Inspired by another succession game we, the VGG users, will start our own game.
So what are the rules?
Everyone may participate. Simply ask and you may find your place in the queue. Each player continues the previous savegame which then should be uploaded somewhere, available for everyone else. Each "turn" has a duration of one year (from spring to spring). Mayor player created disasters fun lead to a rollback, but normale setbacks are acceptable and part of the fun. Each player has to post a report of his turn, to ease the reading it should feature screenshots. After each turn a player may (and should) name a dwarf so that we can follow the fate of the prior rulers. We will use version 31.12 of the game. The maximum time for one turn is one week. If a player should not be ready by then, the next player continues with the previous save game. This may sound harsh but keeps the game rolling.
Please avoid FPS killers like flooding the world or other evil stuff. Also any kind of exploit should be avoided.
To use the savegame please do the following: - Download a fresh copy of DF 31.12 - Use this copy only for this succession game - copy (and unzip) the region1 folder into the data/save/ folder - if you already have such a folder DELETE it. Don't overwrite it. Delete it. (or move it somewhere else)
To store the savegame for a future user: - zip the region1 folder - upload it to rapidshare or something like that - post link and report here
Play order: Turn 01: Harlekin (savegame) Turn 02: Ciaran (savegame) Turn 03: Shatner (savegame) Turn 04: Livinus (savegame) Turn 05: Luge (savegame) Turn 06: Harlekin (savegame) Turn 07: Turn 08: Turn 09: Turn 10:
The world Adretar is created with standard parameters and an age of 1003 years and a total of 1225972 events. That seems like a lot.
UPDATE The second turn is over, the save game can be downloaded up there. Remember that you can start the savegame, abandon the fortress and start to explore it in Adventure mode.

-
This went faster than I thought, I am finished with the first year and the fortress is coming along quite well. I will post the report and the screenshots + savegame when I get home (about 6 hours from now). Whoever wants to do the second turn should please speak up.

EDIT: Report is down below. I will add a link to each savegame and the name of the player to the first posting. If this threads gets too crowded an extra thread only for the reports will be created (which will be done anyway when this is over).

I can't for the life of me figure out this game (OK, to be honest, I just never felt like committing) so I won't participate, but I remember some of the successor games on the DF site. The AARs often turn into great, fun reads.
So I just wanted to show my support for this

