I've been playing a bit of X-Com lately but it's been a while. And back in the day I used to run a pretty traditional heavy plasma/blaster bomb/'splosions strategy. I've never really played around with psionics (I'm not sure if I ever built a Psi-lab).
So, anyone know off the top of your head what you need to research to access psionic training for your soldiers? I imagine there's some captured aliens to vivisect, maybe some tech to reverse engineer, holo-entertainment, mind probe, that sort of thing.

I think you have to capture one of the floaters (I forget what type) alive.

Any Ethereal, or a high-ranking Sectoid (one or more present in Sectoid bases, terror missions and the larger UFOs).

Also, once you have Psi the game becomes way too easy.

It might be easier to find a medium or larger Sectoid ship, assault it, and try to stun the command crew (IIRC all medium ships have someone of sufficient rank, assuming they don't die in a crash).
Not that assaulting undamaged Sectoid ships is exactly my idea of a good time, either.

No kidding. In my current game the two sectoids in the center of a small ship killed 4 of my soldiers in a row as I tried to breach. Should have used a grenade after they killed the sergeant I suppose.
Just picked up heavy plasma and it's only march 1999, so I'm pretty happy.

It's worth noting that this is the trigger for the game to get significantly harder for a while. From experience, I think it directly causes Battleships to start appearing, which are then very tough to take down until you can build Avengers and Plasma cannons / fusion missiles. And even if you do knock them out of the sky, your ship is likely to be in the repair shop for a while - so hope you don't get lots at once. And if you wait for them to land, it just means there are more aliens waiting to kill or mind control your guys.

Stun bomb them, pretty easy.
After you get psionics it's great to see an alien, take control of him, have him look around, kill the alien next to him, and have him throw his gun on the ground.
