This game looks awesome, but sadly there are no threads for this game. I'm thinking about getting this game, though I want to know your opinions on whether I should play through the other 3 games first? I could purchase the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and get them all in one package, but is it worth it?
Could someone perhaps post a review for this game and/or any of the other games in this series?
Thanks!

My understanding is that the HD collection only contains (the remade versions of) MGS2 and 3 (I think the version of 3 that comes with this has playable conversions of the MSX MG1 and 2) along with Peace Walker so you'd be missing MGS1.
I've only played MG1, MG2, MGS1, and MGS2 so I'm really the wrong person to respond but this post looked lonely. Playing the games out of order will definitely have some effects concerning plot spoilers, but I'm not so sure that they'll significantly affect the playing experience.
There would almost have to be users with better formed opinions about the relative strengths of the Solid games.

I played MGS1 ages ago and to be honest I didn't really follow the plot that well. I'm in the same boat as you otherwise. I just got MGS4 and will probably play it without trying the others first.

I thought Peace Walker was the first game. Interesting that the collection wouldn't include the first game of the series.

It's not. Most of the metal gear games have been remade in one form or another changing the subtitle and giving the new version a graphical overhaul. I couldn't say for sure, but I'd suspect that it's excluded for incompatibility issues ... MGS was remade as MGS: The Twin Snakes for the GameCube. Meanwhile all the later games were released for PS2/3/PSP.

So Twin Snakes is the first game? I suppose I could still get that and play it on my Wii. Now I still have the question of if I should...

Yeah, my understanding is that MGS1 wasn't included because there's no meaningful way to do a "quick" HD remake of a PS1 game (you'd have to start over), and my impression is that MGS fans really don't care for the Twin Snakes remake.

I haven't played it myself, though I can say that there are some definite pluses and minuses.

Yes. The story and all the references are just nonsense without the first 3 games. I absolutely recommend playing them in order.

You definitely want to start with some other game in the series. I haven't played all that much of 4, but what I've played of it ... would make even less sense if I hadn't played the earlier games first. I suppose in a pinch you could go find a let's play or something to get caught up.

So what you're saying is that if I want to get into this series, I should buy the original (which I'd have to play on Cube), then buy the HD collection to play 2 and 3, and THEN play MGS4? I think I could do that.

You don't have to play the original on the Gamecube. If you have a PS3 (and I assume you do if you're looking to play 4), you can download MGS1 on PS1 Classics on the Playstation Store.
For my money, I'd say MGS1 is the best game in the series (best game on the PS1 period), MGS2 is so bad and convoluted it's the one that most people 'quit' the series on, and MGS3 is a return to form.

I didn't realize it was available on the store. That looks cheaper too.