Our world
Day 1
My name is Olon Regirid, leader of the expedition sent from Erith Orshet in search for wealth and fortune. With a force of six other sturdy dwarves I left my beloved home some weeks ago. But now, that our meager supplies are dwindling I have declared that we have reached our destination: The Plains of Gorging. In this tropical shrubland we will build our new home. We shall call it Lekcerol "Bristledlenses". Yes, I know, it may be hard to pronounce but trust me. After some well deserverd beers it rolls from the tongue.
After giving initial orders my fellow dwarves began their work immediately. Only some kicking encouragement was involved. Without hesitation the evil and large wooden predators that surrounded our new land were cut down and put to their end. They shall make for comfortable beds. Not that our lazy proud workers have earned them yet.
During our first day we even struck the first reservoir of jewels which raised our morale to a new height. The construction of the first workshops started and even before brewing the first beer or cooking the first meal our craftsmanship should provide us... Oh my god, while I write these words a horde of evil looking Llamas passes our newly created gate. They shall provide us with enough food to survive the upcoming winter. Time for some hunting.
It started raining; we have to endure this evil weather a while longer. Work is not going as fast as planned. Deduk Berlanlar, our medic, approached me today and said that we should keep a watch on our supplies. Food might be running low. And since no one of us knows how to handle a crossbow it might be wise to consider some serious farming. There is a brook somewhere in the southeast, it might be a good way to irrigate our fields. I will speak to our mechanic to see if there is any way to use it. Perhaps he can even explain how a crossbow works, might come in handy.
In the meantime our Trade Depot has been built and is waiting for the first caravans to arrive. We still don't have any crafts of value but that should change soon. The halls of Craftsmanship are as good as finished.
21st Slate, 1004, Mid-Spring We have found an ample supply of sand, this should boost our glass-making industry; if it should ever start. Since we can dig fast into the sand I decided to build our stockpiles there; they are right above our workshops and should be easy to reach and not hinder our further expansion.
The irrigation preparation is processing as planned. Our miners are digging channels for the water while our mason, Zuglar Danglewire, cuts floodgates and hatches out of rock. We still need a dwarf who is a skilled mechanic to create the mechanisms that are required to trigger the flood though.
To improve the hygiene in the fort I ordered that a well should be dug out in the center of the entrance hall. Work has started immediately and blocks are to be cut out of beautiful rocks. This should become a real eye catcher. At least if your are thirsty and out of booze. And half-blind.
27th Felsite, 1004, Late Spring Today is a good day. We struck gold. Our fathers will be proud, praise Ozor! I ordered some special furniture for me at once. As the leader of the expedition I should have at least some comfort. But this might take a while.
Summer has arrived and our food production has not yet started. Since we haven't much beverage left my fellow dwarves are getting restless. Time to change this, I will order the construction of some stills right next to our kitchen. This should solve as good as any problem.
I went hunting today since I had not much left to do. My fellow dwarves are following my orders and everything works out as planned. The hunting trip was without much success as expected. It started raining right after I left the safety of our fortress and therefore returned a short while after without having caught anything. Blamed the weather.
Deduk, our medical dwarf, again complained. This time he was arguing about the lack of doors at our main entrance. Ha! He doesn't seem to understand that we can't abide simple doors at our main gate! We need something better. Something more stunning. I will have to think about this. And maybe I will find a way to shut up this annoying dwarf!
24th Malachite, 1004, Mid-Summer Immigrants arrived. It seems like our people from Erith Orshet have heard of our progress and want to witness our glory or even be part of it. We are writing history here!
Now I have to feed ten other hungry dwarves and therefore I ordered to slaughter one of the llamas that followed us here. No one seems to be attached to that beast so it should be a good supply for food and bones. Ugly beasts, but tasty.
Autumn has arrived and our farming fields are not ready yet. Those lazy dwarves somehow fail to see the importance of all the mechanical devices that are necessary to irrigate those fields. Instead of constructing those they hang around our meager meeting hall. I picked one of them and ordered him to check all our stocks. To keep him from getting on my nerves I even offered him his own study. A luxury that even I don't have, yet.
I went hunting again to forget all the troubles those lazy dwarves create. Even encountered a wild animal, a warthog which managed to escape my skilled shots. Some minutes later I encountered a mountain goat which was easier prey. This doesn’t mean that I managed to kill it but at least it now seems to be angry since it has been hit several times. Perhaps bolts made out of llama bones are not the perfect ammunition. Sever blood loss solved this problem and the goat died some hours later. At least it suffered a lot.
8th Sandstone, 1004, Mid-Autumn My fellow dwarves have finished the work on the irrigation system. Now we only need to flood the channels in order to start the artificial rain on the fields. So, a dwarf is required who can carve some holes into a wall to let the water through. That shouldn't be a problem but he also has to be able to run faster than the pressurized water. This might prove difficult.
19th Sandstone, 1004, Mid-Autumn Haven't found a worthy subject for Operation Run-Like-Hell. New migrants arrived. Perhaps one of them is willing. Ah, here we have our victim hero: Zglar Danglewire, our beloved Stoneworker. Let us hope that his god Ivorytaxes is in a good mood today. Note to self: Taxes on Ivory is a good idea.
YES! Ozor be praised! He managed to escape the evil fluids and managed to reach the control room without any incidents. The channels are filling right now, everything worked as planned.
12th Timber, 1004, Late Autumn The channels are not full with water so the irrigation project is still not finished. In the meantime a caravan and a diplomat from our mountainhomes arrived. We are carrying our crafts to the Trade Depot while I write these lines. Our relatives should be proud of what we created here.
We traded all our goods and jewels for some leather, some cloths and a lot of cages, barrels, anvils and other useful stuff which we can't produce ourselves yet. I have the feeling that they robbed us but out broker is not very experienced. We let them go for now, they are our blood after all.
Winter has arrived and the water chambers are not full yet. What takes them so long? At least our wells are working now.
22nd Moonstone, 1004, Early Winter The channels are filled! Release the rain! It is working! The farming areas are filling with water, mud is everywhere! Soon we can begin growing our own crops and our distillery will never stop working again!
18th Obsidian, 1004, Late Winter The growing of crops is progressing well. During a hunt, the diplomat from our mountainhomes accompanied me, I encountered a horde of wild elephants. I shot one of them but the bone bolts don't seem to harm them. But I may have angered him. Perhaps it is time for some defensive improvements to our fortress. At least the diplomat was quite impressed by our new sport "miss the elephant".
I talked to our militia commander and he recommended to dig for more sturdy ores so we can begin a solid weapon and armor production. In the meantime he will examine the other dwarves for suitable soldiers.
Hunted an Elephant again. Nearly killed that beast but went out of bolts. But it looks hurt and doesn't stop vomiting. I don't know it this a subtle message or a sign of weakness. At least it is an ugly sight.
1st Granite, 1005 Spring has arrived and my job is done. Another dwarf will be sent from the mountainhome to lead this sparkling jewel of a fortress into a new successful year.
Resulting fortress (main level)
Stocks:
Some notes:
The stocks are looking quite good. We could use more to drink which would require more barrels. The military is also very lacking. A defensive moat would be nice with a draw bridge. We have water aplenty so the moat should be filled. Perhaps some ballista for defense. The production of crafts and jewels is ongoing, more dwarves might help to increase the output. Crops just started growing so they might need further attention. Cloth making and glass making have been ignored up to now. We don't have a hospital and individual quarters are also missing. No weapons, no ammo, no armor. A jail and a sheriff might help to stop any riot that might happen sometime. The elephants are getting close and hunting them is not very easy as they are sturdy. So create better bolts, perhaps some archery training might be useful. How about some traps? We haven't found iron yet, only gold, silver and such. So it might be necessary to dig deeper.

