown out of the sky by some behemoth UFO? And now alliens are ravaging the skies for the next two weeks because you blew the company money on stupid base upgrades? TOO BAD.

Trust me, it is super fun. Give it a shot!

P.S. Do not try this on super high difficulty. Base difficulty is just about right, particularly if you're used to reloading when bad things happen.

I call this "Iron man mode" and it really makes the game TENSE.

I would usually never load mid-encounter or terror mission but just before my inteceptor reached the crash/terror site. This way it added a lot of tension during the mission and if I got it severely wrong it was still a brand new random level when I loaded.

Yeah, I'm sure thats how a lot of folks give it the college try. I always save the game at various intervals, in case of act of disaster, computer crapping out, life interrupting, etc.

Also, give your squad the names of people you know.

Playing it any other way sucks the mystery out of the game.
