EveryGame has now returned to the App Store.

Unfortunately, to comply with Apple's current interpretation of their App Store guidelines, we had to remove the ability to load on new files.

So that previous owners of EveryGame don't suddenly see their game creation functionality removed, we have released this as a new App called "EveryGame Redux". We didn't want to double charge any existing EveryGame users, so at least for launch, we're making it free.

You can read more about it here:
http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Smq3RC8yf5I&offe...

Future improvements will all be applied to this App until a solution is worked out where a fully functional EveryGame can return to the store. You can have both EveryGame and EveryGame Redux loaded onto your device at the same time.

We're also looking into other solutions that would allow for game development, so that people could submit their own games, which could be pushed out via App Store updates to EveryGame Redux. Currently available options include using the original EveryGame (if you have it). Though untested by us, we're told that using the iPad Simulator or a jail broken device may also work. We're also looking into the potential for doing a OS X port.

We'll let you know if more news on any of those fronts is available.

Welcome back.

Does this mean we have to use iCloud to download other games? Best wishes with shifting and inconsistent requirements.

What a silly thing for Apple to do - I am starting to have a lot of doubts about that company.

I'm glad you're back, although the lack of game loading makes me extremely sad. Best of luck with getting it worked out, and don't forget that an Android port is the best revenge.

I will test out adding games on a jailbroken device on Monday when I am back by my computer.

How long will the new app be free?

To be honest, we haven't decide how long we'll leave it free for. At the very least, it'll be a few weeks -- we want to make sure existing users get plenty of time to download it.

There's some chance we'll leave it free for good, especially if we can't find a good way for normal users to create games. Otherwise, we might put it up, but at a reduced price to match the reduced flexibility.

So at the moment its only a "multi-pack" of non copyrighted games, without AI? doesn't that kind of defeat the entire concept?

Can you program it to pull the XML file from a http host? then you could just drop the XML files on a free dropbox account and be done with apple's idiotic rules.

And just out of curiosity, why would you port it to OSX? OSX has a tiny market share and of that market share a even smaller part is composed of active gamers (less then 5% market share globally compared to windows 7's 15%, and thats just W7, not XP which is the lions share still)

Just port it to android in the meantime (or the steam store for PC/MAC).

Yes, right now, the version in the app store, "EveryGame Redux," can only be used with the included games. It does have it's own unique set of features (Bluetooth, some Euro-inspired titles), but certainly less utility. That's one reason it's free right now. ;0)

Apple's interpretation of what constitutes "executable code" is incredibly broad. I'm hopeful that there will be some way to load games in the future, but I don't have immediate plans for how this will happen. Pulling XML files (or even images) over http (or Dropbox) is almost certainly disallowed if they're used to start a new game.

Porting to the Mac could allow that 5% a method to create games, which could be submitted, and distributed over App Store updates. Why OS X? Primarily, it's because iOS and OS X are essentially the same operating system -- the actual work required for a port is quite small. Android (or any other platform), would be much more work. Plus, since we're all an iPhone, iPad, and Macintosh users, we don't have resources or incentive to port it to other platforms regardless!

All right, it's confirmed. On a jail broken device you can easily add new game modules in the new Redux version. Just save the game files in the Documents folder with the rest of the games.

Hey at least your honest. I can respect that At least us OS agnostic users know not to look for it on android.

What about using the Open In... functionality to open game files in email or on the web? Any chance of that?

That is exactly how the original EveryGame worked, and we were told that it should be removed from the new version.

The issue with loading on new games has to do with the content itself, not its delivery method. It doesn't actually matter whether it uses iTunes, Dropbox, or email.

This is a frustrating stance for Apple to take, because the content being loaded onto the device are simply images. Loading an image into GoodReader is completely permitted, but loading the identical image into EveryGame violates their interpretation of the provision restricting external script code.

They do review submissions on a case-by-case basis, and there's the potential for their App Review team to change their interpretation, so I'm hoping with some time and patience, a new version can be created which satisfies everyone. Well, everyone except the Android users at least. ;0)

What about if the design of the game all took place on the IOS device itself? Perhaps that would meet their guidelines?

So you could pick pictures from the library, or take a picture and make that a game asset. Then you could crop it as well and clone it and give it behaviors like "card/tile" or "board" or "die".