Ok, but if you change your mind just let us know! I'd love to get some fresh blood in here, it makes things even more fun.
I'll go next but I won't get to play too much over the weekend so don't expect any big updates until after Labor Day. Thanks for getting this thing kicked off Harlekin, great first post!

Okay, Claran second and thereofone as third. You don't have to make haste, if you need a whole week it is okay.

Put me in for a turn!
I started a refresher game the other night, and I couldn't even get the dwarves to dig. I have some practicing to do!

To get your dwarves to dig, press: 'd' 'd'.
If you press 'd' and the center of the screen is above open ground it defaults to "Chop trees" (which is 'd' 't').
The savegame download link has a download limit of 10. So if that is ever a problem tell me so and I will upload it again. Great to see that more and more people are interested. I am really thrilled to see what the result will be.

I take it that this succession game is dead in the water?

Definitely not dead in the water .
This is my first attempt at playing a succession game, it feels weird to go into somebody else's fortress like this.
-
-
And if the fortress is overrun by Fun I will be eager to explore it in Adventure mode.
So don't forget to engrave some walls so that the history won't be forgotten.

Wow, so many people play this game I've been meaning to give this a try, and since you seem to think fresh blood will make it... fun... I'm going to download it, try it, and if there's a few turns left I'll jump in. It sounds a lot like a game I could get into given the chance.
-
-
At the beginning the game will kill you. Most of the time you will say WTF?! and fail at everything, most of the time without even noticing. But in the meantime you encounter so many hilarious moments that you can't stop laughing.
So a lot of tutorial following, wiki reading (don't play without!) and forum scrolling is needed. But it is worth every second of it.

