I realize that most people have most likely moved onto Skyrim. But, I jumped on actually getting a game finally and was only able to afford Oblivion, so I picked it up.
First of all, I'd like to know if there are still people that play Oblivion regularly or at least enough to still know enough about the game. Because if there are some, I'd very much enjoy talking about the game regarding quests, items, etc.
In the main story of Oblivion, I'm at the point where I had just talked to the Argonian mage in the Arcane University and I have to wait 24 hours for her to tell me something about the Daedric Cult, Mythic Dawn. I know where the cult's secret shrine is but I have to wait.
I accidentally killed the 'beggar' that I have to talk to in the quest "May the Best Thief Win." Is there any way for me to continue that quest and join the Thieve's Guild?
I'm also the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, an Apprentice of the Mage's Guild, an Associate of the Fighter's Guild, a Knight of the Blades and a Brawler in the Arena. I can help anyone for any quests regarding these factions up to the point I've reached.
I also keep running into Oblivion Gates around Tamriel, but I've only managed to close the Kvatch Gate. I can't seem to close any other and am seeking any advice possible from anyone that still plays.
Oh! another point that I should mention is that I'm playing a Khajiit with a custom class.

Oblivion is a great game but I'm afraid you're probably on your own for a while until folks are tired of Skyrim.
Have you done the Daedric quest to get the skeleton key? The best item in the game in my opinion.

My wife and I just finished playing Oblivion before moving on to Skyrim. There are two great Wikis available online that will answer all of those questions and more.
The gates can be tough to close because the towers that contain the sigil stones are often hard to access. In many cases, you'll need to find a cave entrance that will eventually lead you to the entrance to the main tower, or go into secondary towers to open wargates that will allow access to the main tower.
That thief quest is timed, and I would recommend reloading from an earlier save or finding another beggar. In general, killing NPCs in Oblivion can have quest related consequences, so you need to try to be careful about it.
Best of luck!

Just finished Oblivion in December like Adam mentioned. I had two different characters. My redguard custom class finished the Fighter, Mage, Knights of the Nine (DLC), and the main storyline. My more "evil" Khajiit character finished the Thief, Assassin, and Shivering Isles (DLC) storyline.
For "May the Best Thief Win", as Adam mentioned I believe you can talk to any beggar not just the one on the waterfront that you likely killed. But I don't believe you have to even talk to a beggar.
Spoiler (mouseover to reveal): One of the NPCs you are competing against dashes right away to the house you need to get into. The real key to the quest is getting to the item before she does.
The skeleton key, unbreakable lockpick is an incredibly handy item.
Spoiler (mouseover to reveal): Nocturnal who initiates the quest is northeast of Leyawiin.
Another incredibly useful item is Azura's star which is a refillable soul gem. These are important to recharging magical items.
The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Wiki has a wealth of information and loads much faster than some of the other wikis out there.
Do you have the Knights of the Nine DLC? If so, if you want to utilize the equipment you gain and complete all the different guild quests you have to be concerned about timing. Effectively do all of the thief and assassin quest lines first and then keep your nose clean once you start Knights of the Nine.
I hope you are having a great time. It is a fantastic game!

Oblivion GotY edition only being $5 on Steam a little bit ago, I'm still playing it. I have a butt-ton of mods installed that raise it to awesomeness. Will wait for Skyrim to drastically drop in price before getting it.
I don't play it as much as I did a couple months ago, but I still mean to get around to finishing the thieve's guild questline and exploring the Shivering Isles.

I don't have any DLC, unfortunately. But the reason why I think I screwed up is that I killed the Waterfront beggar that was near the guard tower there and the quest keeps pointing to the spot he died. I have the a Fighting Second Chance quest for May the Best Thief Win now, which can be relatively easier, but also slightly more difficult.
I've visited the wikis for Oblivion, but when I need specific quest information, it tends to be avoiding it.
Is the Skeleton Key quest level related? I just got to level 10 last night, while I got my second gate closed.
Also, I think something is wrong with my game. In the main quest, Teer-ma (I think that's the Argonian Mage's name) disappeared. I know where the Mythic Dawn shrine is, but I don't know if I can go there until I talk to her again.
And my reasoning for not having Skyrim is the same as your's Aaron. But, I still plan to get Skyrim when I have the chance.

Hey, another Khajiit player, cool.

I've just recently started playing this (still at level 2 I think), but it's great. I keep wandering around, admiring the landscape, doing a dungeon here and there, because it's still a beautiful game IMO. No need to rush that.
Skyrim looks great as well, but I won't ever play it.
Because of Steam.

