So new to Dwarf Fortress and I'm learning how DFv0.31.25 works with the LNP v9.2. I love the tiles and sound.
There is so much to just learning the game, but I have run into something I haven't been able to find a way around. I have some farm plots that I'm trying to plant Quarry Bushes on:
but my farmers are telling me they "Need rock nuts":
When I checked my stores, I have 5 seeds and tracked down the barrel that has them:
The barrel has lots of other bags of seeds including a huge number of plump helmet spawn.
Neither the barrel nor its contents are forbidden. I have dumped the barrel and reclaimed it to make sure they can access it. I have tried to set up a 1 tile rock nut only stockpile right next to the dump pile so my dwarfs will move it from the dump to the new stockpile, but the multi-seed barrel containing said nut seeds always goes back to the old food stockpile. I have forbidden rock nut seeds in the old food stockpile.
I have managed to plant most of the other seeds I embarked with. For what it is worth, "Rock Nut" doesn't appear in the kitchen permission screen, either.
It looks like despite having a bag full of rock nut seeds, the game doesn't recognize they exist. What am I missing? Any help from some Fortress Veterans?
I'll check back in the a.m. PST.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Is there a way to destroy a barrel and disseminate its contents? Or just remove the contents of the barrel?
Edit:added farmers telling me they need rock nuts...I'll give 'em rock nuts...

Re: "Needs Rock nuts" is driving me nuts!
Hm, I thought I answered to this thread already... Okay, so again:
I have never tried to plant rock nuts but I would try to dump the barrel and then retrieve only its contents. Perhaps there is some strange work order forbidden or something like that. Are they reserverd for the mill?

Thanks for replying.

I don't have a mill, so they couldn't be reserved for that, but is there a way to check and see if an item is reserved for a particular task?

Re: "Needs Rock nuts" is driving me nuts!
It's funny because I'm trying to decide if I'm enjoying myself or not. For example: Q: Why can't I make coke or coal? I have a smelter. A: You need fuel...like wood. Q: Why can't I make pig-iron? I have a smelter and coke (now) and one of the three iron-ores. A: You need flux stone...Check the wiki to find what stones are flux stone. Oh, I thought I had flux stone, but I don't. Then mine all over to find them.
So there's this process of discovery of the mechanics of the world, which can be entertaining and rewarding, but I feel like it's all preliminary to the "real" game which is trying to build an impregnable fortress that will stand for ages against the relentless onslaught of goblins and threats from the deep.
All the while I'm learning, I'm trying to avoid having "fun" ruin my progress. But that may be the wrong attitude.
Regardless, I'm hooked for now. I spend HOURS on this game and it feels like minutes. For me, it's way worse than the "Just 1 more turn..." syndrome.

Thanks for the advice, but the barrel can only be claimed as a whole and I can't seem to forbid/claim separate contents...unless I'm doing something wrong. Which would make me happy since there would be a solution.
As it stands, I changed the crop rotation.
Thanks for the help.

I kinda gave up on DF when my woodcutters wouldn't cut wood, despite having various available axes. Like you, i was intrigued at having built a small and, to-that-time, thriving community, but started to question if i was having "fun"?***
A week of research into laptop specs and i plumped for a excellent value Lenovo that should handle most current games comfortably (first game choice was retro-pick: BG2! The way i see it, i don't have a lot of time to actually spend gaming, so it's essential it's quality time (i.e. ideally not spent on wiki) Do yourself a favour, take the splash.
***i am also resigned to the fact that the game has recently changed it's focus more to rogue-type survival more than civilisation building.

I just played for another few hours...Goblin ambush killed half my military and now dwarfs are throwing tantrums and going insane since they lost friends. And damn thieves are taking a bunch of stuff. This is all good fun.
However, there's also a bunch of junk from the battle in the way of building more of my Great Wall and Drawbridge project...I found out I have to reclaim all that stuff. So I do that and then try to dump everything and sort it out later. Hmmm...It's all reclaimed and they retrieved some stuff, but some stuff is still there. And I have over 10 idle dwarfs with hauling active. This is not fun.

Do you mean move on from a buggy alpha version of a game and spend my precious little gaming time on something more polished or with a better interface? Maybe a different civ game? The thought had crossed my mind...
I desperately want to get into this more since it's uniquely fun with the story developing organically, but I find myself fighting the game more than fighting the goblins. I don't mind reading wikis, but I HATE what seem like 'gotchas' where I have to reclaim stuff after a battle and my donkeys die from starvation despite being in a pasture and the horses carry on just fine. Then I can't butcher them because they're tame. Dead, but tame. Huh?
Having said all that, it is a free game and I admire all the effort and skill put into it. However, my quiet game time is extremely limited and I think I might move on...maybe.

Exactly! The interweb is now coming down with free games aplenty, some of which are VERY polished (I'm playing MMORPG: Eden Eternal at min). I understand that DF has a steep learning curve and requires commitment, but I question why the same controls can't be used consistently to navigate all in-game menus..?
the BIG questions in life...!

Because it is a grown game created by one person who prefers to concentrate on features and doesn't care (yet) about the interface. Although he might be concentrating on the world-gen and adventure stuff right now that will also influent the Dwarf Fortress with the next release. But still I love to play the game and look up killed named creatures in the world history. And knowing that somewhere out there is a dragon with over 2.000 kills who might get interested in the increasing wealth of my fortress is quite unnerving.
