I played it only once on the computer of a family friend.

It was a space/science fiction game. You controlled a space ship of a race you could choose. Each race's ships had a different type of weapon, I remember at least one of them caused your ships inhabitants to fly out into space.

There were objects within the play area like planets etc that exerted gravitational forces on the ships.

As you got further apart the view zoomed out to display more area, and zoomed in on the action as you got closer together.

Anyone?

It does sound like Star Control, or one of its sequels, to me.

Yes it is definitely one of the Star Control series - the ship you are thinking of which could steal the other ship's crew was the Syreen Penetrator.

The source code and assets for Star Control II were released into the public domain by the original developers, and it has been rewritten to run on various modern systems. This new development is available at The Ur-Quan Masters.

It's still a terrific game to play.