It is, but the required level is 10, so you're in luck!
Closing Oblivion gates is pretty much the same method for all of them, just the caves/path is different.

Which main storyline quest does the game say you are on? If you have officially discovered the location of the shrine you should just be able to go there and keep the quest going.
It sounds like our approach to the game was much different. I decided to put off the main storyline for a while to complete a lot of side missions. In fact, I refused to take Martin and Jauffre to Cloud Ruler Temple and used them as followers for quite a while on one play through. (They are both essential at the point so they didn't die.)
Regarding Khajiits, I loved that their racial ability is no-mana cost nighteye. With that character I tended to do a lot of underground or cave dungeon crawls while sneaking around. In the dark it is much easier to get sneak attacks with a bow. Otherwise I found having to deal with darkness annoying.
Btw, getting access to the Mage Academy in the Imperial City can be a pain but that allows you to be able to create your own spells and enchant your own items. The spell creation is especially useful. I would suggest creating the highest degree feather spell you can. (I have to give my hubbie credit for discovering that first.)

My issue is that I know where it is, but I'm supposed to wait for Terr-ma to tell me, but she seemed to have vanished from Cyrodil. I had waited at least week now and she still hasn't come back. I looked up the quest and she has to tell me where to go, which really stinks since I had to wait 24 hours but she didn't return. And I'm a Mage Guild Apprentice, so I have access to the Arcane University. But, if you don't mind gaining a lot of Infamy, I'd suggest doing the Dark Brotherhood quests. Reason being is that at the end, when you become Listener, you can go talk to the Night Mother then go to Arquen and get 200 Gold once a week, plus you can take a Dark Brotherhood Murderer as a follower.
The Nighteye was the exact reason why I chose the Khajiit.

I started this game once, long ago, and it got lost in the mists. I'm re-doing it now! When I'm done, I'll get Skyrim, but by then it'll probably be cheaper. (I enjoy these types of games, but they're not my favorite, and I don't have a problem waiting for the inevitable GOTY awesome-pack of Skyrim, just like I got for Oblivion)

Oh, okay. You are trying to find Tar-Meena at the Arcane University? She tends to hang out in the central tower outside the Arcane University during the quest. But if you can't find her then I believe you can continue without her...
Spoiler (mouseover to reveal): Go to Green Emperor Way in the Imperial City and look for the tomb of Tomb of Prince Camarril. If you are there at around noon the carving on the tomb will light up red and when you "activate" it the location to the Mythic Dawn shrine will be updated on your map. If memory serves, one good way to know you have the right place is that the option to "activate" the tomb will still be there at other times beside noon but it won't do anything if you try to activate. This should update the quest and you can continue without talking to Tar-Meena.
I found the Dark Brotherhood quests to be a lot of fun too and a nice change from the pace of a lot of the other side quests in the game.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna go do that when I get the chance to do so.
The Dark Brotherhood quests actually required the most thinking required to complete them. This is because you have to figure out the best way to kill someone, sneak in and out, etc.

Alright, I found Nocturnal's shrine and received the Skeleton key. I'm also now Conjurer for the Mage's Guild. And for the alternate "May the Best Thief Win," you guys were right, I just needed to talk to any beggar.
If anyone else here needs some help, I can offer what I know.

I've just finished pretty much everything but the Main Quest in my current playthrough (I finished the Main Quest in my original run five years ago) and am now starting Shivering Isles.
I too am open for business if anyone seeks advice.

I only stopped playing about a month or so ago, after I finished the last of the Xbox360 achievements. I'll be happy to help anyone who asks.
Octavian, doing Shivering Isles before finishing the main quest is a great idea, there's an item you'll have by the end of SI that will make the final part of the game a great deal easier. Having done so will also make a certain scene in Skyrim a lot more fun.

Re: Re: Anyone still playing?
I finished the Shivering Isles main quest yesterday morning and last night I finished the Main Quest for the normal story. I had completed the Knights of the Nine Quest last week. I can offer any assistance to anyone now, but I don't think a whole lot of people play this game since Skyrim, I've unlocked all but the Fighter Guild Achievements and the Duke of Dementia achievement. I also have taken care of all the hideout-related quests like Battlehorn Castle, Frostcrag Spire, the Thieve's Den and Deep Scorn Hollow. I've even explored the dungeon that leads to Mehrune's Razor.
But, until I get Skyrim, I'll be continuing to play and raiding dungeons and doing some side quests.
