I've got not gripe about the promo cards...I don't have them, probably never will, and don't care a lick.
However, can someone explain to me what anyone would pay so much money for what is essentially a piece of cardboard? I'm at a loss...

The fact that it can be scanned and reproduced on your own makes it a bit ridiculous.

Why pay 50 dollars for any collectible?
I dunno.
Cause I can?
(Not that I'm interested in this particular collectible, but I certainly spend a good deal of my spendable money on collectible things made out of cardboard . . . )

You should have a look at CCGs prices ! $50 is pocket change compared to say, some of the priciest Magic The Gathering cards like Black Lotus, which goes nowadays for around $2000.
But indeed for a boardgame i feel $50 for one card is a bit ridiculous. Then again, it might become a true collectible and fetch even higher prices in the future....

I must admit that I had never heard of these crazy prices before for MtG cards so did a quick check in ebay and noticed that you can presently buy a Black Lotus card for the not insignificant amount of $125,000 if you feel so inclined:

Hm... now let me think, do I sell the house and all my possessions, push the buy it now button and buy this card...I mean, it does come autographed and with free shipping so can't think what's holding me back?

Wow, wish I kept all my alpha Magic cards. I got out of Magic shortly after beta came out and sold the whole lot for $40! Damn, I'd be rich now!

The Lotus is a supposedly one of the three highest rated condition of the best card in Magic. That said NO ONE is paying 125,000 for it. They are just using that to advertise all the other things they have for sale. That said I wouldn't be surprised if someone were to spend 10,000 on one. I actually own a Black Lotus. In reality I could probably get about $800 for it.
Comparing it to the Ravenloft Kobold is kinda weird. You can just print it and play it at your house. The black lotus is used in virtually every deck it can legally be played in. And in sanctioned tournaments you can't just print it, you have to have a legal card.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, reading further down the listing I noticed the following:
"Early this year we sold a BGS 9.5 Alpha Black Lotus for a world record price of $25,000 USD"
Still a lot of money to pay for a single card IMHO but I can understand the desire to own one and for those with the means to purchase a copy then no doubt a collector's item that as an added bonus can also be actively enjoyed.

I certainly understand the collector's mentality...I was into ME:CCG and paid as much as $30 for the limited one ring (before realizing it was much more economical to buy a box of cards and trade for the rares you need). In retrospect, I consider it a poor decision.
This is why I got into boardgames...supposedly you get everything you need in one box. The thought of spending extra money for a single promo card for a boardgame seems antithetical to this concept.
That being said, I don't really care that there is a promo that I don't have, since I feel like the game (CR) is complete without it. This one in particular doesn't even have the associated miniature. Which is why I'm having trouble understanding why someone would pay more money than the entire game is worth to get a single card for which there is no miniature. And keep in mind, those selling it most likely got it for free.
I guess I'm just having trouble understanding what is driving the decision to pay such a large amount for this particular card. Seems like you could get so much more for your $50+.

I bought one of the two cards recently sold on e-bay.
I wanted the card. I could afford it. I did not know of a cheaper way to get one.

After the next sequel for CASTLE RAVENLOFT comes out, Ravenloft will
probably stop selling, then you can buy the cards for cheaper. (If you have em, sell em now)
I know everybody's dying for a dungeon delving game, but this is not quite it. (I have it, its fun, but still not quite it)

Why would anyone trade their cardboard for PAPER?

"Why would anyone trade their cardboard for PAPER?"
Thx, I was going to make the same joke to point out the absurdity of the argument.
That said imho it's ridiculous to pay 50 bucks for a card, even if I was wealthy I don't think I would pay for that. Mtg cards are a different beast. Wtc is directing the game more and more to idiots with wealthy parents (not saying everyone who plays is an idiot). I played a long time ago but I know people who still play. I loled when I found out they broke their repeated promises to never create pokemon style uber rares that are the only good cards in the game.

Nothing official yet, but I'm currently talking with the WotC people about getting the promos for distribution on BGG. So, unless you're desperate for the promos, hold on to your $50!

That if you kill him with the pill from the till by making with it the drug in the jug, you need not light the candle with the handle on the gâteau from the château.

Old thread, but someone suggested a variant that you scan the promos, mount them onto thin card, and NOT include them in the deck. Instead, whenever one of their "minions" (eg. kobolds for the Kobold Champion) is killed, put a token on the promo card. After three tokens, put the promo card monster into play.
I think this is a *great* idea. The promo monster acts as a "lieutenant" that the players anticipate, rather than just another encounter in the deck.

Did you make any progress with WotC regarding the promos?
