I equate this game with Diablo II in addictiveness. I find myself playing at least 1 or 2 rounds a night before I go to bed. The PvP challenge and thrill hasn't been this fun since QuakeWorld CTF and Team Fortress days. This game requires coordinated teamwork, strategy, and intelligent play.
When you bait someone into a trap and watch them being ganked is awesome. When you take a bullet for a teammate to keep them alive (Caitlyn's Ult) or when a teammate comes to the rescue and turns the tide.
Aw yeah.
The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat.

Only 1 or 2 rounds a night? That's not much... for crack. Sounds more like marijuana in addictiveness then.
Graves is fun, I like FeralPony as a designer (he also made Rumble).
Anyway, the game can have its amazing moments, but also has a lot of frustration from having dumb teammates. It is probably best played with people you know, makes it a lot better.
I've been playing about 2 matches a day for the past 2 1/2 years... they just celebrated LoL's 2nd birthday yesterday and the new Surprise Party Fiddlesticks skin is hilariously awesome. Just remember if you're new and starting out that there is a mild learning curve, so don't just get too aggravated and quit immediately.
Aldie plays off and on (he's been busy with vacation and Essen recently), but I've played with him a few times, helping him out. If you want any help or have any questions about the game feel free to ask away.

I don't think we have the same definition of 'mild'! LoL has one of the steepest learning curves of any game I've ever played, but it's also one of the best games I've ever played.
Great balance between knowledge-based skill & strategy and twitch reactions. Twitch skills are important, but having mediocre reactions won't necessarily make you a terrible player (as it might for many FPS games).

I came from DotA and HoN into LoL so from there, there is not much of a learning curve. Coming from games that have don't have this kind of gameplay it can take a bit to get used to.

It can be steep, but there are definitely games with a steeper learning curve (X-COM: UFO Defense and Alpha Centauri come to mind).
The twitch skills are kind of important -- but I feel like a combination of smart casting (1 click casting where your cursor is located) with proper builds and strategy can really win you the early game (and snowball into late game) more than simply being fast.
I do wish they had a better tutorial and more things to help people get into the game and a huge overhaul of the AI.... but what can you do.

Yes, very very crack based.
As for learning curve, at least the presentation and mechanics are reasonably friendly, unlike HoN (I do play both).
I have to recomend Riven, she is my favourite mellee champ in the game.

Yes, this is a great game.

It has a lot of things going for it; it's like a sweet combination of various kinds of gameplay:
- Team-based competition on a simple and constant playing field (like most sports)
- Fantasy RPG, letting you kill monsters, collect loot, and level up and develop your spells/abilities from first to max level, all in a single round.
- RTS, where you get to focus on one unit and feel clever when you perform some sweet mirco. The rest of your army is AI controlled, which makes the game less stressful than other RTS games where you have to manage large armies.
- Tower Defense
I dig it, but it does have a steep learning curve to figure out how to play well.

I've been playing for almost 2 months now. Currently level 21. I didn't find the learning curve bad at all. Played against the AI till about lvl 5 then have done PvP since then.
But then again I'm the type of person to read up on strategy sites/forums, watch videos and live streams and peruse Mobafire. So I walk into things a little more prepared I guess.
Got a good # of champs due to all the IP I've gotten (that and a few friends off my referral link have provided some nice IP boosts as well. Shameless plug: http://signup.leagueoflegends.com/?ref=4e4dda64d277201499140...)
I've added a few VGG/BGG folks to my friends list but most are at level 30 or so so probably not worthy of playing with me.
But hey, if you ever play with me you'll find a team player

There are tons of terrible level 30's, myself included, don't suffer from level envy.

yeah, do have to say, levels don't make a difference.
Well, if you want to argue I think someone worked out a great rune page + masteries is about 600-900 gold or something, if I recall correctly.
Honestly, runes I hate so hard as a system but other than that levels aren't really anything important.