Excerpts from the journal of Deduk Berlanlar, chief medical dwarf of Bristledlenses:
17th Granite, 1005
I spoke with Olon today about the lack of protective measures at our front gates. He said it wasn't any of my business but I reminded him that prevention is the best medicine. Unfortunately with our current lack of weapons grade metals it appears that traps are not a viable option at this point, so I instead took it upon myself to draft some of the less productive members of our fort into a standing army.
19th Granite
I got a little annoyed at having to sleep in borrowed beds so I took it upon myself to lay out plans for our new residential area in the southwest wing. I set the miners to digging at once...no need to trouble Olon with this simple matter as I'm sure he's tired of hearing all the complaints.
21st Granite
Olon was all worked up today, something about me having the housing area constructed directly adjacent to our wild animal storage area...I brushed him off but made sure to remind him that we still do not have any medical facilities.
28th Granite
A group of immigrants arrived...two of them said they had some knowledge of weaponry so they were immediately drafted and sent to the barracks.
6th Slate
Our bookkeeper Sakzul Anedbesmar was in a fey mood today, she grabbed a few silver bars, ran to the mechanic's workshop and began working furiously. I don't know what she's up to but it must be something important.
10th Slate
Ground was finally broken on the new hospital today! It looks like it will be one of the largest single purpose rooms in the fortress. Even Olon was in a good mood, I think he was out hunting mountain goats all day.
11th Slate
Sakzul finished her "grand project" today...a silver mechanism which she named "The Courageous Strangers." The rest of us tried to be polite but of course we were somewhat disappointed. To be fair it's probably worth more than everything in our fort put together right now, but I just don't see the point.
4th Felsite
Today Olon came back from his hunt carrying a dead llama. When he reached the butcher shop he dropped it to the ground, then collapsed into a deep sleep on top of the furry corpse. I examined him later and told him he needed to cut down a little on the physical activity. I doubt he'll stop hunting anytime soon but I think he appreciated the fact that I was looking out for him and we're actually becoming pretty good friends.
Early Summer
We've had miners doing some preliminary excavations over the last couple weeks in the hopes of finding some decent metal for weapons, and today we happened upon an amazing discovery: an enormous underground cavern beneath our home! It must be filled with all manner of gems and who knows what else...we have decided to leave it be for now, but once we have protective measures in place it might be worth exploring.
13th Hematite
Today the hospital was officially opened! Hopefully it will be a long while before we need to make use of it, but I feel much better just having it available. I'm going to have the other dwarves start bringing supplies immediately.
4th Malachite
More immigrants arrived today...I'm not sure why they would want to live here when we don't have enough beds for the dwarves we have...hopefully we can find some work for them.
8th Galena
It's been an interesting day...our animal trainer Iton Obokamnek went crazy and started yelling about how he needed body parts - nobody knew what to do but we had some llama bones left over from Olon's last hunting trip so we let him have some of those and hoped that would satisfy him.
The human caravan also arrived and we began to move bins of finished goods to the depot in the hopes of trading off some of our clutter. Unfortunately, due to a miscommunication during the trading process, our broker ended up donating away about 16,000 dwarfbucks worth of merchandise. The humans packed up quickly and left before anyone realized the mistake.
26th Galena
A kobold was spotted on the outskirts of our mountain today! The nasty thing was carrying an empty sack and no doubt he was planning to run off with someone's poor child. It got away before the militia could catch it, but from this point forward it would be good idea to keep better watch near the front gate. I'm fairly certain he followed the caravan in, and once kobolds know where you live there is usually no end to them.
5th Limestone
Iton emerged with his "masterpiece" today, a llama bone chest...uhhh, well I guess someone would like to have it, I'll pass.
16th Sandstone
Another kobold today, foul beasts! And this one got away as well...
11th Timber
The outpost liaison from Erith Orshet arrived today with goods to trade. The process went much more smoothly this time and we acquired quite a bit of leather and cloth, along with all the barrels and usable wood we could take. Since we have yet to discover any iron ores in this mountain we requested that they bring as much as possible with them next time. If we can't make our own steel, we will have to trade for it.
16th Moonstone
Another dwarf was in a strange mood recently, this time it was the miner Dumat Erithkeskal...he created a galena table and decorated it with red spinel and gazelle leather. I question his taste in materials but I'm sure we can find a use for this item at least.
4th Granite
Spring has arrived and another year has passed without a single worker being injured. I'll be surprised if we can keep this up for another year, but with a little luck and some fine dwarven ingenuity I think our home will be a safe and happy place for many years to come.

