I have both systems and loved Oblivion. How do I decide which system to buy Skyrim for? Have Oblivion for the 360 (didn't have a PS3 then).
thanks for any opinions

I highly suggest you avoid the PS3 version. It is riddled with bugs, glitches, frame rate issues, and freezing. It has to do with the game engine not being adapted to the PlayStation console resulting in it struggling to obtain all the needed information quickly. The 360 version of course has problems but will be the better gaming experience.

Last I heard they have simply not found a way to avoid the game slowing down on the PS3 when your save file gets large. So if you plan to do a playthrough of a greater part of the game's content, then I strongly suggest favouring the Xbox 360 version if you can.

I've not had anything game breaking happen on my 360(lv38), but my friend has quit playing his PS3 version until they patch it. He's not happy about it.

I haven't experienced any game breaking lag on the PS3. I'm in Level 32 and the save game file is 8.5 MB.

I'm level 40 on the PS3 and haven't had any f those issues either. The load times I've had are not dissimilar to what I've read about across systems. But the first responders say avoid PS3 so...

For reference, most reported problems with the PS3 version don't tend reach seriously problematic for most users until they start to approach the 100 hour mark or thereabouts. Many PS3 users have played the game to their satisfaction without encountering the issues, but if you do aim for some degree of completionism, then it's virtually guaranteed you will hit the problem before you are done. At least that was the case prior to the 1.4 patch.

Happy to report zero problems with the PS3, so it really comes down to which console your prefer.

There are more reported problems on the PS3. They have patched it to make it better but the memory issue on large save files does exist it isn't made up. The Xbox version also has slightly better frame rate and graphics.

There are videos online showing the frame rate problems on the PS3. They're pretty bad. I'd get the Xbox360 version.

The problem is no one ever reports which PS3 they have problems on. There are many models with differing physical components. I have one of the last 80GB with built in PS2 compatibility. I'm at 160+ hours, 13+ MB save file, level 54. Barely any lag problems whatsoever.
With the game, that is. My mornings are a different story.

Thats a good point. Is it going to matter that I just have a newer 160gb PS3?

However if it is the case, Bethesda has not been forthcoming in giving any guidance as to what PS3s may or may not be affected. Also, it may come down to play style rather than hardware iteration. Different styles of play can force the game to stream more or less data from a savegame depending on the ways you have interacted with the world in the past.

Came across this this morning:
Skyrim 1.4 patch for PS3 / PC
I'll be watching to see if this resolves the issue. I've been making lists lately of the value I could expect from either HD console (based on my specific interests, of course), and to my surprise there were only eight games firmly in the 360 camp. The big multiplatform releases with a clear 360 performance bias are RDR, ACII, Fallout 3, HL2 (Orange Box), and Skyrim.
Since my PS3 want-list is already quite a bit larger, I'd love to see this resolved.

RDR AC (any, and I own all of them for PS3) Fallout 3 Skyrim (No, I have never had any slow-down and my game save is well over 6 MB)
Am I missing something? Also, most of those games were played on my 120GB Slim.

Is the hd texture update dlc also available for any of the consoles?

Well, that's good to hear. What I've done is searched for detailed comparisons from at least 3-4 sources for each game. In the case of ACII and RDR, for instance, the consistent conclusion is that the PS3 versions will not disappoint, but that the 360 has a clear edge in performance. Contrast with other games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution or GTAIV, where comparisons essentially call it a draw.
Fallout 3 I may be mis-remembering or simply mixing up with New Vegas, although NV sounded like such a buggy mess on all platforms that I'm not really interested in purchasing it unless the Ultimate edition performs markedly better. You're right, though; it appears as if I can slide Fallout 3 over to my PS3 camp.
The Skyrim lag/slowdown might not affect all PS3 models, but I wouldn't take a chance on it unless the PS3 patch was a known fix.
The AC series is relatively low interest for me, but the second one seems by far the most loved of the series, so I'd like to try that at some point. RDR is much higher priority, so I was sad to read multiple comparisons that leaned toward the 360.

Harlekin wrote: Is the hd texture update dlc also available for any of the consoles? I doubt it would even be possible. The minimum GPU specs (GeForce GTX 260 / Radeon HD4890) on the PC are way above the level of the console hardware. As far as I can tell, neither console would be able to output the textures at anything approaching an acceptable frame rate. It's not a huge loss though. The HD textures are nice, but not so great that the console versions are suddenly vastly inferior because of the difference.

I'm chiming in a bit late, but if you care about the material things that come with the game, the 360 version has a bit of an advantage in that the printed world map is over twice as large and made of a parchment-like paper, whereas the PS3 version is printed on glossy paper.
See http://www.lensoftruth.com/skyrim-a-comparison-of-maps-ps3-x...
As for if you'll actually use the map, that's a different story. I personally didn't find any usefulness to it, but it could make for a pretty neat poster I guess.

I personally didn't find any usefulness to it, but it could make for a pretty neat poster I guess. Reading through the comments, it appears that both versions originally included a Premium Physical Map (and games with this are labeled in the upper left on the back), and then later print runs of both versions included the smaller/glossy maps.
(Note: I have the PS3 version with the Premium Physical Map, so I can verify that the article is misleading, at best. However, I can also verify that, as cool as it was when I opened the case, I haven't found any reason to use or look at it since then.).

Something else i saw is that the PS3 version goes up to 1080i, while the XBOX goes to 1080p. not sure i'd notice the difference, just saying.