Ya, runes can be an annoying IP sink if you're trying to get a lot of Champions too. I just bought the bundles back in the day (gives 40 Champions) and have bought the rest (minus two or three that were on sale) with IP. I'm also almost done buying the best runes and have every Champion except Wukong unlocked (didn't find him interested and he is pretty weak all things considered).
If you're interested in the best runes set up for Champions on average it would be 1 set for mana casters and 1 for physical damage dealers. You can mix these for casters without mana.
Mana Caster: Magic Penetration marks, Mana Regen per level Seals, AP per level Glyps, Flat AP Quints.
Physical: Armor Penetration Marks, Flat Armor Seals, Flat Magic Resist Glyphs, Movement Speed or Flat AD Quints (depending if they are melee or ranged).
And if you really only want a single rune page for every Champion, I'd suggest: Flat Attack Damage Marks (makes last hitting with auto attacks easier), Flat Armor Seals, Flat Magic Resist Glyphs, Movement Speed Quints.

Yeah, I know how runes work, I still think they're a somewhat redundant system that could as much be seen as a financial gain as opposed to gameplay game (as in, if you want good runes you can't get champs for free for a while, which tempts into buying).
And Wukong is awesome, he shreds towers with his Q.

Eh, I am confident that it would take me less than ~150 hours to feel like I understand X-COM's insides and subtleties =)
I was past level 20 when I could usually understand why I died, had a halfway decent concept of how to position correctly, etc. There's a ton of different champions (and of course many more now than there were then!) to learn about, lots of intricacies in the mechanics (last hitting, jungling, positioning), etc. - simply a LOT of information to take in.
Worth it if you have the time mind you - it's a fantastic game. But I consider it to have a steeper learning curve than anything else I've played; modern-day Total Annihilation is the only thing I can think of that'd be close.

When was the last time you played X-COM? That game can get pretty, pretty brutal.
LoL isn't that bad, but then again I grew up with AoS (Aeon of Strife) games.
If you're having trouble getting used to the game, I'd suggest watching some tournament games or top tier replays and try to mimic what they do. Lane control and last hitting is very important. Besides that it just takes time to understand what Champions do what... when to run away and when to engage.

I first played X-Com ~1.5 years ago. Don't get me wrong, X-Com is complicated and hard to get into, but I feel there just isn't nearly as much "stuff" to learn about the game. There are subtleties like how to build your base for defense, etc. And it'd take many hours to really learn the game well, but I don't feel it really compares with LoL in that regard.
As far as LoL goes, I am quite competent now and know most of the things one can readily know. I mean, I've put about 900 hours into this game now between playing, researching, theorycrafting, watching streams, etc. - not quite as much as you, but I have a lot of experience ;)

So what champions does everyone prefer? Any hated ones?
I really like Annie. Just something about her bear Tibbers summoning in and destroying things, and her area effect fire spell. She was the first summoner I feel like I really understood how to play well.
Lately I've been playing a lot of Warwick.
I have an undying hatred of Miss Fortune. She is the definition of broken. Also not a big fan of Cho'Gath.

Miss Fortune? Broken? As in overpowered? As in better than she should be?
I play practically every Champion, although I prefer tricky characters (especially casters) like Brand and Kog'Maw. I have every Champion unlocked except Wukong, and have played every Champion 5+ times. There are quite a few I'm not very fond of, but I still play them from time to time just to get a feel for them and how others will act when they play them.

LoL is really popular, but I'm not sure how easy it'd be to even get 10 people together for a skirmish, much less the 20+ for a tournament. Although I suppose we could roll a different format like a 1v1 tournament or somesuch, that might work.
MScrivner wrote: So what champions does everyone prefer? Any hated ones?

Hah. You probably just played against a really good one - she's slightly on the weak side of anything right now. LoL is very well balanced, so there's actually no champion that is brokenly good at the moment.
That doesn't mean I don't have problems with some champs - Fiddlesticks is my bane more than any other champ. The combination of fear, silence, and drain is terribly frustrating for me.
I'm best with Caitlyn, Amumu, and Rumble. I am weakest with mid-lane mages (e.g. Annie, Malz, Brand, etc.) - not a single one of those champs jives with me well for some reason.

I've been playing Caitlyn lately and usually play mostly against the bots.
I just had a great intermediate game. 22 kills vs 23 for enemy TEAM, also knocked out 7 of the 9 turrets.
I've had a number of bad games lately, so it was great finally dominating one.