Great.
I am happy to see that we have no losses up to now. What is the advice you give to your successor? Hunting for ore? I see that the idlers are still spending a lot of time with each other. I see a fun spiral coming if something should happen to any of the dwarves.
Good luck, Ted.

I'm enjoying the read, looking forward to what will happen next.
I am a newbie to Dwarf fortress. When I first came over to VGG, I was uploading a lot of new games, I got my silver uploader badge and then... I stumbled upon Dwarf Fortress and it's the only thing I've been doing in my free time since, even on the train on the way to work. After many failed fotresses: like starting on top of a desolated mountain or getting ambushed or embarking on a frozen lake and having most of my dwarfs drown after a few days when the ice melted. And many lessons learned: like keep the door closed to cave and have some traps and weapons available so you don't have to pummel the first Troglodyte to death with you fists, and if you have a trapped corridor, make sure the you don't have an opening on ceiling on the cave from when you main stairway went down, so a Forgotten beast comes flying up to the living quarters.
This time I got a pretty decent fortress going. I got 100 dwarves for the frist time (still have a hard time keeping them busy, 40 idlers is common) and I recently survived my very first Siege! Yey Although 1 of my silly dwarves went into a frenzy, hoping to prove he was more then a Peasant, and chased a fleeing goblin axeman and started bashing him with a empty crossbow and running into him, not very effective. Anyway he's lying in the hospital now with a disabled leg and an infection. Don't know if he will survive.
Anyway I would love to play along, but expect some newbie "fun" and you might have to roll back. I'll describe every step of the way though and you can all laugh at my stupidness. Might be horrible for the person coming after me though. And if you don't want my newbness don't worry I'll happily cheer from the sidelines until I get some more experience.
Anyway good luck all and hopefully a 'fun' story.

My advice is try to be more productive than I was, haha. This is the first time I've played since Toady got the military training working again so I spent most of my turn watching the demonstrations and sparring.
I think the number one priority at this point should still be security. The front gate is pretty much wide open (did you do that to intentionally put us in danger? )...I usually do a long corridor at my entrance rather than a moat, but that's just personal preference. Anything to funnel enemies into a smaller space would be useful. I'd also like to have a safe method of harvesting wood...I believe underground forests are an option now that the caves have been opened up, but a large enclosed area outside with tunnels leading to it might be another possibility. I would expect the first attack to come very soon.
I created some silver war hammers for our military, not sure if they've equipped them yet but I did assign them. Armor is going to be much more difficult since we don't have access to any decent materials...trade, trade, trade for iron & steel bars/armor. And of course all the wood and coal you can get to keep those smelters running.
I dug out an archery range under the depot, hoping that some training members of the militia might catch a kobold thief off guard, but so far I've only seen it being used once. I thought they might train in that room as well as the barracks but it looks like archery practice is not included in the typical training cycle. I don't know if giving them time off in the scheduler would encourage them to practice with the targets or not.

A new version was released last night...I say we stay with the current one because it seems to be pretty stable, but thought I'd give everyone the heads up anyway.
-
-
I tried and copied another game I have running to the new .13 version and it seems to be stable. So everyone should feel free to switch to .13 if they wish.
It fixes some bugs, but nothing very important as far as I can see. So if the current player (whoever it may be then) switches to a newer version please tell us so because switching back might not work at all.