Then allow stacks of things and assign behaviors to stacks like "draw pile" or "discard" or "private hand".

Of course, it would be great if you could then send this as a package to someone else still, but not required if it doesn't meet their guidelines. Huge bummer. They'll eventually have to realize that not allowing this app on the app store just means that it'll get made on Android or something. They have changed their tune on things before. There' still hope.

Maybe it would meet their guidelines because you'd be assigning behaviors instead of "programming".

I certainly think there's the potential that something like that could work. It's hard to say for sure -- they don't talk too much about their guidelines in theoretical senses, to see if something is acceptable, you just have to code it up and submit it!

Really, being able to create the game on-device would be super cool anyway. I'd like to add something like that regardless.

However, there is the matter of actually implementing the interface for game creation. That's not necessarily a small endeavor (to do properly at least), but is certainly something worth considering.

I know. It's something I've wanted to do as well. As a programmer and as someone who has livecode but no apple dev license yet I have been toying with some app design for a while but I am waiting until I have something more ready to deploy before I get the apple license.

Maybe you could make a proof of concept style app and submit that and see if they allow it. It might let you a) assign images to each card in a deck of cards. b) let you move cards around c) provide some automatic behaviors like a deck and discard, d) let you change some rules perhaps such as "draw 4 cards", e) let you flip up or down cards, and f) let you send your gamestate and images to someone else. Of course, on paper it always sounds easier doesn't it?

Also, maybe there's someone else you could contact at apple?

Agreed. I just heard about EveryGame in an old Endeavor forum here. That's the one I wish I could be playing.

Great product, wonderful concept . . . subject to an abusive Overlord.

I hope this works out, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about the future of game development by individuals with this change.

For book or movie app I can drag files into my Ipad Apps section and it will appear as part of the library (Stanza and Goodplayer I am using)

Can you follow a similar model?

I am so sick of this crap, developers won't put funding into developing good games for the iOS system and when someone has good ideas they make them take it down. I bought an iPad a week after they took down Viking Lords form the marketplace because The owner of Battlelore and the C&C system had a hissy fit because someone made a clone of their game and still I sit here a year later waiting for their game to come out on iOS.

I am not familiar how everygame worked in the past but it sounded pretty cool, to be able to make your own games would be awesome but friggen apple won't let that happen, they are afraid of someone making a game that is already copyrighted, what crap, how about you release the old version of everygame again and let people make their own games again but without the capability to upload and share. I just want to make games and be able to play them on my device.

Please port to android, no restrictions.

We've tried to do just that -- putting in versions with all sharing removed, but game creation still enabled. Unfortunately, even those submissions were rejected by Apple.

I suspect that if game creation ran purely on-device and used images only from the iPhoto library, that it would likely get through. However, that's a larger development effort, and seems a bit risky given that it's not even certain it would be accepted.

I don't anticipate an Android port any time soon. Architecturally, the two are different enough that a port would entail almost a complete rewrite.

Sad to hear that Apple is limiting the abilities of such a useful app.

I would like to start adding my own games into EveryGame, but want to make sure I'm not wasting time if the current version can not import any modules.

Is the Redux version essentially the game engine as the regular EveryGame app? So, if there was a way to import games into it, they would run identically in either app?

It looks like the blog is still alive, but the links to EveryGame modules is gone. Is there any other location acting as a repository for modules? I don't see many listed on the Google Groups site, if that is the main location now.

Again, this really sucks that such an innocent program is being affected by such corporate paranoia.

It seems like as Steve Jobs got further into his physical illness he may also have been slipping deeper into his 'mental illness' as well. There seems to have been a lot of paranoia at Apple that limited a lot of functionality in iOS. Specifically the inability of linking or borrowing data from other applications by the developer license. iOS devices would make terrific PDAs but because Apple precludes developers from using data from the Contacts and Calendar apps here is no way to effectively do simple PDA functions like call meeting attendees to announce a reschedule.

Sad.

I'll just leave this here:

iExplorer ( http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/) is a free app (OSX & Windows) that allows you to access the Documents folder for any app. Without jailbreaking.

Yes, I originally found this posted on another forum. This program does work, though there currently are some issues with the EG Redux version (boards "0" do not work, so existing modules have to be edited).
