I see the geekmod overflowing with 'character pictures' of planes 'starring' in videogames.
Luckily I do know many of those planes, so when someone claims it's a F-4, I don't have to google the thing first...
Currently: GeekMod | Images 144 | Videos 78 | Image Links 413 | Article 1 | Data 2 | History
Now, maybe I'm a bit slower, not being a native speaker. But I have trouble deciding how to use the character guidelines for planes: The following are the limits on the number of screenshots for this gallery
1 (ONE) screenshot of the character in play for each versions it has; 1 (ONE) screenshot of the in game character portrait, if different, for each versions it has; 1 (ONE) screenshot of the CGI rendition of the character for each versions it has;
I already declined a title screen featuring a jet, on the basis that 1) it's already in the dB. As representative picture for the game. And 2) because it's NOT "the character in play"
But I have no idea what a 'portrait' of a plane looks like. Currently I'm staring at a cockpit view screenshot (no less) of the 'Bell UH-1 Huey' helicopter-character.
Lastly I have no idea what a "CGI rendition of the character" is.
Is there an admin who can shed some light on how I'm supposed to wrestle my way through these gazillion plane shots?

Screenshot of the character in play = this is the most self-explanatory - a gameplay screenshot (for aircraft, a screenshot showing it being flown by the player or a picture of the instrument panel during gameplay, the latter being necessary for simulations lacking an external perspective.)
Game character portrait = given the first category, I have taken this refer to a non-gameplay screenshot (so a depiction of the character taken from other portions of the game - title screen, menu, instructions, data screens, etc.)
CGI rendition of the character = I have not submitted anything purporting to fall under this category, but I am thinking it may refer to something like an animated opening or cut scene. Anyone else have an idea on this one?
Quote: I already declined a title screen featuring a jet, on the basis that 1) it's already in the dB. As representative picture for the game. And 2) because it's NOT "the character in play" I think this is ok, not as a gameplay screenshot, but as a character portrait, such as this example:
I have tried to include comments for the Mods (especially for the more crowded galleries) indicating the category for which each image is being submitted (gameplay or portrait) and noting the absence of other images for the particular character version.
Unfortunately this is one of those technical areas that Geekmod is not really equipped to deal with (i.e. that's what kind of aircraft?) Same as I feel looking at some images proposed for newer games which leave me thinking "I haven't got a clue!"
So absent an occasional mis-click on my part, you should not have to be concerned about reviewing the images for accuracy in regards to aircraft ID. You should be safe concentrating instead on whether or not the submissions live up to the Geekmod guidelines.

You are right on the 3 accounts. For the last category think of Final Fantasy X for example, a screenshot of the opening cutscene for Tidus would fall on the third category. We need to clarify though I think, because that is valid only one such cutscence is different than the normal game engine.

I couldnt agree more on this and declined a TON of those pictures. In my opinion someone is clearly trying to get extra GG for repeat content. In some cases, like the FA-18 Hornet, there are 8 screenshots already of the plane in game. All are old, pixelated, nothing recent at all.
I vote deline, it gets approved. Now we have 9 pixelated 16 color images of the F-18 hornet.
Then I looked and there seems to be no end to amount of these "character" screenshots. Are we really going to encourage this by giving 100+ for a screen capture of the the same plane that has no additional quality?
Okay rant over, now back to clicking on decline some more!

Actually, someone is trying to populate a useful resource that you won't find anywhere else online, consistent with the VGG image policy set forth above...
What is really confusing is why you would decline images that the VGG policy explicitly allows. To play the Geekmod game, you need to read the rules! (Of course, usually this works the other way around, with images that are oversize, undersize, and from other sites sailing right through...)
One area of possible confusion revolves around a recent change to the VGG character system. Character versions are now divided up by game - expressed as "one game equals one character version." As stated in the VGG image policy excerpt posted above, each character version gets one gameplay image, one non-gameplay image, and one "CGI" (animated cut scene?) image. So that means three images for each character for every game.
Naturally this will involve some repetition in appearance, but I can assure you that every Sopwith Camel, F-16, and F-18 from a classic flight sim looks different to a flight sim enthusiast. Again, this is creating a visual resource that you will not find on any other site that I have come across.
And yes, it does carry a Geekgold award, and that's nice, but the image award hardly makes up for the time that it takes to do this (particularly given the buckets of GG that get handed out in the lotteries). There are much more efficient Geekgold sinks to mine if you are just looking to make a bunch of GG in a hurry...
If you disagree with the way that the character system has been set up, you should cast your vote on the issue in the VGG Suggestions forum. By instead attempting to cast your vote in Geekmod against images allowed under VGG policy, you are only losing out on the GG award you should receive for your modding efforts...

I think you are right, I think the rules must have changed to allow this type of overlapping submission. 3 images, every game, every instance, every version, then hundreds of image links after those images are approved.
I think I am just frustrated that others can't get their items approved because of how massive the backlog continues to be on these submissions. BGG might have 125 pending items at one time, on a site tat is how much bigger than this one? On VGG we currently have 708 items that need moderation.
It just looks bad when users submit content and have to wait a week for it to get approved when on the other side its approved in 24 hours usually. Hard to maintain excitement when that happens.

I have also commented on the linking process in the VGG Suggestions forum. Unfortunately, this is the setup we have now and, with resources focused on the site redesign, I expect that this is the character system we will have for the foreseeable future... all we can do is make the best of it (and keep those requests for improvements flowing in hopes that they will be answered, some day.)

I hear you on that one - I've been on the other end of that equation too, on all three domains. When I have had content get stuck in Geekmod (say, behind dozens of web browser game screenshots), I try to dive in to help clear things out. I'd be happy to pitch in on this occasion, but unfortunately I don't have that option this time around...
In the end, these situations are best approached with a mix of patience, prodding, and pitching in - all a part of the adventure of working on the newest Geekdo domain!

There is an improvement on it for the redesign. Atr some item galleries, images of linked items will show there by default without the need to create a link. More specific, you won't have to link an image of a character to the game it appears, as it will appear there automatically.
