I've been coming to bgg/rpggeek/videogamegeek for several months now and it's become a great place to keep track of my games, submit reviews and chat about my favorite hobby - gaming. Some interface issues aside, I'd say this website and community is wonderful, almost perfect. Almost you say? Well, I've got one pet peeve....
And because it sums it up better than I could in any other way, I'll post a conversation I had with

me: hmm.. I wonder who at vgg I need to complain to, about their non-inclusion of visual novels Julia: dunno, but it is intentional me: I know it's intentional, which is why I want to complain Julia: i tried to submit 'i'm sorry babe" and i got a mail back they decided to not include visual novels and they removed the category just start a thread on general me: I mean "play your own adventure" books are games right? And they have pretty much the same playability And Ever17 made the RPGfan's top 20 list of rpg's (now I dont think that's entirely correct as it's definitely not an rpg, but it does show there's a gamer-interest in them) Julia: not all of them have divering paths tho some have just one path me: I dont know any visual novels with only 1 ending. But then again I havent really looked me: I must admit there's not a whole lot of gameplay in ever17. You're mostly reading. But then it does have 11 different endings. So it atleast has some interactive elements to set it apart from a normal book Julia: Dinner date has a set ending me: Interactive fiction games tend to only have 1 ending too tho and they're games Ok, I dont know dinner date Julia: but that has puzzles me: not all of them... or barely. I agree that it's tricky. But personally I'd say that if it has any interactive elements (that can influence the game even if really slightly) it counts as a game Julia: I don't disagree that they may not belong there, but i'm annoyed i don't have a place to catalogue what visual novels I have played me: Maybe they need to add "Visualnovelgeek" It's annoying, because bgg/videogamegeek/rpggeek have a database/collection of pretty much all the games I enjoy, EXCEPT those games. so I feel your pain And there are some really good ones out there that deserve more attention but cant get it because they dont "fit into a box". me: But as long as they can be tagged separatly as being visual novels, I dont see a reason for not including them in their database. Except if they want to avoid people adding a ton of 18+ eroge games. Julia: that didn't seem to be the problem me: then I dont see why they would exclude these games. The difference between visual novels and books is that in visual novels YOU are the main character. That makes it a game/immersive experience for me, even if there are not too many choices to make. I guess I'll make a thread to rant about this at some point Julia: it's a "x is not a game" discussion me: yeah, unfortunately I actually dont care much about that discussion, as long as they put them back in the database Julia: hehe me: maybe I'll just copy paste our discussion and make it a thread Julia: that's fine with me me: ok, that saves me from writing up all these arguments over again Julia: hehe -----------------------------------
Visual novels: Whether they fit in your definition of game or not, they're more closely related to videogames than to anything else. And they need a loving home. I hope videogamegeek is willing to give them a place again.

Wikipedia classes visual novels within video games, especially the Japanese-only ones that were for consoles.

Wait, visual novels aren't included? Why the hell not? I don't even like the genre, but that's silly.
I mean, look at what we've got in the database: The Path Wii Fit Night Trap Color a Dinosaur
Color A Motherfucking Dinosaur? I rest my case.

If Mario Paint and 999 are in here, I don't see why visual novels wouldn't be.
