I have absolutely no experience with any version of GH. I just bought GH Metallica (game only!) assuming that I could play the game using just the normal controllers modest

It turned out, that I couldn't even get the game properly started without connecting a microphone. The game hans't complained about no guitar controllers connected (yet?). The manual or the back of the game cover doesn't say anything about what hardware i need to get to play the game. devil

Could someone please enlighten me as to what hardware is strictly necessary to play the game (with one and two players)?

Thanks.

Guitar Hero or Band Hero or Rock Band guitars (guitar and bass. Same hwardware instruments)
Guitar Hero or Band Hero drums (those from Rock Band differ)
Guitar Hero or Band Hero or Lips microphone.

What you buy from those depends on your prefered instruments. I prefer the guitars myself.

So I basically need one instrument per player? Ie. you can't play with just the controller/nunchuck, right?

Any mix of instruments will work? (maximum 1 drum set I suppose)

How about michrophone? Is that really absolutely necessary?

Wait, you are talkin about the Wii? Well I don't think that you can use anything but the instruments but I have never played it on the Wii.

Most modern Guitar/Band Hero games support up to four instruments of any kind. So you could play with four guitars (which is not possible in the Rock Band series).

Every player needs one instrument. Which is of his choice (in at least every GH from GH 5 on).

Yes, it is the Wii version. Of course I should have stated that in the OP.

From the pictures I have seen, it seems like the standard Wii controller is inserted in the instrument and connected to the buttons in it with a cable that presumably is plaugged into the nunchuck port of the controller.

Thanks again.

You can play with the Wii-mote, but it is very difficult. Must easier with the guitar accessory. At least you could play the original GH with just the Wii-mote. You are right, there are no instructions in the GH:Metallica book.
I don't know why you are having issue by needing a microphone. I don't have a microphone and can play just fine, but I do have the guitars.

If the Wii version is like the PS3, you have to have at least one instrument connected to start the game.

Since the microphone uses the standard controller to navigate screens, the game looks for it if it detects a controller but no guitar or drums.

Edit: My comments are for Rock Band, I am assuming Guitar Hero worked the same way, so I could be very wrong.

Only played it on the PS 2 but for one player you only need 1 guitar, no need of microphone or anything else. I have two guitars because me and my wife both play.

Thanks all.

Looks like I'll just have to get a couple of guitars and see what happens about the microphone error after that. I'm not overly keen on the singing part... whistle
