It was like X-com and not the crappy FPS that they have coming down the pipe, but it was more like an independently made X-Com style game. Dang if I can't recall the name!

There's also the UFO series with UFO: Aftermath, UFO: Aftershock, and UFO: Afterlight, but I believe those are all real time.
UFO: Alien Invasion is the closest to X-com that I've seen.

Laser Squad Nemesis was the 'sequel' to X-Com, but wasn't part of the license. The guy who designed X-Com made LSN.
